Katsu is desired by two women, Kitamiya and Minami, who are very different from each other.
From a man’s perspective, it might be an enviable scene, but the relationship is quite difficult.
The human relationships between these three were maintained in a delicate balance, but that equilibrium was shattered by Kawasaki Midori.
Minami asked for my help in dealing with it, but frankly, as a man, I couldn’t immediately come up with any brilliant ideas on how to handle it.
“Speaking of which, Kitamiya, I have something I’d like to consult you about.”
It was a topic that was too risky to explain honestly.
“Jiro-san’s consultation, is it troublesome again?”
In such a situation, the only thing I could do was buy time.
“No, it’s not troublesome.”
“Really? But I’ve never experienced anything that wasn’t troublesome from you.”
“…It should be relatively not troublesome.”
“I see. And what is it you wanted to consult about?”
And to change the subject. It was good that I changed the topic with the idea of holding a separate meeting to strategize, but perhaps due to my usual behavior, Kitamiya asked me back with a slightly displeased look on her face.
“Well, actually…”
I thought about whether I was really burdened with so much trouble, and then wished I hadn’t. Defeated by how many things I could recall, I summarized the gist of what Evia had told me.
To put it simply, I was going to be inundated with proposals for political marriages as people would try to leverage my position and establish any connection, however slight. This would extend not only to me but also to my children. In order to weed them out and reduce the number, I wanted to appeal myself as a devoted husband and doting father.
“An engagement proposal to Yukiera-chan and Sachiera-chan, I can’t believe it. However, if that’s true, I can understand Jiro-san and Evia-san’s thinking.”
Kitamiya, in a conventional sense, showed confusion at the unfamiliar concepts from their world. She rested her hand on her chin, a question mark hovering over her face as if asking, “Can such a thing happen?” but for now, she seemed to believe me because it was coming from me.
“Right? I don’t doubt that I love Suella and the others, and I’ve always admired the line ‘As a man, I won’t give you my daughter!’ so I’m willing to act it out.”
Kitamiya listened to my story with an expression of half disbelief and half astonishment. Then, she slowly removed her hand from her chin.
“If you don’t want to be disliked by Yukiera-chan and Sachiera-chan when they bring boyfriends home in the future, you absolutely shouldn’t say that.”
She criticized my actions.
“…Is that no good?”
“It’s no good. If my father said that to me, I’m confident I’d get angry.”
I was a little dejected, having my cherished line for a father cut down so easily.
“Even so, what should I do? That’s where the conversation leads back. I want to be a doting father to Yukiera and Sachiera without inconveniencing them, but if I hold back too much, it’ll be meaningless. If I overdo it, I worry they might not get married later. It’s about finding the right balance, or rather, I have no idea how to do it.”
“Jiro-san, you’ve certainly become a father.”
“Well, I am the father of two, after all.”
I could vaguely imagine how to be a loving husband, perhaps by boasting about Evia, Suella, Memoria, and Himik at parties. But with the children, it wasn’t that simple.
As I murmured, I received gentle gazes from Kitamiya and Minami.
“Jiro-san, how do you want to settle for?”
“My idea is, well, I’d like it if the children could have romantic freedom in the future. If I may say so, I don’t see the necessity of territorial expansion through political marriage.”
“The fact that you can say that is because the leader’s social connections are extraordinary. You’re on good terms with more than half of the generals, engaged to the daughter of a great noble, and married to the daughter of a major merchant house! It’s unheard of. Normally, newcomers have a shaky foundation, are bullied by their superiors, and then colleagues and subordinates trip them up. I thought that was how people struggled.”
“By the way, I only thought of Memoria as a simple shop clerk. She confessed to me, and we gradually built our relationship. I wasn’t trying to aim for an advantageous marriage. And Minami, that’s the basic principle in a black company.”
“Stop saying silly things, both of you, and think seriously. The main issue is Yukiera-chan and Sachiera-chan.”
Although there was still time before work started, time was not infinite. They both had work to do later.
“Even so. My ideas are based on manga and dramas, so if you told me to actually do it, I can’t come up with concrete actions.”
While I was receiving their advice and trying to be serious, I couldn’t concretely figure out what to do when I was simply told to be a doting father.
“Why not just say, ‘If you want to get engaged, defeat the leader’? That seems quicker, and it fits the image of a doting father, in my opinion.”
“Are you trying to work the leader to death? He’s already busy enough, what are you going to do by increasing his workload further?”
“…Was that an option?”
Minami, standing behind me with her hands clasped, offered an idea that, while presented as quick, made me involuntarily think, “Maybe that’s not a bad idea.”
“No, Leader? I really hope you don’t take this seriously, but I imagine the Leader is also busy with dungeon construction, and if I cause him to die from overwork, my own life will be in danger.
“You should think a little before you speak.”
Minami panicked because I was starting to take it seriously. And unfortunately, as Minami said, I didn’t have enough time at this stage.
The dungeon construction was about to begin in earnest.
Combined with that, my time would become even more limited.
I wouldn’t have the luxury of dealing with each person individually and talking things through physically.
It seemed like a good idea, though.
“Damn, if only I had more time.”
“He looks genuinely regretful.”
“He does have a bit of a brute force mentality. Should I call it a jock-like way of thinking?”
“No, I think the instructors’ influence is definitely the strongest.”
It was a lifelong regret for Jiro Tanaka that he couldn’t even handle Yukiera and Sachiera’s matters due to work being too busy.
“Hey, Leader, we’ll think about it seriously too, so we’ll be back soon.”
“It’s your fault in the first place, isn’t it?”
While I was going through these internal struggles, I noticed Minami waving her hand in front of me, trying to get my attention, and my consciousness returned.
“For now, it might be better to think of methods other than beheading.”
“Yes, but we’re not very knowledgeable in that area either, are we? Shouldn’t we consult Memoria-san or Evia-san? They’d probably know more about noble relationships.”
I wished a good idea would come out of it, but unfortunately, none did. From the perspective of the wives like Suella, boasting and singing love songs would deter a certain number of women. However, as Keiri-san said, there are women who would see my nature as an advantage, so I would be busy dealing with such people.
That was unavoidable.
The problem was that with my daughters, boasting about their excellence would only increase the marriage proposals.
I had to act with a sense of appropriate distance.
As Kitamiya said, Evia and the others would be more knowledgeable about such matters and could politely refuse. However, for me, a rising power, that was a last resort, something I had to keep in reserve as much as possible.
“No, rather, if I refuse directly, it will cause problems in the future. Currently, if we create distance with other factions, it will be troublesome later.”
It was customary for newcomers to struggle in any world.
While I would make choices, it wasn’t a good strategy to miss an opportunity to connect.
It wouldn’t be easy to arrange negotiations to reconnect after a refusal.
If I were only considering my children and Suella, it would be easy to refuse them outright, but my position as a general did not allow for that.
“The ideal scenario is that I indirectly act as a doting father who is oblivious to these matters and doesn’t want to let his children go. Since I’m a general and have military strength, they can’t carelessly push further.”
“I see.”
“It’s difficult, isn’t it? Hearing that, I don’t want to get promoted anymore. The salary is good, and here, I might be able to stay a rank-and-file employee for life.”
“That’s probably not possible, is it? There’s the example of Jiro-san, and while everyone here is fine, from the outside, we’re Jiro-san’s direct subordinates.”
“That’s right.”
This had a greater or lesser impact on Minami and the others as well. Within the company, including Kaido, the expectations for the First Division were high.
There was also hope and a bit of apprehension that another force like mine might emerge, but it was a fact that the level of attention was higher than others.
“Hmm, even in another world, there was no such thing as a truly free position.”
“You’re not the type of person who cares about that kind of position from the start, are you?”
“That’s right.”
Even in this casual conversation between Minami and Kitamiya, they were treated as capable individuals within the Demon Lord’s Army.
In terms of overall ability, both still had areas where they were immature, but they still possessed considerable strength.
Considering that, they could be said to have grown considerably.
“Oh, the conversation has strayed again.”
“But in the end, isn’t there little that Jiro-san can do directly? Those kinds of relationships can’t be forced, right?”
“Well, unless I’m in dire straits.”
“Then, rather than doing something abruptly, shouldn’t we gradually let the idea spread?”
When we first met, there were many tense moments, but now we can talk openly like this.
They worry about my children.
We have built such a relationship.
Isn’t that a wonderful thing?
“Well, the safest bet would be to spread rumors indirectly that I’m not yet considering my children’s marriage.”
“Yes, normally, one would think it’s more problematic to persistently propose to Jiro-san and incur his displeasure.”
“That’s reasonable.”
“You could say normal.”
“Sorry for being normal. Then you propose an alternative.”
“Long live normal, normal is best.”
“What a complete reversal.”
And with that, I felt a sense of relief in the corner of my heart that the topic had been smoothly changed. Kitamiya was exasperated by Minami’s abrupt change of opinion, and as they were having such exchanges, only about ten minutes remained until the start of work.
Kaido and the others could have already come to the office.
“Katsu and Amelia are at school, but what about Kaido? If this continues, he’ll be late.”
“You’re right.”
“That’s strange. It’s a time when Senpai Kaido should already be here.”
But Kaido showed no signs of coming.
“Did he oversleep?”
“I vote that he was disciplined by Amili-san and the twins.”
“Stop it so early in the morning.”
While I was tilting my head in puzzlement, and the two of them weren’t overly worried, I thought that in a way, they trusted me. Then, one minute before the start of work, Kaido rushed in.
“Made it just in time!”
“Well, just in time.”
“Thirty seconds left, that was close.”
“It was almost a shame.”
“What about it?”
The office became livelier, and as everyone started preparing for work, Kaido arrived and noticed us.
“Ah, senpai! Good morning!”
“Ah, good morning. It’s unusual for you to be cutting it so close to being late. Did something happen?”
“My alarm clocks all failed.”
I thought there might have been some trouble and asked, but it turned out to be a minor incident that befell Kaido, given his usual behavior. There was no need to worry.
“Next time, I’ll get a sturdy one made by the giants.”
“I won’t ask why it broke. Now, it’s time to work. I kept you two longer than necessary.”
“It’s fine. I didn’t say anything particularly useful.”
“You can treat us to a meal next time as thanks.”
Today, work begins peacefully.
Or so I thought.
“Hmm?”
A sound from the PC announced the arrival of an email. Seeing the sender, my expression turned serious.
I opened the email and read through its contents.
“It’s finally here.”
I muttered.
