Jiro Tanaka, 28 years old, has a girlfriend.
His girlfriend is Suella Handelberg.
Memoria Tris.
Occupation: Dungeon Tester (Full-time employee)
Magic Aptitude: 9 (Quasi Demon Lord Class)
Position: Warrior.
When I heard it was my child, the first emotion that came to mind was surprise, but the next that followed was joy.
“Is it true?”
“Yes.”
“I see, I see.”
I confirmed with Suella to ensure she wasn’t lying, and she met my gaze directly as she replied.
As the reality sank in, an indescribable warmth welled up from deep within my chest, and my voice naturally softened.
After repeating the same words as if savoring them, my gaze naturally drifted to her abdomen, where life resided.
Thinking that my child was growing there filled me with a warmth I had never felt before.
“Jiro-san, um, about what happens next…”
“Ah, yes. First, we need to get a proper examination at the hospital… Wait, can’t we use the hospital here? Well, if she’s here, the examination is probably already done. Or maybe we should register our marriage at the city hall first? But our family registries are different. Ah, no, we should introduce ourselves to her parents first. Or rather, I need to contact my mother. The wedding venue can wait, right? Ah, no, she wants me to touch her stomach, but I can’t do that wearing armor.”
As I hastily removed the armor I had on, I thought about what needed to be done, but the shock was so great that my thoughts were disorganized, and I didn’t know where to start.
I vaguely understood that there was no time to be leisurely, but I didn’t know what exactly I should be doing.
Seeing me like this, Suella, with a worried expression, asked about what was to come.
That’s right, if we’re going to have a child, there will be many things we need to do.
Fortunately, my income is not just average; it’s easily five or six times that of a normal person.
There are no financial worries.
First, I need to create an environment where the child can be born healthy.
“Um, can I… have the baby?”
“Huh? Of course. More importantly, I want you to have it.”
“!? ”
“Hey, what, Suella!!”
I, myself, had only answered honestly out of reflex.
But as a result, Suella’s eyes suddenly welled up with tears before my confused eyes.
Just as my mind was struggling to process everything, she suddenly started crying, and I panicked, wondering if I had done something wrong.
“Wh-what’s wrong? Did I say something bad?”
Even if it wasn’t my fault, I worried that I might have said something that hurt her. I gently grabbed Suella’s shoulder, trying to meet her gaze, but she leaned into me, sobbing. She shook her head silently in response to my question, offering no useful reply.
Stumped, I did what I could and patted her back until she calmed down.
As I let my gaze wander, wondering what to do, it naturally overlapped with Memoria.
She, whose gaze had met mine, responded to my unspoken question of “why” by softening her expression and speaking quietly.
“She must have been anxious. I heard that in this world, there are men who abandon their partners as soon as they find out they’re pregnant.”
“Huh? Wasn’t I trusted?”
If that were the case, it would be nothing short of a shock.
However, Memoria lightly shook her head, denying it.
“I don’t think Jiro-san is like that, but this book says there are such men in this world too.”
As if to explain why Suella was crying, Memoria gently presented a magazine she had retrieved via spatial transfer.
“…Isn’t the information a bit biased?”
“My colleague recommended this as the best way to get to know the men of this world…”
It wasn’t entirely wrong, but it wasn’t correct either, and I could only give a wry smile.
I wondered who on earth had recommended such a thing.
It was a magazine that primarily dealt with scandals rather than entertainment. It was a bit against my will to think that all the men in this world would be like that.
Especially if it had influenced Suella.
Generally speaking, giving birth is a huge decision for a woman.
It’s an area that men cannot fully comprehend.
It’s an issue from a realm beyond a man’s understanding, and while the information was somewhat biased, I could understand Suella’s anxiety upon learning it as a piece of information about this world.
Therefore, it is a man’s role to remove that anxiety and support her, and from Suella’s perspective, that is my role.
I reassured her by placing my hand on her back.
“Also, like us vampires, Dark Elves have long lifespans. Perhaps because of that nature, it’s uncommon to conceive this early in pregnancy. That’s why, as a race that finds it difficult to conceive, we tend to be sensitive about the act of childbirth. Therefore…”
As if to assist her, Memoria gently stroked Suella’s head.
Even her usually expressionless face was now filled with a gentle smile emanating from deep affection.
“She’s probably happy. To be told by the person she loves to have a child. We know that Dark Elves are a devoted race. However, despite their pure devotion, we often hear stories of relationships that break down because of that very devotion. This often happens between different races, such as humans and Dark Elves.”
The thought of “what ifs” was frightening enough to imagine.
I had similar experiences myself.
The word “maybe” can sometimes be interpreted in a positive light, but it can also be interpreted negatively just as often.
For Suella, in this particular situation, it seemed to have been interpreted negatively.
While I don’t know the specifics of Dark Elf society, seeing Suella’s current state suggests that Memoria’s story is more personal and realistic than I might have imagined.
Therefore…
“Suella, what should we name the child?”
I gently stroked her back as she continued to cry and brought up the topic of the future.
“A Japanese name like mine might be nice, but a name that sounds like it’s from Suella’s world would be good too. The name will change depending on whether it’s a boy or a girl, so let’s think about it together.”
I spoke gently to her, and she nodded in my chest, and I could feel her gradually calming down.
“Before that, we need to go and greet Suella’s parents. My father-in-law might punch me. ‘What are you doing to my daughter!'”
“If you do something like that, I’ll… blow up my father with magic.”
“Oh, that’s encouraging.”
So, I changed the subject playfully, and finally, Suella showed me her face.
Her eyes were red from crying, but there was undoubtedly a smile on her face.
“Well then, shall we talk about what comes next?”
Seeing that she had calmed down, I sat down next to her on the bed.
“Honestly, I’m just trying to get a handle on the situation myself, but is your body okay, Suella?”
“Yes, my body is fine.”
“I see. Well, that’s a relief for now… In that case…”
“Jiro-san?”
“Is something wrong?”
Seeing me lost in thought, they asked.
However, for just a moment, I asked them to wait.
When I heard the words “what to do from now on,” the first thing that came to my mind was the word “marriage.”
I had two women before me.
Suella, the Dark Elf, and Memoria, the Vampire.
It happened by chance, but I had been seeing and spending time with both of them.
It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that having them by my side had become my everyday life.
The idea of marrying only one of them simply didn’t occur to me, which was likely a side effect of being “poisoned” by the common sense of the Isal world.
Without answering, after a few seconds of silence, I reached a conclusion.
Waiting for my decision, I took each of their hands.
“Suella, Memoria.”
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
Honestly, I felt that this kind of action should be done with more preparation, valuing the occasion and atmosphere, but then again, if not now, when?
I’m also approaching thirty.
The talk about the child might have been a good trigger.
So, a man must have courage.
Holding their hands, I knelt on the spot and looked up at them.
“I’m sorry, I’m clumsy, so I can only say words like these. So, I’ll say it clearly. …I can’t let you go. I love both of you. So, will you marry me?”
I even threw in some excuses, but I just blurted it out with momentum.
However, these were undoubtedly my true feelings.
The place was the infirmary, a strange place to propose, and I had neither a wedding ring nor even a bouquet of flowers.
And to two women at the same time.
Normally, I would expect to be slapped or kicked.
Even so, my heart urged me to say it now.
I was filled with anxiety until I went to the infirmary, then shaken with astonishment, and then filled with joy. My heart was more tense than ever before.
I might be rejected.
Even so, I didn’t want any regrets.
A perfect proposal?
Who cares about that!!
Making them wait any longer was something I couldn’t do.
“…”
Feeling the warmth of their hands from my fingertips, I silently waited for their reply.
I didn’t look away and stared at both of their faces.
Suella and Memoria exchanged glances and nodded.
The hands not holding mine gently rested on top of my clasped hands.
” ” “Yes.” ” ”
And then, their short but heartfelt, gentle, and happy replies reached my ears.
If this were a dream, it would be in poor taste.
If this were just a convenient dream I was having while still working at my old company, I didn’t want to wake up from it.
Because this feeling of happiness, of joy, was something I had never experienced before.
I didn’t want to believe this feeling was a dream.
” “Don’t ever let us go, okay?” ”
“Yeah!”
The feeling of endearment must be what I’m feeling right now.
It is irreplaceable.
I was certain that if I lost this feeling, I would experience an immeasurable sense of loss, so much did it fill the emptiness in my heart with a warm feeling.
I hugged both of them.
And they hugged me back.
That warmth and the warmth in my heart connected.
I had now obtained something so precious.
“Ah… Um, I’m sorry. First, let me congratulate you. And I understand that this is a touching moment, and I realize it’s rude, but this is an infirmary. If you could please consider the time and place, it would be helpful for me too.”
“Oh, how rude! You interrupted something interesting!”
“Long live the Dark Elves! Well done!! Good news, Chieftain! Chieftain!”
” ” “Ah.” ” ”
If it had ended here, it would have been a perfect conclusion, but the Lizardman doctor, looking genuinely apologetic from the back of the infirmary, and the Demon doctor whistling provocatively, and behind them, the Dark Elf doctor, shouting “Good news, good news!” and sending telepathic messages somewhere.
“Ah, sorry. That didn’t end well.”
“No, Jiro-san, you were cool.”
“This seems like a memory that will last a lifetime.”
“I’m glad to hear that.”
We could only give a wry smile at the Lizardman doctor, who cleared his throat and looked at us as we gazed at each other, smiling.
“Well, let’s discuss what happens next, shall we? In another room.”
“That sounds good.”
“Yes.”
This was not the right place.
Let’s move to another location and talk about our future.
With a questioning glance, I asked the Lizardman doctor if we could be discharged, and he replied, “By all means.”
Holding each of their hands, we left the infirmary.
“Is it my turn next?”
“Yes, it’s Memoria’s turn next. Good luck, Jiro-san.”
“I’ll do my best to make it happen.”
What happened today was a bigger event than any planned event involving the company.
