“Wow, I haven’t held a weapon in ages!”
“It’s not just that it feels like it, it’s actually been ages for me.”
“Haven’t you been practicing swings? You’ll get rusty.”
“Ugh, now that you mention it…”
After finishing the long theoretical lectures, our minds began to overflow with knowledge of the otherworld, and we had just cleared the first half of our training.
From here on out, it’s the fun, fun, practical combat training.
This is the kind of content that can be considered the true calling of the Demon Lord’s Army.
I believe my trembling legs are a sign of my growth, not fear of what’s to come, and I’m convinced that the tension resonating within my body is a stimulating factor that enhances my concentration.
Even Jiro, who had been away from dungeon攻略 for two weeks, now gripped the Ore Tree, which he had only swung as practice, and held it anew.
While attending the theoretical lectures, I had only practiced meditation and swung my weapon occasionally, but surprisingly, my body hadn’t become dull.
I swung it lightly, testing my senses, and found I could move just as well as before.
I had been worried about status reductions, but it seemed there was no need for that.
Thinking that I could fight much better against the instructors than before with this skill, I glanced at Kaido and saw him frantically getting into a stance and checking his body movements, as if he had done absolutely nothing.
His movements seemed purely for confirmation, and as Kaido said when he mentioned it, he had indeed slacked off on all combat-related activities for two weeks, making his frequent body movements and sensory checks appear somewhat awkward.
However, as far as I could see, his body movements themselves weren’t dull, so I thought he would regain his senses in a short while and be fine.
What worries me more is…
“My head feels like it’s going to split open, gojaru.”
“Are you alright?”
“I-I can’t do it, gojaru. So, I’m going to stay in my room.”
“Drink a potion.”
“Normally, people would be concerned and tell me to rest here, wouldn’t they!? While a potion can restore my physical condition, that’s not what I mean, gojaru!?”
“If you’re intending to skip out by faking illness, then drink it all the more. That way, you won’t have any excuses.”
He’s the other one in our training group who seems like he’d sneak in games.
I was worried he wouldn’t be in perfect condition due to staying up late, but as expected, she’s the “mom” of our party.
She seems to be taking good care of Minami’s physical condition.
Looking at the one I was worried about, he was indeed causing a bit of a commotion, but their exchange eased my apprehension.
Minami, feigning illness before the upcoming practical training, and Katsu, who saw right through it.
Despite the exaggerated acting, he casually offered a familiar container right in front of me, as if he was genuinely concerned.
Sighing, thinking he could do it if he wanted to, but was just bad at activating his motivation switch, I occasionally offered corrections to Kaido’s warm-up movements while scanning the other members.
“Karen-chan, what are we doing for training today?”
“They said we’d be working on overcoming weaknesses, so for me, it’ll probably be close-combat countermeasures, but for Amī…”
“For me, I wonder? I’m not good at many things, yo. I hope it’s not studying.”
“Don’t worry, Amī. The fact that you’re here means it’s probably not theoretical study. For you, it’ll likely be magic. You have the Sage’s knowledge, so it’ll be about expanding in that direction and overcoming your weaknesses. You’re not used to it yet, are you? Magic.”
“Maybe so!”
Kitamiya and Amelia were discussing what today’s training would entail.
Kitamiya remembered being told by the supervisor that they would work on individual weaknesses and recalled what they were going to do today.
Is Kitamiya alright for now?
A question mark appeared in my mind, but at a glance, she seemed as usual.
Without showing any concern for the interaction between Katsu and Minami, she was talking with Amelia.
“…Kaido, how was Kitamiya’s condition? Recently.”
“Huh? She seemed normal as usual, though? As usual… as usual, she was a bit harsh towards me, though.”
“Don’t be intimidated by a junior.”
“I can’t help it!! Kitamiya-chan is more competent than me at work!!”
“Don’t say ‘-mons’ like a grown adult. Honestly.”
I confirmed with Kaido just in case, but it was no help.
For a moment, he paused, then thought with a hum, before quickly answering that it was nothing.
From what I heard, everything was normal.
While relieved by his answer, I couldn’t dismiss the question about the relationship between Kaido and Kitamiya.
Despite his appearance and speech, Kaido possessed grit and was serious about his work.
Although clumsy, Kitamiya, who is skilled and completes tasks efficiently, sometimes has a poor rapport with types like Kaido who are meticulous and consistent in their work.
However, Kaido, despite his speech and appearance, has a good heart and can be a mood-maker. Kitamiya sensed and understood this atmosphere, which is why they seemed to be getting along fairly well.
In a similar vein, the relationship between Kitamiya and Minami was also like that.
Both were capable of being efficient if they put their minds to it, but their personality compatibility was not quite there.
One could do things if motivated, but wouldn’t if not.
The other possessed both motivation and persistence.
Even though they were both capable of being efficient, their natures were different.
It was clear which one of them would be valued more in the real world, but that didn’t matter now.
While the two of them acknowledged certain aspects of each other, the parts they couldn’t accept were hindering them.
It was a matter of individual personalities, and it wasn’t a major issue for us, but it was something to consider when working.
As Tatte-san worked effectively, we…
“Well, I guess I’ll just put in the effort.”
“Yeah, let’s do that.”
Seeing the instructors enter the room, I decided to worry about myself rather than others. Like us, who were preparing for battle, Instructor Kio, Instructor Fushio, and the supervisor were also dressed for combat today. Instructor Kio, who usually wore a white suit that made him look like some yakuza, was dressed in something like a gi. I knew the instructors’ primary fighting style was bare-handed combat, so his karate-like attire was understandable. Instructor Fushio, no longer in his usual tuxedo, was adorned with various accessories and wore a robe-like garment that exuded immense magical power. Following him, golden and silver staffs floated on either side. While not overly ornate, the immense magic stones at the tips of the staffs and the patterns on the scattered magic stones of various sizes were captivating. Finally, seeing the supervisor clad in matte black armor that prioritized functionality, we realized the full extent of this training, breaking out in a cold sweat. Seeing the three of them at full strength, we stopped chatting, though time hadn’t yet indicated it, and quickly assembled before them.
“Well done. Are you all here?”
“Yes!”
Battle Ready Stance. The feeling of those words walking towards us as we greeted them instantly put us on edge. I loudly responded to the supervisor’s confirmation, and he nodded with satisfaction. Someone gulped, wondering what kind of unimaginable training awaited them, and the air in the vast space became so oppressive that it felt cramped.
“Starting today, training will include practical combat. Although you are Magic Bodies, we have a complete treatment system in place. I want everyone to approach the upcoming training with an awareness of their areas for improvement and the points they need to develop.”
“”YES!””
Our backs straightened at the supervisor’s exhortation. What would they do? As we had been informed of nothing beforehand, we had no way to prepare. Although that anxiety simmered within, believing that with these three, it would be a valuable experience, we weren’t swayed by that concern. I felt confident we could handle anything, even if it meant fighting Instructor Kio one-on-one. My prediction was that the frontliners, myself and Kaido, would fight Instructor Kio, the mid-liners and support members, Katsu and Amelia, would face the supervisor, and the backliners, Kitamiya and Minami, would be assigned to Instructor Fushio.
“Oni King, leave the others to me. Alright?”
“Ooh! I’ll raise them well!”
However, that prediction was completely wrong. With us fully prepared, the supervisor turned to Instructor Kio and gave instructions as if confirming. That statement felt as if the supervisor and Instructor Fushio were going to train an individual. Instructor Kio, giving a thumbs-up, made me think, *No way.*
“Jiro, you will be facing me and the Undead King. The others will train with Oni King.”
“What?”
Where had the spirited response from moments ago gone? Unaware of the sympathetic atmosphere emanating from my side, my mind was temporarily overloaded by the prospect of facing the supervisor and Instructor Fushio, unable to accept the reality. With that, Instructor Kio led Kaido and the others away, leaving me, the supervisor, and Instructor Fushio.
“How long are you going to stand there in a daze?”
“Y-yes!”
With no choice but to watch them leave, I straightened my back, thinking, *Seriously?* and prepared myself for what was to come.
“I won’t eat you. I explained this before, didn’t I? Your position is extremely precarious. Ideally, I wouldn’t want to do this, but these are extraordinary times. It will be drastic, but this is the most efficient way to improve your skills, even if only slightly.”
“Kaka kaka, don’t worry, you won’t die. Don’t worry, it won’t be so painful that you’ll die.”
“R-right.”
Even so, my caution, honed since joining this company, kept screaming warnings. *Don’t let your guard down, something’s coming.*
“Are you two going to spar with me, meaning we’ll be practicing magic?”
Still, I couldn’t just stand there. So, I made a bold decision to ask about what was next. Above all, I needed to grasp what we were going to do.
“We’ll do that too.”
“That too? So, we’ll be doing close-combat as well? Will we be joining Instructor Kio later?”
Facing the combination of the supervisor and Instructor Fushio, I had thought they would train me in magic as a means to extend my range in long-distance attacks, which was my weakness. However, they denied that, saying we would be doing close-combat training. If that was the case, why did they break up the combination with Instructor Kio? I thought it would be sufficient if the supervisor took care of Kaido and the others, and Instructor Fushio and Instructor Kio handled them together like before. Honestly, it would be tough, but I thought it would be better than being handled by the two backline instructors.
“Kaka kaka, what are you talking about? Who is facing Jiro…”
“It’s me. We’ll start training immediately. Take your stance.”
Hearing a sound as if something had been swung, I looked towards the source, the supervisor. There he stood, wielding a sword in each hand. Not swords of a length manageable with one hand, but greatswords of the same length as my Ore Tree, one in each hand. I realized that must be why there was that sound like crushing wind pressure, and now I understood that the supervisor primarily fought up close.
“Oni King is better at bare-handed combat. While he can teach close-combat methods, when it comes to wielding weapons, Evia is more skilled. After all, she is the Demon Lord’s Army’s foremost Magic Sword User.”
“This is a good opportunity to hone your unconventional sword techniques. Learn to your heart’s content.”
“…Understood.”
The supervisor’s stance was incredibly imposing. Ah, I see. Understanding the situation, I naturally reached for my Ore Tree and took my stance. Come to think of it, when was the last time I had someone teach me swordsmanship like this? Since joining this company, I had only been taught through practical application and had not studied swordsmanship. The fact that it had worked for me meant I hadn’t considered it necessary. Conversely, this was a good chance to see how far that skill would take me.
“Please train me!!”
There was no concept of going easy on me because I was a woman. Recalling being beaten soundly before.
“I’ll go all out!!”
From the first move, I wrapped the roots of the Ore Tree around my arm, connected it, and attacked with increased sharpness.
