38. The Night Watchman Mr. Attempting to Lure the Pure Little Demon
The Night Watchman turned his eyes around as if he had spotted some rare treasure, grinning and extending an olive branch to Evelyn, looking like a bad uncle trying to lure a pure little girl.
The profession of “Night Watchman” is one of the most needed in the world, as among the human race, those with the talent to learn magic are already rare, and those who possess the natural talent to master magic without any guidance are even scarcer. Even with a global population nearing eight billion, according to Evelyn’s estimation, there might only be a handful of people with such exceptional talent.
Therefore, whether it’s the Night Watchman or the Church, when they find someone with this talent, they will rush to extend an olive branch.
However… joining the Night Watchman is, of course, out of the question for Evelyn~
What kind of demon would join a human magic organization?
“I’m sorry, Night Watchman, but I’m just an ordinary high school girl. I dabbled in magic out of interest and don’t wish to get too involved with your affairs.”
Evelyn donned a professional smile and politely declined the Night Watchman’s request. The Night Watchman appeared a bit awkward upon hearing this, opening his mouth as if wanting to say something further.
No need to overthink it; he was surely about to mention various perks or benefits, but those would be meaningless to Evelyn. If she genuinely wanted to enjoy a carefree life, all she needed to do was return to Hell—why would she need to join them?
Nevertheless, there was a slight advantage in joining the Night Watchman for Evelyn: she could leverage the Night Watchman’s system to more easily identify her future targets for justice.
But considering the risks of joining the Night Watchman… that small benefit seemed quite negligible.
Therefore—no matter what perks or temptations this guy presented, Evelyn’s answer would only be one! That is—no way.
“Mr. Night Watchman, are you getting a bit off-topic? Since you already know my family Fufu’s identity, I’m sure we can begin now?”
Surprisingly, just as the Night Watchman was about to say something to tempt Evelyn into joining, Emilia beside her couldn’t sit still. She smiled and tapped the table, her sharp gaze seemingly warning the Night Watchman to stop, not to try and steal the deal right under her nose.
“Ah, yes, I did get a bit off track… I apologize for my impulsive behavior to the two esteemed ladies.”
The Night Watchman awkwardly coughed twice, appearing somewhat uncomfortable under Emilia’s slightly “kind” gaze. He seemed fidgety, looking rather constrained, and even specifically apologized to both Emilia and Evelyn.
Thinking about it, the Night Watchmen merely knew that Emilia was a pure angel, and no one could tell an angel’s age by appearance, so it was normal for them to act somewhat reserved or respectful considering they couldn’t discern whether Emilia was a young angel or an elderly one who had lived for many years.
And the little farce before the conversation should come to an end; what followed were matters for adults.
“Miss Emilia, last night, one of our patrolling colleagues discovered a… no, rather, a giant monster’s remains made from multiple corpses in an old alley within twenty kilometers of where we currently are. We found some blood traces and signs of a struggle nearby. Based on the residual traces at the scene, we found that the giant monster was thoroughly defeated by a remarkably powerful holy attribute magic. Furthermore, upon contacting the Holy Church, we learned that it was not their clergy’s doing, so I wish to inquire whether that magic was related to you?”
The Night Watchman changed from his earlier joking demeanor to a serious tone for formal work. His eyes were keenly focused on Emilia, yet there was no hint of scrutiny or questioning; clearly, he was not interrogating Emilia but merely seeking a response.
“That was my doing.”
Emilia readily admitted, while Evelyn lounged on the sofa lazily, curiously observing her and the Night Watchman. Her adorable little feet wrapped in white lace stockings swung back and forth restlessly, looking exceedingly cute and tempting.
“Here’s the thing: after we dismantled and examined that giant monster’s remains, we were astonished to find that the incomplete corpses that made up the monster all came from the victims of the recent string of homicides or those who went missing in connection to the case. Therefore, we have reason to suspect that the one who created that corpse monster is indeed the true culprit behind this case! Miss Emilia, you formally informed us last night about the fifth victim and the incident location, so you must be quite concerned about this case. In order to swiftly identify the perpetrator, we hope you can tell us exactly what happened last night, if you don’t mind?”
The Night Watchman’s phrasing was extremely sincere and quite earnest. He likely had prior knowledge of the angels’ proud nature, so he kept his demeanor as low-key as possible during the conversation and in making his request, ensuring he did not come off as too aggressive—a commendable effort, clearly demonstrating he had done his homework.
However, Emilia was not a proud angel, and even if the Night Watchmen had not come to her, she would still personally visit the Worry-Free City Night Watchman headquarters by tomorrow at the latest. Therefore, Emilia shared everything she witnessed with the Night Watchman in front of her, of course, omitting any information regarding Evelyn.
She was well aware of the poor relationship between demons and humans, and she would not carelessly betray such an adorable little roommate (cushion).
“I see… Thank you for the information, Miss Emilia. You are the kindest and most approachable angel I have ever met! From now on, feel free to reach out to us Night Watchmen for any requests; as long as it is within our capability, we will surely lend our full support! Now, I will take my leave for today, but if you need anything, you can always call me.”
The Night Watchman stood up and earnestly expressed his gratitude to Emilia. The information Emilia provided regarding the blood drops and the Black-robed Man was crucial, and he needed to report back to the department immediately. After giving his contact information to Emilia, he hurriedly prepared to leave.
“Oh, right! We also unexpectedly obtained some information that you should find interesting, Miss Emilia.”
Suddenly, he seemed to remember something and turned back.
“What is it?”
Emilia asked, puzzled.
“It’s regarding… the demon lurking in our city.”
