46. There are a total of nine of these XX…
Looking at the old alley walls covered with ivy, Emilia’s gaze gradually became sharp. A flash of golden light in her delicate hand, and a cross longsword made of light instantly appeared in her grasp.
The navigation showed that she was nearly a hundred kilometers away from the old town where her home was located; it was impossible for her to have simply lost her way.
Who gets lost for over a hundred kilometers? She isn’t some ultimate road idiot.
“Oh? It seems you’ve discovered it, noble Angel Miss?”
Suddenly, a voice that Emilia found somewhat familiar rang out from above her at an angle. Emilia narrowed her eyes, and with a swift motion, the longsword in her hand slashed towards the source of the voice. A crescent-shaped golden sword qi instantly shot out, slicing a nearly one-meter-wide opening in the alley.
“Damn! It seems Angel Miss, you’re more anxious than I am! That’s just fine; I can’t wait to claim your corpse and soul!”
The somewhat disheveled figure of the Black-robed Man appeared before Emilia, part of his cloak on his right arm cut away by some sharp object. It was clear that he had been preparing to deliver his opening lines while leaning against the alley wall, only to have Emilia’s swift attack nearly sever his right arm.
“Come on! Blessed by the Deity, the Corpse Taker! It’s time to serve the Deity! Defeat this detestable traitor (Angel) in front of you! Offer her body and soul to Him!!!”
As the Black-robed Man raised his arms frantically, a giant hand composed of countless biological remains, covered with strange blood patterns, suddenly erupted from the ground at Emilia’s feet. The severed limbs on the giant hand danced grotesquely as decaying, and even some barely remaining bony arms, lunged toward Emilia’s ankles.
“Defeated subordinates can only sneak attack?”
Initially, Evelyn had been injured by a stealth attack from the hidden Corpse Taker behind the wall, so as soon as Emilia saw the Black-robed Man, she was already prepared to face attacks coming from all directions. Her angel wings instantly spread open from her waist, and her pure white, flawless wings flapped rapidly, lifting her into the air before the disgusting severed limbs could capture her.
“Roar, roar, roar, roar—”
The Corpse Taker then burst forth from the ground. Emilia keenly noticed that this Corpse Taker was obviously different from the one she had previously slain—this one was covered with strange crimson patterns, and its size was clearly much larger.
However, since it was a Corpse Taker, its nature of Magic Immunity should still apply, so engaging in close combat to find a chance to use her counterattack gauntlet to slay it should work just fine, like last time.
Just as Emilia prepared to charge towards the Corpse Taker, a fierce red light suddenly flared up, and roaring flames shot straight at Emilia. Shocked, she couldn’t dodge in time, and could only shield herself with her wings and the longsword in hand, taking the brunt of the blazing flames head-on.
“Ugh!”
The pain from her scorched wings flooded in, and Emilia instantly felt all her energy drain away, forcing her to drop from the sky. At this moment, her keen reflexes came into play. She adjusted her body in the air, using her fall to lessen the impact, and succeeded in creating some distance from the Corpse Taker; however, despite that, she still sustained some scrapes.
“How is that possible… magic?”
Emilia lifted her head, her eyes filled with disbelief as she looked at the Corpse Taker. There was no way she could be mistaken; the flame that had just attacked her was indeed an instant-cast third-tier fire magic—Crimson Flame.
Although this magic didn’t deal high damage, its range and impact were incredibly strong, usually used by magicians to repel attackers when suddenly ambushed. But even so, it was genuine magic!
The use of magic required not only magic power but also the construction of related magic circuits and magic circles, which meant that any creature employing magic needed at least the most basic level of intelligence. Yet the Corpse Taker before her… this puppet built from human remains… couldn’t possibly possess the basic intelligence necessary, let alone the most fundamental magic power required to cast magic; those ordinary human corpses couldn’t have any!
“Heh, surprised, are you, Angel Miss? That’s right, this Corpse Taker is different from the one you previously slayed; it contains noble bloodlines within! So, Angel Miss, if you surrender obediently, I might just allow you to keep your whole body to meet the Deity; otherwise, I can’t guarantee that your beautiful face won’t get hurt in the battle~”
The Black-robed Man’s voice was filled with arrogance, and he feigned a look of regret as he extended his hand towards Emilia. In response, Emilia disdainfully scoffed, propping herself up with the longsword and pointing the blade at the massive seven-meter-tall Corpse Taker not far away, speaking in an indifferent tone.
“It’s just the most basic of magic. Do you really think you can defeat an angel just by catching us off guard? That trick may work on my dull compatriots, but not on me… hehe.”
“Indeed, a Corpse Taker that can use magic will never defeat someone like you who possesses Gabrielle’s counterattack miracle, right? But I’m sorry, I’m just a brute, and when faced with such a situation, I can only slightly… increase the quantity.”
Increase the quantity?
What does that mean?
A sense of danger inexplicably rose within Emilia, and she instinctively took a step back. The next moment, as the ground shook violently, the ominous feeling in her heart instantly turned into reality.
“Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!”
Eight giant Corpse Takers adorned with blood patterns suddenly erupted from the ground without warning, their massive bodies instantly bursting through the alley walls. Their pairs of scarlet, savage eyes fixed dead on the dazed Emilia. In an instant, the entire alley was filled with the rotting stench that uniquely belonged to corpses.
“I’ve created a total of nine of these Corpse Takers! How about it, Angel Miss? This is all a grand gift prepared just for you!!!”
Standing on the shoulder of one of the Corpse Takers, the Black-robed Man began to laugh arrogantly. Faced with such a situation, even Emilia, who was extremely skilled in combat among angels, felt tense. The counterattack gauntlet miracle couldn’t be used casually, and against such a number of Corpse Takers, even she could only apply oil to her feet and flee.
However, at the same time, she felt an anger rising at the number of Corpse Takers.
But the ordinary Corpse Taker from last time had at least been made up of limbs from more than ten different people.
And now, with so many larger Corpse Takers…
How many people did this bastard have to kill to create them!?
Damn scum!!!
