Chapter 44: Unspoken Rules of Warfare
The person who appeared behind me was Yuhui Bai.
She wasn’t wearing glasses, and her short ponytail was let down, turning into a shoulder-length bob. Her temperament hadn’t changed, but perhaps due to the significant change in appearance, her demeanor shifted from calm to serene, adding a touch of mystery.
Was it because she was dressed so differently from before that I couldn’t recognize her immediately?
That’s right. While it was a far cry from her appearance when I didn’t even know her name at the library, this wasn’t the first time I’d seen her like this. I had passed by her a few times at school, but why couldn’t I react instantly and recognize her? Was my memory failing me?
Wait, now isn’t the time to dwell on this!
What did she just call me?
Lord Juncheng?
Why would she use such a respectful term for me?
Even Lily doesn’t use such honorifics!
I opened my mouth in surprise, intending to ask what was going on.
But there was still a killer in front of us, narrowing her eyes and watching us intently. It clearly wasn’t the time for a conversation, so I closed my mouth again.
To avoid causing trouble for Yuhui Bai, I wanted to stand up, but she placed a hand on my shoulder, stopping me.
Then she moved to face me, boldly exposing her back to Tong Jialin, as if completely disregarding the possibility of an attack from behind.
Yuhui Bai blushed slightly upon seeing my bare upper body, then displayed a somewhat annoyed expression. As she took off her jacket, she said to me.
“She actually did something so excessive to you… It’s all my fault. If I had arrived sooner, you wouldn’t have had to endure such hardship. Actually, all my scratches are self-inflicted. Xue Qing and Tong Jialin were merely catalysts and indirect contributing factors.”
Of course, these minor scratches were quite worth it. Otherwise, I might have lost a finger or two, or perhaps an eyeball or two…
However, Yuhui Bai seemed to believe I should have been completely unharmed. After covering me with her jacket, she turned to face Tong Jialin, adjusted her black gloves, and said with a nonchalant tone.
“Please wait a moment, I’ll deal with this apparition before you.”
Her tone was full of confidence.
If her title was as quirky as the oddballs in my class, I might have had some expectations…
But her title is [Reincarnated Childhood Friend], which is utterly meaningless!
Still, seeing that the beans and peach pits she threw earlier had an effect indicated that she knew how to deal with killers.
Hmm? But why would beans and peach pits work? They aren’t ghost-exorcising tools… Ghosts, killing… difficult…
As I was pondering, Tong Jialin made another move. Perhaps Yuhui Bai’s declaration had displeased her. She retorted with a mocking smile.
“Oh ho? Deal with it? Little girl, aren’t you overestimating yourself?”
“I think it’s you who’s like a frog in a well. Let me guess what’s possessing you… Hmm, a Hundred-Eyed Ghost, right?”
As soon as these words were spoken, Tong Jialin’s expression instantly changed. Her smile vanished, and she looked at Yuhui Bai with utmost seriousness, exuding a terrifying killing intent once more.
“Moreover, it looks like you’ve already taken quite a few eyes, over thirty, haven’t you? What, do you want to become a ghost too? Refusing to be a good person and choosing to be a ghost, truly hopeless.”
Her words were aggressive and very effective in provoking a reaction.
Tong Jialin’s face had turned a shade of dark purple, and her body trembled slightly. Her title emitted a blinding red light, her killing intent palpable!
This reaction indicated that Yuhui Bai had hit the mark on all counts.
But, a Hundred-Eyed Ghost?
I remembered it as a female ghost with eyes all over her body, seducing men and stealing their eyes for herself… Ah!
Isn’t that exactly what Tong Jialin had been doing!
So that’s why she became the Eye-Collecting Killer – because she was possessed by a Hundred-Eyed Ghost!
“According to legend, ashes from Buddha incense are best for dealing with you… However, I’m not fully prepared this time, so let’s make do with prayer beads. Besides, prayer beads should be enough to handle you.”
With that, Yuhui Bai took out a string of prayer beads from her waist pouch and held them in her hand.
Is this really going to work?
I still find it unreliable.
Tong Jialin’s anger turned into laughter, her expression ferocious as she rapidly approached us.
“You seem to know a lot about ‘us’, little girl. This is the first time I’ve had the urge to not only gouge out your eyes but to completely dismember you! ~”
There has to be a limit even to taunting, right?
Then again, this might be Yuhui Bai’s plan. They say when people get too angry, their vision narrows, and they often act rashly without thinking. Yuhui Bai might be hoping that Tong Jialin’s fury would make her careless and reveal an opening.
And so far, it was working very well.
Tong Jialin slowly walked towards us, but just as she was about to enter striking distance, she suddenly stopped, lowered her head, and clutched her forehead…
When she looked up again, her ferocious expression had returned to normal.
“Honestly, weren’t you saying there was no one around? Why are bothersome people appearing one after another? And both of you are so irritating.”
Ah, I mustn’t get angry. Getting angry causes wrinkles~!
…She’s suddenly not angry anymore? No, is she holding back?
This woman Tong Jialin is more patient than I imagined…
“Looks like today’s target is in the area I’m supposed to search. Is that right? Little brother?”
Tsk, she saw through me!
“Oh~Judging by your expression, I guessed right, didn’t I? Surprised? This might be what they call a woman’s intuition, ho ho~ I’m going to get the big prize this time~”
“Don’t even think about it.”
I won’t let you find Xue Qing!
“That’s right. Even if you know, so what? You’re destined to lose here anyway.”
Yuhui Bai finished my sentence, speaking with great assurance.
It was as if she had already claimed her victory.
“Sister… talking so boastfully, you’re a bit too arrogant! Let this big sister teach you how to restrain yourself! ~”
No need to hold back any longer!
Tong Jialin, finally bursting, like she was chasing me earlier, floated towards us stealthily and attacked Yuhui Bai with incredibly strange speed.
I watched from the side, my heart pounding, but Yuhui Bai remained unfazed, standing still and waiting for the attack.
Then, just as she was about to be hit, she blocked the incoming attack with the prayer beads in her hand while simultaneously thrusting a tree branch towards Tong Jialin’s chest with her other hand.
Tong Jialin’s reaction was still quick. Realizing the significance of the branch, she didn’t say a word and kicked Yuhui Bai away.
It seemed that even this inconspicuous branch was something that countered Tong Jialin.
What happened next was beyond anyone’s expectation. Yuhui Bai was kicked away, but the prayer beads were no longer in her hand!
Where were they?
In the air!
At some point, Yuhui Bai had tossed the prayer beads above Tong Jialin’s head, and they had been disassembled!
The individual prayer beads fell like scattered flowers, and Tong Jialin couldn’t dodge them, so she could only cover her head with her hands to avoid being hit.
But Yuhui Bai didn’t let the immobile Tong Jialin off the hook. After steadying herself and regaining her balance, she immediately ran towards Tong Jialin and threw various small beans from her waist pouch at her. After the prayer beads finished falling, Tong Jialin didn’t even have time to catch her breath before the beans followed, leaving her still unable to move.
By this time, Yuhui Bai had reached her and directly pulled out a talisman and stuck it onto Tong Jialin’s forehead!
Her actions were seamless, a flurry of motion!
“Aaaaaaah!”
A black aura emanated from Tong Jialin, and then, from her shadow, a dark figure suddenly leaped out, emitting an angry shriek. It then dissipated into the air along with the black mist.
“The talisman I put on you is a ‘Ghost Exorcism Charm’. The Hundred-Eyed Ghost possessing you has been driven out. Thus, the power the ghost lent you is also gone.”
Without the ghost’s power, that means…
“You are now just an ordinary woman. Judging by your attire, it must be inconvenient for you to move… Do you still want to continue fighting?”
Come to think of it, Tong Jialin’s clothing was indeed unsuitable for any significant movement. In fact, wearing such high heels, let alone running, it would be difficult to even walk briskly. Her earlier elusive movements and incredible speed were all due to the ghost’s power.
Indeed, Tong Jialin’s face turned ashen with fright, her complexion turning pale. She bit her lower lip, a look of despair on her face.
Then, she immediately put on a flattering smile and said to Yuhui Bai.
“Oh my, thank you so much, little sister~ You know, big sister was momentarily confused… Can you forgive big sister just this once? Actually, those actions earlier were all ordered by the ghost possessing me! Yes! I was controlled! If I didn’t do as it said, I would have been eaten. Those weren’t my intentions at all!”
Lies and deceit.
Doesn’t she feel any guilt?
To ensure her own safety, she readily sold out her accomplice…
…Whether you were controlled or not, I’m not interested.
Yuhui Bai remained unmoved, stating calmly.
“However, the ‘Ghost Exorcism Charm’ only temporarily drives away the ghost possessing you. It does not break the contract you made with the ghost.”
The fake smile froze on her face.
Tong Jialin was completely petrified.
“You have a telepathic connection with the ghost you serve, so that ghost should have heard everything you just said… Ghosts detest betrayal…”
Yuhui Bai looked at the completely broken Tong Jialin with pity and delivered the fatal blow.
“Take care of yourself.”
While saying “take care of yourself,” the true meaning in her words was “you’re dead.”
Tong Jialin slumped to the ground in exhaustion, flailing her limbs, her eyes vacant as she cried and giggled foolishly, a yellow liquid flowing from beneath her.
She had completely fallen into despair.
Her life had entered its final countdown… the ghost would not spare her.
Without inflicting any physical harm, and not even using a proper weapon, Yuhui Bai achieved a complete victory!
She simply employed a few tactics and then used words to destabilize her opponent, completely crushing a killer!
Wow…
Isn’t this a bit too much…
Yuhui Bai is amazing.
I still couldn’t believe what I was seeing, but Yuhui Bai had already turned back, smiling and seeking my commendation.
“What do you think, Lord Juncheng? Do you see me in a new light?”
More than seeing me in a new light…
I felt like kneeling and hugging your leg, shouting, “Coach, I want to learn exorcism!”
And you’re still calling me Lord Juncheng? I should be calling you Big Sister Yuhui!
