41. Gabrielle
“Hah—so tired, I really don’t understand what’s so important about a blood sample…”
In the dead of night, several dozen meters underground at the Night Watchman division in Worry-Free City, a black-clad Night Watchman was yawning out of boredom, while behind him stood a storage room filled with numerous precious organizational samples.
“Sigh, after all, the few samples delivered this time are quite special! Besides that demon’s blood sample, there’s also a bunch of rotten remains that can’t be identified by the naked eye; the Elf Clan has been pushing harder and harder. The higher-ups must be busier than ever now, right?”
Opposite this Night Watchman sat another man who also sighed helplessly. He casually took out two cigarettes from his pocket, put one in his mouth, and handed the other to his colleague across from him.
“Want one?”
“Need a light.”
Just like that, the two Night Watchmen forced to work overtime sat at the doorway of the storage room and smoked, their originally furrowed brows gradually relaxing with each puff of smoke, as if the nicotine they exhaled took their worries along with it.
Normally, no one would specifically guard the storage room, but as the Night Watchman who offered a cigarette said, these samples were the only hope for the Night Watchmen to solve the case as quickly as possible, and they could not afford any mistakes.
Therefore, this afternoon, the Night Watchman division held a lottery to determine who would be the unlucky one responsible for acting as security at the storage room entrance that night. Clearly, the two currently on duty were not lucky; with less than a one percent chance, it happened to land on them.
“What important samples? It’s just that Miss Devil is afraid of discovering her blood here and sneaking in to destroy it, right? If you ask me, the leadership is really making a fuss; there was no need to catch her at all. How many troubles has she helped us handle? The whole city’s crime rate has decreased because of her; if it gets destroyed, so be it.”
“You can’t say that, buddy. That demon girl did kill people, even if they were bastards that we hated too. The nature of her actions doesn’t change. But of course, we’ve always turned a blind eye to her, haven’t we? Last time, that Rich Young Master’s father tried to stir up trouble and ended up getting taught a lesson by us, didn’t he?”
“Hey, that’s true…”
“But I really want to meet her. Earlier, at my son’s school, there were tons of little bastards forming cliques to bully classmates. I’ve wanted to teach them a lesson for a long time! But due to restrictions as Night Watchmen, I couldn’t take action. Thankfully, she later went and dealt with those little punks several times, scaring them to death. I was so pleased when I found out!”
“Realistically, the ones who really want to capture her should be the people from the Church, right?”
“Exactly! A bunch of useless priests, and they want to take that demon’s blood sample from us this time! Talk about being shameless!”
The two Night Watchmen chatted back and forth, smoking one cigarette after another. Suddenly, one of the Night Watchmen glanced sideways unconsciously, and his expression instantly turned sharp as he bit down on the cigarette and stood up, walking toward a corner of the corridor.
“What’s wrong, buddy? Is something up?”
“I remember that when we got here, the trash can should’ve been at the corner, right? When did it move here?”
The Night Watchman who noticed something was off crouched down to look at the trash can that had fallen to the ground at some point. This trash can had always been placed at the corner of the corridor, generally blocking the path of passersby. But since there usually weren’t people returning this way, no one managed it. When they came over tonight, this Night Watchman had even specifically paid attention to the trash can and seemingly kicked it to the center of the path. But now it had clearly been moved, which indicated…
“Not good, there’s…”
Before the Night Watchman could shout, a shadow silently appeared behind him and swiftly knocked him unconscious with a swift strike. The other on-duty Night Watchman’s face changed dramatically at this sight; the red magic circle in his hand immediately lit up, but the next moment, a dark feather that seemed to emanate with boundless curses and darkness slowly descended in front of his eyes.
“My niece said, try not to take any lives; just take a nap for now.”
Lucifer’s figure suddenly flashed to the back of the Night Watchman, and in the next moment, endless darkness instantly enveloped the Night Watchman who was prepared to resist. With the sound of a heavy thud hitting the ground, Lucifer effortlessly broke into the storage room deep within the Night Watchman base.
“Blood sample… found it.”
As soon as he entered the storage room, Lucifer’s deep eyes lit up slightly as he quickly spotted the blood sample marked with the word “Demon.” He walked straight to the deepest part of the storage room, ignoring the rotten remains scattered on the ground, and accurately locked onto the test tube he was looking for among a pile of them.
“With this, Little Eve should be at ease.”
Just as Lucifer was about to casually destroy the blood sample and test tube in his hand, he suddenly raised an eyebrow, looking curiously at the blood sample.
“This is…”
Lucifer pulled out the stopper from the top of the test tube and brought it to his nose for a gentle sniff, his forehead furrowing even more tightly.
“Pig’s blood.”
Lucifer let out a cold snort and casually threw the test tube to the ground like trash. The glass test tube shattered almost instantly, and the “demon” blood stored within splattered everywhere.
“Seems someone got ahead of me…”
“But I’m quite curious, why would you do something like this?”
“Gabrielle?”
As Lucifer’s voice fell, a holy pure white light burst forth in front of him, and as three wings symbolizing holiness and purity slowly unfolded from the light, a small, sweet, adorable blonde angel girl appeared before Lucifer, sucking on a lollipop.
The young girl looked like a star fallen from the sky, beautiful and dazzling; although her body currently appeared a bit frail, and her height certainly fell far short of an adult, just based on her stunningly cute face, one could tell that she would grow up to be a breathtaking beauty.
But Lucifer knew very well that this girl would never have the chance to grow up.
She had remained just as she was for millions of years.
The Seraph with six wings, the guardian of Heaven—Gabrielle.
