Where there is light, there will be shadows. People yearn for light and hope, despising dirty shadows and darkness, just as they are close to the angels in the high heavens and hate demons that symbolize hell.
And where there is light, there will be faith. Where there is faith, religions are formed. The Holy Church, a religion that has left a significant mark on both human orthodox history and the history of magic, aligns its beliefs with angels. They call themselves the agents of the Lord on Earth and were once the religion with the most followers in human history.
However, as the gears of time transitioned into the modern age, atheistic views were increasingly accepted by humanity, and the influence of the Church waned. Words such as God, angels, and deities became topics of jokes during meals. Even the duties the Church originally held in contacting other races were largely taken over by a newly emerging organization known as the Night Watchmen.
The gradual decline of the Church also gave rise to various other religions worldwide, among which are ancient religions with long histories from other regions, as well as heart-stirring and sinister cults.
To the Holy Church, most of these cults are merely grasshoppers hopping along a thin line, unworthy of their attention, and can simply be handled by worldly mechanisms or those meddlesome Night Watchmen.
As for why “most,” it is because among these so-called cults, there is one organization whose danger level is deemed no less than that of demons in the eyes of the Church.
No, they are even more dangerous than demons.
Because, unlike those self-proclaimed religions claiming to be under the protection of deities, those people have truly come into contact with the dark gods.
They call themselves — the Descendants Sect.
