Chapter 39: Shoot the Goat and Kill it with One Arrow!
Xing held the bow and arrow.
She followed Lin Ye on the path to check the traps.
It was Xing’s first time going out with a bow and arrow, and she wanted to shoot at anything that moved.
Lin Ye regretted bringing her along because Xing kept startling him with every rustle of leaves.
Along the way, Lin Ye taught Xing how to set up two more snare traps.
Then they arrived at the trap they had dug before.
Unfortunately, they still came up empty-handed today.
However, on their way back, Lin Ye’s snares from the previous day had caught two animals that looked very much like chickens.
These two chickens were larger than Earth chickens, and their feet were particularly thick and strong.
“Wow, they’re Big-footed Chickens! Their meat is so delicious, fragrant, and sweet,” Xing said happily upon seeing the caught chickens.
Lin Ye tied the two chickens together with a vine, then slung them over his shoulder using the ox horns, and continued walking.
As they passed the area where they had found mushrooms scattered everywhere before, they spotted an animal that was bowing its head and eating mushrooms.
Lin Ye looked at the animal; it strongly resembled a goat from Earth.
Apart from being twice the size, there were no other significant differences.
Upon seeing the goat, they stopped and hid behind a tree.
The goat was engrossed in eating mushrooms.
Xing looked at Lin Ye with eager eyes, as if asking if she could shoot it with her bow and arrow.
Lin Ye nodded gently, indicating that she could try.
Seeing Lin Ye’s agreement, Xing’s face flushed with excitement.
After taking a few deep breaths, Xing stood in position, nocked an arrow, and aimed at the goat eating mushrooms on the ground.
Then, she gently released the bowstring. The arrow whizzed through the air and lodged itself in the goat’s backside.
The goat, hit in the rear, let out a cry and bolted away.
Xing, seeing that she had hit it — even though she had aimed for the head and hit the rear — was thrilled with her first combat experience.
Just as she was about to cheer, she saw the goat sprinting wildly.
Before she could celebrate, Xing quickly gave chase.
Lin Ye followed closely behind.
The goat, with an arrow stuck in its rear, had difficulty running, limping as it fled.
After closing the distance slightly, Xing drew her bow again, aimed, and shot.
However, it was Xing’s first time shooting at a moving target, and as expected, she missed.
She continued to chase and shoot again, missing once more.
After chasing for more than half an hour, the goat suddenly stopped running and turned to face Xing.
Lin Ye saw the goat turn around and realized it was no longer trying to escape but was preparing to counter-attack.
Lin Ye shook his head as he observed Xing’s archery skills throughout their pursuit.
Xing was already the strongest among all the Beast-eared Girls and the best at practicing archery.
Yet, she couldn’t even hit a goat that was only running in a straight line.
The other Beast-eared Girls would be even worse.
It seemed the Beast-eared Girls still needed much more practice.
Lin Ye walked up to Xing and took the bow and arrow from her.
The goat facing them was lowering its head, horns pointed towards them, and pawing the ground restlessly.
Lin Ye nocked an arrow and aimed at the goat.
At this moment, the goat sensed the danger and charged towards Lin Ye.
Xing saw the goat charging at Lin Ye with its sharp horns and nervously covered her mouth.
Lin Ye, however, remained unfazed as the goat charged at him.
His hands held the bow and arrow steadily as he took a deep breath.
Knowledge about archery automatically surfaced in his mind.
To shoot an arrow, one must first learn to make arrows. While acquiring the arrow-making craft from the System, Lin Ye had also mastered archery techniques.
He had only shot at static targets before. Now that he encountered a moving target, Lin Ye wanted to take this opportunity to test his archery skills in actual combat!
As Lin Ye slowly exhaled, he released the bowstring precisely as he breathed out.
“Whoosh—!”
The arrow whistled through the air and shot forward!
In the blink of an eye, the arrow flew straight into the goat’s eye.
The goat, hit in the eye, continued its charge for a few more steps before collapsing to the ground.
The powerful momentum caused the goat to slide forward after falling until it stopped right at Lin Ye’s feet.
At this moment, Lin Ye maintained his shooting posture, his breath fully exhaled.
From the moment Lin Ye aimed until the arrow was released, apart from his fingers releasing the bowstring, his entire body remained completely still.
Xing witnessed the entire scene.
Her mouth remained agape in shock for a long time.
She herself had shot at the goat several times, and had only hit it the first time when it was stationary, and even then, she had missed the mark.
Xing stepped forward and examined the goat that Lin Ye had killed.
Lin Ye’s arrow had precisely struck the goat’s eye, piercing directly into its brain.
Xing looked at Lin Ye with adoration.
In the past, Xing hadn’t understood what Lin Ye did, so she had merely thought he was amazing.
But now that she had learned archery yesterday and tried it herself, seeing Lin Ye’s shot filled her with awe.
This wasn’t just amazing; it was practically divine!
Lin Ye’s figure now loomed incredibly large in Xing’s heart.
Lin Ye returned the bow to Xing and handed her the ox horns and the two Big-footed Chickens.
Then, Lin Ye grabbed the goat’s front and hind legs with both hands and slung it over his shoulder.
With a nod towards Xing, they began their journey back to the tribe.
