Chapter Thirty-One: Splitting the Family
In the midst of a chaotic battle, George dragged the bloodied and dusty Eve Frostleaf out from a pile of corpses. The dirt of life and death on the battlefield had tainted the usually clean and unblemished Eve Frostleaf. The silver strands beneath her skirt armor were stained black, and the blood on her graying silver hair was a startling red.
When she was first pulled out, Eve Frostleaf showed little reaction. George held off a succubus attempting to sneak attack, charging his hands with radiant light, and pressed down hard on Eve Frostleaf’s chest, at which point she slowly opened her eyes.
During that brief moment, George took a hit to his back; he nearly tore the attacker apart with his holy sword. He said to Eve Frostleaf:
“Can you hear me?”
Eve Frostleaf nodded like a newborn baby. George lifted her with one hand and said:
“I’ll get you out of here.”
All around them was a scene of blood and light, as various hideous demons fought among themselves. The air was thick with the seductive miasma emitted by the succubi, which, when inhaled by ordinary people, could induce various unrealistic fantasies, or even plunge them into a dreamy stupor.
But Eve Frostleaf said:
“No, please go to the distant Osuan and tell the champion knight and the queen. Tell them I died fighting the demon army. Tell them I have married a human worth entrusting my life to, and I am very happy. Then, burn my corpse and scatter my ashes on foreign soil. All my belongings belong to you, but George, do not take any of my belongings back to Osuan.”
“Stop talking nonsense!” George said. “You will live.”
As he spoke, he delivered a powerful punch that twisted the head of a succubus that came in for an attack.
“No,” Eve Frostleaf’s body leaned at an angle, relying entirely on George to keep her from collapsing. “I can’t hold on.”
“Don’t use your life to take revenge on your parents.”
