Chapter 2: New Century (Epilogue)
Chapter 300: Retreat of the Undead
The magic cores provided to the players were from some mercenaries and adventurers in Karari City.
With the nation in crisis, they too did not hesitate to step onto the city walls. However, compared to the soldiers of Winter City, they felt their courage and bravery were worthless.
“Mage masters, using too many of these magic cores isn’t good…”
They tried to reason with the mages, but those with lower ranks paid no heed. Instead, they became aggressive:
“You said they were free to use, right? Now you want money? Let me be clear, we have no money to give, only our lives.”
After saying that, the mage absorbed the blended magic from another magic core. Their movements were so swift, as if they feared the hunters would snatch the cores away.
The hunters looked at each other, their lips twitching slightly, but their hearts were filled with admiration and gratitude.
“It’s truly unbelievable. None of these mages will stop here in their future achievements, yet they are so recklessly using magic cores to replenish their magic to defend the city walls…”
There was no mage in this world who would disregard their future so carelessly.
Now, they had witnessed it.
Since the mage masters had said so, they could only comply with the mages’ needs.
Immediately, boxes of magic cores were carried onto the city walls. Although these magic cores were not of high grade, their sheer quantity was overwhelming…
Furthermore, the lower the grade of the magic core, the greater the damage to the mage’s Magic Core.
The battle on the city walls gradually reached a stalemate.
Or rather, the scales of victory were tipping towards humanity.
The players held their ground without retreating, even using themselves as brutal human bombs to clash head-on with the undead without regard for cost. From time to time, Champion Knights would descend from the walls to reap lives.
Angus, hidden within the Deathly Shadow Cloud, gradually sensed that something was amiss.
He had estimated the strength of the Karari Royal Capital based on the average level of the surrounding five cities.
According to his predictions, Karari City should have fallen within half an hour. However, it was almost dawn, and not only had the city wall not been breached, but the undead were showing signs of being suppressed by the human garrison.
“There isn’t much necromantic energy left…”
Angus turned to look at the large, pale green crystal floating beside him within the Deathly Shadow Cloud. The once brightly shining crystal had become somewhat dim.
This was the necromantic energy he had collected by slaughtering five cities recently. As long as a living being died, the necromantic energy released at death would be absorbed by this crystal. But now, the energy in the crystal was dwindling.
This indicated that most of the casualties on the battlefield were undead. Each resurrection of an undead consumed this necromantic energy, while perhaps very few humans had even died.
But the humans were clearly self-detonating!
Gazing towards the city walls, he heard the explosions of Magic Sources from time to time. Angus’s expression grew increasingly grim.
A sliver of dawn had appeared on the horizon. The combat effectiveness of the undead would drastically decrease in sunlight, making further fighting pointless.
Angus was already contemplating a retreat.
He needed to understand what was going on with the humans before he could launch another attack. Moreover, he needed to find a place to slaughter some living beings to replenish his necromantic energy.
“Stop the attack.”
Angus’s command was conveyed through a blood raven to the ears of the suffering priest, Sivanah. Sivanah cast a resentful gaze at the Deathly Shadow Cloud behind her, then let out a chilling scream from her mouth.
“Ah—!”
The sound wave spread outwards like a tide, and all the undead froze in their tracks. Only the Undead Ghost Fire in their eye sockets continued to flicker in the wind.
The players on the city walls were stunned by this scene.
To be honest, the battlefield, which had been noisy a moment ago, with the surging tide of undead suddenly coming to a standstill after a single scream, was a truly magnificent sight.
“What’s wrong with these undead? Are they playing freeze tag?”
“This is a bit unsettling… I feel like it’s better when they’re moving. Otherwise, I keep getting the creeps…”
…
After a brief silence, the undead began to move again. However, they were not charging forward but retreating step by step, even collapsing into piles of碎骨 and sinking into the ground.
“They… they’re retreating!”
“Holy crap! The undead are running away!”
“Brothers, don’t let them escape! These are experience points!”
Upon hearing the term “experience points,” the players instantly lost their composure. Their hesitant gazes towards the undead now filled with aggression, like monstrously muscled men encountering a loli in a dark alley.
Their eyes, filled with ferocity and greed, were even more sinister than those of the undead, three parts more so.
“Charge!” Someone shouted.
As if a chain reaction had been triggered, the players, with excited cries, rushed down the city walls. The undead’s retreat quickened, some turning into smoke, some sinking into the earth, and some disappearing into the shadows. Many players missed their targets.
This frenzied scene also caught Angus’s eye. He noticed this group of unusual humans, considering how the pursuit of undead by humans had never happened before from ancient times to the present.
Today, Angus had truly seen something.
This was practically a provocation to the undead!
What kind of powerful beings were in the royal city of Karari remained unknown, and Angus dared not act rashly.
The powerful individuals on the other side also seemed to be wary of him and were not easily revealing themselves. But if he didn’t kill these human soldiers who were chasing after them, how could Angus, the leader of the Undead Ghost Dragon, continue to hold his position?
He might as well just go home and sleep, and perhaps even the Undead Emperor might dismantle his bones and make them into cushions!
Angus revealed half of his head from the pitch-black Deathly Shadow Cloud. But his massive dragon head and his searchlight-like, pale blue eyes were immediately discovered by the players.
“6.”
“Holy crap! What a huge head!”
“This body size is at least ten times that of Conne. The Desert Dragon is like a chick compared to this Ghost Dragon…”
Players had always had a strong interest in dragon-like creatures. Dragons, after all, were Legendary-grade creatures. Whether in the game world or in their own hometowns, dragons were symbols of strength and power.
So, after the initial shock, the players became excited and started discussing among themselves.
Some of the more reckless ones even charged directly towards the Undead Ghost Dragon hidden within the Deathly Shadow Cloud.
“This is too cool! It would be a huge loss not to take a picture with this!”
“Holy crap, a Legendary-grade BOSS, a nightmare threat. King of Winter… doesn’t seem like he can win…”
Angus looked on in astonishment at the human soldiers fearlessly charging towards him.
For a moment, he wondered if he hadn’t revealed his true form…
Otherwise, why would these humans be unafraid of his draconic might and terrifying appearance and size?
