“Nice to meet you, Dolf Ein. Though I know you can’t hear me, as it’s our first meeting, I’ll introduce myself.”
With his flaxen hair rippling, a small boy, appearing to be in his mid-teens, greets the corpse with its head severed from its body. It was an eerie sight. Any human with normal senses witnessing this would either assume the boy was insane or, terrified by the abnormality, call for the Knights.
The boy gently picks up Dolf’s rolling head and licks his cheek.
“It’s truly a shame. But I think you did well. I never imagined you’d betray Waalthe, no, betray that Wahash and plot to kill him. Were you unable to comprehend the difference in strength? Or did you understand it and try to surpass it?”
The boy smiles as he merrily converses with the severed head.
“I was watching the whole time. The fight between Jared Murphy and Luzer was thrilling. To think there were still magicians left who fought like brawlers in this era! It made me feel a little nostalgic and my heart fluttered.”
The boy had been watching. From the moment Jared and the others surrounded the Norland Count Family, he had been observing the battle the entire time, unnoticed by anyone.
“I wanted to help you, but honestly, you seemed useless. And I didn’t want to meet Wahash by interfering rashly, so I didn’t reach out. I’m sorry. I’m not particularly regretful, but I apologize.”
Laughing cheerfully, the boy toys with the severed head in his palm. His appearance was truly abnormal.
“Rasmus, it’s almost time.”
“Ah, Drew, you always arrive at the perfect moment.”
The boy—Rasmus—smiles at Drew Zimmer, the one-armed boy who, after being presumed dead in a battle with the Knights following his rampage fueled by drugs during a previous fight with Jared, had been resurrected.
“You were watching Jared Murphy’s fight too, weren’t you? What did you think?”
“He is as strong as ever. That is all.”
“I, however, have come to desire him. Not just him, but Pfeil and Luzer Fisher as well. I’ve come to think of them as family, just like you. Do you object?”
“No. I agree.”
Towards Jared, with whom he had a past entanglement, Drew replies calmly. Drew Zimmer had been reborn. Therefore, he had already overcome all past events as if they never happened. Now, he lived solely for his beloved master and family. Thus, if strong individuals joined their family, Drew would be delighted.
“However, Jared Murphy likely won’t come here. He has too many ties. Severing all of them to come here will probably be difficult.”
“Hmm. In that sense, Luzer Fisher and Pfeil are the same. Then, should I kill everything they hold dear, kill them, kill them all, and drive them to despair, they might come here?”
“They would undoubtedly resent us. In the end, they would become our enemies.”
Despite living for so long, Drew’s cheek softens at his master, who still acted like a child. Rasmus sighs regretfully and then, with a resigned air, shifts his focus.
“Setting those three aside for now, let’s focus on Dolf Ein.”
“Shall we move?”
“No, here is fine. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, although the view from atop the building is good, we won’t be seen.”
“Thank you for your concern,” he says, bowing deeply to his master.
“Well then, Dolf Ein. Let me introduce myself. I am Rasmus. A demon. You see, I have found the sole value in you, whom Wahash abandoned. And that is to become my sustenance. Do you understand what that means? Yes, you probably don’t. But you will naturally come to understand.”
Rasmus kisses Dolf’s forehead and gently places the head on the ground. He then approaches the fallen body and tears open its clothes with a knife.
“Ah, good. There’s still magic left in your body. Humans lose their magic power when they die, so it’s best when they’re alive, but that’s incredibly painful for the other party. I don’t wish for that, either. But you won’t feel pain anymore, will you? So… I’m sorry.”
He plunges the knife into the chest of the silent corpse and pulls it out in one swift motion. Blood gushes from the chest, but Rasmus, unconcerned, shoves both hands into the ripped opening and forcefully pulls them apart. The sound of cracking ribs echoes as blood vessels, nerves, and flesh tear apart.
“Phew… I think this every time, but it’s quite a struggle.”
From the opened chest, the heart is revealed. While a normal person would avert their eyes, not only Rasmus, covered in blood, but also Drew remained unfazed.
“Well then, from now on, you will become my sustenance, a part of me. Let us walk together, Dolf. Now… I will begin.”
Rasmus opens his mouth wide and sinks his teeth into the heart. His mouth is stained crimson, and his act of devouring a human makes him appear monstrous. As he himself declared, he was indeed a demon. Rasmus, with Drew watching, unblinkingly continued to eat Dolf Ein’s body.
