22. [Magic Immunity]
“Go, little one! Do as you please!”
With a wave of her hand, Evelyn summoned the magical beast Acheron, which instantly pounced on the evil beast. In a mere moment, the evil beast, which was about the size of an adult wild wolf, had its neck bitten through and was carried off like a kite with its string cut.
“Damn it!”
The Black-robed Man silently cursed, turning to flee, but as he turned, a dark gun barrel was already pressed against his head.
“You, when did you…”
Beans of sweat rolled down from the Black-robed Man’s forehead. Just moments ago, Evelyn had been in front of him commanding Acheron to kill his synthesized beast, so why was she suddenly behind him?
“Fool! How could two-legged ones be faster than someone with wings?”
Evelyn scoffed, rolling her eyes. They weren’t far apart; with a gentle flap of her wings, she could easily leap behind him.
“But I’m quite curious, you just mentioned wanting my body and soul, right? That means you must be the real culprit behind the recent string of incidents, correct? How could someone as weak as you defeat an entire Elf envoy, especially with a high-level elf among them?”
Evelyn squinted her eyes slightly. She didn’t believe that this person in front of her could accomplish such a feat. The most likely scenario was that he was just a pawn, and the true mastermind was someone else.
She needed to use this guy to lure out the big fish hiding in the shadows.
“Hehe, you’ll find out.”
To her surprise, the Black-robed Man let out a strange, light laugh. He suddenly reached out his hand and grabbed the gun barrel that was pressed against his forehead! Instead of moving the barrel away, he pressed it harder against his head, his eyes hidden beneath the cloak radiating an unprecedented fervor and madness.
“What… ugh!”
Before Evelyn could understand what he was thinking, the wall of the alley behind her was suddenly shattered. A powerful impact struck her side from below, sending the unsuspecting Evelyn flying, and her shotgun slipped from her grasp.
“Roar!!!!”
A low, hoarse roar echoed from the broken section of the alley. It seemed mixed with some other bizarre sounds, both whimpering and low mocking laughter. Various small sounds intertwined, making it exceptionally eerie and terrifying.
“What… is that…?”
Evelyn struggled to prop herself up, her eyes filled with shock as she looked at the wall. A thick arm protruded from behind the wall, and then the “thing” hidden behind the gap suddenly pushed most of its body out. Above it—if that organ could be considered a head—was a pair of murky, blood-red eyes fixed on the immobile Evelyn lying on the ground.
It was a monster composed of countless corpses, nearly five meters tall, made up of inferior remnants from many different races. The most horrifying part was that the decaying corpses that made up its body were still in a special state of activity: arms with rotting skin shivered, eyeballs hanging by some fibers still moved, and mouths from unknown races emitted pained wails! Countless corpse organs were haphazardly connected, creating the most terrifying monster in existence!
“Ugh… it hurts!”
Evelyn gritted her teeth, trying to stand up, but the intense pain in her legs caused her to fall back down.
Looking at her injured right leg, she saw a gruesome wound deep enough to expose bone, and her ankle was slightly swollen, likely from a sprain.
In addition, her forearm, elbow, and wings were all covered in various wounds, making her appear quite battered.
“Tsk, this is bad, if this continues…”
Evelyn clenched her jaw. As a demon, her self-healing ability far surpassed that of humans, and even without treatment, her injuries would recover. However, the damage to her calf was too severe; it would likely take some time before she could regain her mobility.
In front of her, the massive creature that had ambushed her was now fully stepping out of the alleyway, completely revealing itself, slowly advancing towards Evelyn.
If she didn’t escape in time…
“Acheron!”
Evelyn shouted, and the Hell Beast Acheron immediately lunged forward, its massive and heavy body blocking Evelyn. Beneath its dark scales, a faint red light began to glow. In the next moment, Acheron let out a roar, and a blazing fireball shot towards the massive corpse monster.
Acheron was a magical beast from hell, so even though it was one of the most common and lowest-level creatures in hell, the flames it spewed could still burn souls.
And hellfire was the natural enemy of all life in the world, capable of incinerating any being that came into contact with it.
That should have been the case.
When the deathly flames struck the corpse monster head-on, they did not ignite as Evelyn had expected. Instead, it seemed to meet some non-flammable substance, only flickering for a moment before extinguishing, leaving only a small charred mark on the monster’s arm.
Evelyn instantly understood why. She also finally realized why the elf envoy was utterly defeated despite the presence of a high-level elf.
This corpse monster had the trait of [Magic Immunity].
[Magic Immunity], the full name being [Magic Effect Immunity], is an extremely rare innate trait, almost a natural enemy attribute for most magical beings.
[Magic Immunity] cannot completely nullify magic; just like how Acheron’s attack still left a mark on the monster, it only reduces the power of magic. But the terrifying part is that a strong [Magic Immunity] can reduce magical power by as much as ninety percent. Unless it’s a forbidden spell that exceeds magic or some extremely special [extra magic], any magic striking this monster would be like Acheron’s fireball, reduced to merely a tickle.
What an unexpectedly troublesome opponent.
But just as Evelyn had previously stated, the number of trump cards she had in her hand far exceeded what the Black-robed Man could imagine, and defeating a corpse monster with [Magic Immunity] was not an impossible feat.
But the problem was…
