“Let go of me, brother! Please, for goodness sake! Let me go!”
He was surprisingly shaken, completely unlike the person who had been boasting about creating a harem just moments ago.
His panic was so extreme, it was almost like a template.
His face, previously flushed with excitement and bloodlust, turned completely pale, lacking any trace of vitality. All that remained was pure fear.
Seeing his sudden change, Evia also looked confused, wondering what was happening.
“Who has arrived?”
“Yes, it’s Lord Mura from the Mura family.”
…I hope combining his full name doesn’t lead to something R-rated. Is it just my overly sensitive interpretation, or does his name constantly sound like he’s in heat?
I often hear unusual names in this otherworld, but his is unlike any I’ve encountered before. For a moment, I almost accepted it, thinking, ‘Is this normal?’
No, anyone would react the same way upon hearing that name.
I suppressed a laugh that threatened to escape, maintaining a serious expression.
Nord-kun continued to struggle, but unfortunately, the difference in physical ability was too great. To me, Nord-kun’s strength felt weaker than a child’s tantrum.I could easily restrain him even while holding back.
Even as I was thinking about how absurd it was to have someone with such a name in this otherworld, I made sure not to let him go.
Then, at the moment it was confirmed who had arrived, a scream arose near me. Looking there, I saw Nord-kun, his face even paler.
“He’s here! He’s here!?”
He stopped struggling and instead clutched his head, trembling uncontrollably with an abnormal level of fear. Goodness, how terrifying is this Mr. Mura…
“Ah.”
Seeing his extreme fear, I suddenly remembered something. Could the Mura person in question be the young man who was aiming for Nord-kun’s background? I recalled him saying something like that, almost in tears, during a past communication. He had also mentioned coming to meet the parents then.
“Ah, so that’s what it is.”
“You know?”
Evia seemed to understand as well, nodding in realization upon hearing who it was. I had thought perhaps she had heard about it from Kaden-san and the others, but it seemed that wasn’t the case.
“The Mura family is, in a sense, a famous lineage.”
Apparently, that wasn’t it. Evia’s words, filled with implication, left me wondering how to proceed.
“What do you mean?”
While I was beginning to grasp the rough situation from Nord-kun’s panic, speculation and confirmation were two different things. I couldn’t just rely on conjecture. Under the guise of confirming my understanding, I decided to probe, half out of curiosity.
Evia stopped her thoughtful gesture, and with a wry smile, she began to organize her thoughts on how to explain the Mura family’s situation, pausing for a moment before speaking.
“…His family is unusual on this continent, as they fundamentally do not recognize inheritance based on blood ties. It’s a complete meritocracy, and most of the candidates for the head of the family are adopted.”
First, she explained the characteristics of the Mura family.
“Oh, what a peculiar family.”
Blood ties, in a sense, are a source of trust. It’s a trust earned through shared blood, which is why they pass things down to their descendants. There’s even a term like “bloodline principle,” highlighting the importance of blood. I understood that nobles, in particular, emphasize their family’s bloodline, but it seems oddities exist everywhere now. Inheritance based not on blood relatives, but on merit. In a way, it felt like a glimpse of the Demon Lord’s Army’s tendencies. That was my initial impression.
“As a result, his family’s capabilities are quite high. They are full of capable individuals with strong loyalty to the Demon Lord, and they have a good reputation. In terms of territory management, they are on the royal road, steady, and while they don’t achieve explosive profits, they have the skill to steadily improve things over time.”
And the meritocracy wasn’t just for show; the family was indeed highly capable. Had their method of maintaining the family been effective, or had they adjusted it to be so? Regardless, there must have been immense effort involved.
“Wow, so they are a prominent, well-known family. Are they high in status as well?”
A family like that would naturally become famous. However, given the flow of the conversation, I could sense it wasn’t just a matter of being an excellent family.
“Their family status is inferior to the Nordis family’s, but still, they are high enough that you could count down from the top.”
“I see.”
And with that, coupled with their impeccable family status, a more certain intuition whispered that there was something more. A high family status implies a long history, and within that history, I could anticipate something hidden. The fact that they weren’t newcomers who had rapidly risen to prominence further supported that expectation.
“And then?”
“And then what?”
“Don’t try to deceive me. From what Evia has told me, their family background seems fine, but that doesn’t explain Nord-kun’s level of fear. There’s a problem that I’m not aware of, isn’t there?”
A family that Evia praises must be impeccably capable. A lineage that appears flawless to the untrained eye, seemingly free from any misdeeds.
“Rather than a characteristic of the Mura family, it might be better to call it their sole drawback.”
However, the person Nord-kun is currently terrified of is a member of the Mura family. If he had done something wrong, it would be Nord-kun’s responsibility, but the atmosphere didn’t suggest that. If Nord-kun had indeed done something wrong, they wouldn’t have come to visit so politely. They would have come to condemn him more harshly. Since that wasn’t happening, and time was being allocated to handle the situation, there must be a corresponding reason.
As if acknowledging this as the correct answer, Evia gave a wry smile and began to explain why Nord-kun was so terrified.
“Well, it is a rather famous story.”
“Yes, well, in fact, it’s amazing that the family has managed to survive because of it.”
The Nordis family members exchanged expressions that words couldn’t quite capture. They looked troubled, as if to say, ‘If only this one thing were different.’ After contemplating whether to speak further, Evia let out a deep sigh.
“Their family is a homosexual lineage.”
“What?”
The words Evia reluctantly uttered caused me to exclaim in surprise. In aristocratic society, it wasn’t uncommon for sexual preferences to be… eccentric. However, hearing it directly was still startling. I often heard about nobility from Muil-san, but I hadn’t heard much about the Mura family specifically. It was partly due to their geographical distance from the Nordis territory, and our factions weren’t hostile but not allied either, so I had postponed any contact. And that family was a homosexual lineage…
“Does that mean the head of the family?”
Furthermore, it wasn’t just the head of the family, but the entire lineage. Humans cannot produce offspring with the same sex.
“No, the entire Mura family is homosexual. I told you. It’s a homosexual lineage.”
And that’s why I understood the adoption. They were homosexual through and through. That’s why they adopted to continue the family line.
“…So, it’s a family that gathers individuals who are fundamentally homosexual.”
“That’s what it amounts to. It’s even recognized by the commoners. In that territory, it’s almost unheard of for a man to walk alone at night.”
“To that extent?”
“To that extent. That family spares no effort in winning over whoever has captured their affection. I never expected my foolish younger brother to be so infatuated…”
Evia muttered, “This has become troublesome.”
“This is troubling.”
“Yes, it is troubling.”
And so, the Mura family presented a quandary for the Nordis family.
“No, but logically, shouldn’t they just refuse?”
It felt strange to speak of common sense in this situation, but wouldn’t it be a simple matter to say they don’t approve of same-sex marriage? Nord-kun vigorously nodded in agreement.
“No, it’s not a matter of refusing or accepting.”
“Meaning?”
“They are weighing the benefits gained by offering my foolish younger brother against familial affection.”
“Ah, so it’s that kind of issue.”
I never expected them to be troubled by a different kind of problem. Evia’s concern was about what could be called a political marriage.
“Political marriages are commonplace for nobles. While I am also a bit troubled by the same-sex aspect, considering Jiro-‘s future, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to form a connection with the Mura family at this juncture.”
“True. The issue of succession can be resolved if Evia-chan and Jiro-kun work hard, or if I do.”
“That’s a huge problem!! Are you okay with your son’s future being dyed in the color of roses?! Are you?! I understand political marriages are unavoidable, but I absolutely cannot accept this particular political marriage!! If that’s the case, I’d rather retreat to the countryside and live a farmer’s life!!”
“Do you think you can escape from the Mura family without the Nordis family’s backing?”
“It’s impossible!! It’s absolutely impossible!! Damn it!!!!”
It was a natural thought for nobles to seek to further develop their families by establishing connections between houses. However, the matter at hand was a same-sex marriage, completely disregarding the feelings of the individual involved. Evia wouldn’t offer Nord-kun solely based on a calculation of profit and loss.
“Except for the fact that they are homosexuals, that family is quite capable and exemplary. They value their people, and public order is good. In fact, they are known as lords beloved by their citizens. If they were just ordinary homosexual nobles, I would refuse. But they are so capable. As long as one overlooks their sexual preference, they are upright individuals. That’s why I’m troubled.”
Could this person truly be such an exemplary individual that Evia praised them so highly?
“I have met Lord Mura a few times. He deeply loves the boys he adopts and treats them all equally. His demeanor, both in public and private, reflects this. His stance as a benevolent ruler who loves his people is truly respectable. However, the sons he has raised by his side have all become homosexuals. I believe Nord would be happy if he were to marry into their family, but I find it difficult to accept my son becoming homosexual.”
And Kaden-san says there are no issues in terms of profit and relationships. The conditions are certainly not lacking in an opponent, but one single issue is holding them back completely. This is a condition where if only this one part could be resolved, it would be perfect.
“I’ve also attended one of the Mura family’s parties, and they were all wonderful children. Even though they are homosexual, they are chivalrous towards women, and they don’t seem to dislike women. It’s just that they genuinely like men, and if it weren’t for that, I would be willing to marry Nord-kun off to them…”
Homosexuality, this one aspect alone causes such deliberation for this family and person… I’m becoming a little interested.
“Um, your excellency. We shouldn’t keep our guests waiting any longer…”
The Nordis family was agonizing over this. Meanwhile, Nord-kun looked as sad as a cow before being sent to slaughter.
I wasn’t necessarily trying to save Nord-kun, who was dejected at being treated like a commodity, but the butler approached to request instructions.
“I understand…”
However, even Kaden-san, a seasoned noble, didn’t know how to respond.
“By the way, do you have an appointment?”
In noble interactions like these, it’s customary to give prior notice. Unlike some young man, who might show up unannounced and invite you to play baseball, it’s considered outside common courtesy.
“The thing is, we contacted Lord Nord, but he didn’t reply, so they came here directly.”
“…My foolish brother.”
“Yes!?”
“What about the reply to the letter?”
So, I thought if they had come unannounced, I could use that as an excuse to send them away this time…
“I haven’t written it.”
It seems that wasn’t an option either.
Today’s saying:
Don’t overlook what is convenient.
