Chapter 101: Cold Blood Potion
“It hurts, it hurts! I knew I shouldn’t have maxed out the physical pain sensitivity!”
Bailu fell onto the muddy ground, sewage washing over her body. Fortunately, the Instant Spell Shield on her absorbed most of the damage; otherwise, this fall would have almost sent her to the resurrection match.
She struggled to get up and glanced at her remaining Life, which was only 14%.
“Is this what a Mage is like? Truly noble.”
Clutching the Ebony Staff in her hand, she forced herself to focus on the hateful attacker.
“What… is that thing?”
The opponent stood in the rainy night, appearing human in form, but the aura emanating from him was utterly inhuman. His pupils reflected a glow in the darkness, filled with beast-like greed and cruelty, a faint, low growl issuing from his throat.
Was this guy really human? Bailu found it hard to believe.
“That’s a side effect of ‘Cold Blood’… or rather, its true purpose.”
An unexpected voice suddenly came from above.
Bailu didn’t want to be distracted at this moment, but she was too curious about who was speaking and what “Cold Blood” was.
So, while wary of the enemy, she tilted her head up slightly. Under the cover of night, Bailu could barely make out the other person’s figure.
It was someone completely covered by a wide cloak, shimmering with a faint emerald glow, reminiscent of a sky full of starlight. Due to the cloak’s concealment and her viewing angle, Bailu found it difficult to determine the person’s build. But none of that mattered. What surprised Bailu the most was that the person was floating in mid-air with no visible support, as if it were a game bug.
Seemingly sensing her gaze, the person moved, turning their attention towards her.
Even with the double layer of night and rain, those amber eyes, devoid of any emotional fluctuation, stared directly at Bailu.
In that instant, the patter of rain, the beasts’ low growls, her pounding heart, and the entire clamor and noise of Leicester seemed to cease.
“You look quite disheveled.”
The person spoke.
In fact, thanks to the flight ability of the Emerald Star Cloak in Witch Form, Li Wen had been observing all the events unfolding below.
Including the wanted criminal luring Bailu away to fight, Bailu’s pursuit, and the subsequent slaughter… Li Wen had remained indifferent and unmoved even when Bailu was ambushed and nearly killed by the wanted criminal.
It could only be said that this future Head of Logistics for the Strategy Team was currently a bit of a weakling in terms of actual combat ability. To be almost killed by someone who had taken a potion and wasn’t even a Transcendent, and who had even held back, was quite something.
Although the ambush was the main factor, this incident could still be considered a “dark history” for the Head of Logistics, which explained why Li Wen had never heard Bailu mention it.
“You must really want to know what ‘Cold Blood’ is, and who I am?”
Bailu nodded repeatedly, not even bothering with the enemy in front of her at this moment.
As expected, even in a new world, this Head of Logistics was the same one Li Wen knew.
“‘Cold Blood’ is a potion with strong hallucinogenic and addictive properties. Ordinary people who take it become deeply stimulated and find it difficult to break free. The Wolf Pack Club dilutes these potions and then sells them to heavily addicted junkies, down-on-their-luck artists desperately seeking inspiration, and impoverished individuals needing to numb themselves…”
Li Wen patiently explained to Bailu.
“But this potion has a side effect that is difficult to conceal: once an overdose of the diluted potion is consumed, one might lose their sanity, becoming ferocious like a beast, gaining immense strength, agility, and surpassing normal physical capabilities. Or perhaps, this is the original effect of the ‘Cold Blood’ potion, and addiction and hallucination are merely the side effects.”
Bailu had already experienced the immense strength, agility, and the beast-like feeling, so she couldn’t deny it.
“You… you mean this guy… might be an addict?”
After a moment of silence, Bailu asked haltingly.
“If you want to put it that way, then yes.”
However, there were still some things that felt off.
For example, the potion was supposed to make people lose their minds, but the guy in front of her was clearly very calm. He even employed diversion tactics, luring Bailu away to kill other players before ambushing her.
And it was the same now. Upon realizing that the opponent’s numbers were suspected to be two, and the strength of one of them was extremely unclear, he showed no strong urge to attack, but rather seemed to be calmly strategizing.
This discovery sent a chill down Bailu’s spine. She even regretted participating in this mission; the rewards and the danger were completely disproportionate.
“Don’t worry, I won’t interfere with you. That guy is for you to deal with alone.”
Li Wen, having guessed Bailu’s thoughts, said decisively.
“No way! Why fight one-on-one when we could fight two-on-one?”
Bailu twitched the corner of her mouth, not daring to say it aloud.
The moment Li Wen finished speaking, the wanted criminal moved.
He leaped up, clearing the height of two stories, and pounced towards Bailu with the momentum of a falling tiger.
Bailu seemed unable to cast a spell in time and could only raise her magic staff to block.
But a magic staff was, after all, just a fragile wooden stick. How could it withstand the pounce of a fierce tiger?
The wanted criminal’s beast-like pupils flashed with cruelty, but the next second he froze.
He truly froze. He suddenly couldn’t exert any strength, and his attack lost all its kinetic energy. He could only fall to the ground powerlessly.
Bailu retracted her staff, feeling a mix of helplessness and lingering fear.
The continuous effect of the “Stiffening Spell,” a level zero magic, was very short, so she immediately cast the next spell.
“Pain Lash!”
As Bailu swung her staff, an illusory whip with spikes lashed out, directly hitting the fallen wanted criminal.
The double damage from the fall and the whip made the wanted criminal bare his teeth in pain, but it also broke him out of his stiffened state. After a moment of respite, he seemed unaffected, landing on all fours and lunging at Bailu.
As a fragile Mage, and with her Life already in the kill zone, Bailu dared not let the enemy get close. She instantly cast a spell to disrupt his vision, causing his attack to miss.
The wanted criminal’s claws, covered in wounds and blood, narrowly brushed past Bailu, hitting the extreme limit of the attack range.
Bailu wiped a cold sweat from her brow, realizing that if this continued, she would be the one in danger.
She had to end the fight quickly.
She gripped her staff, preparing to cast a spell.
But the wanted criminal wouldn’t give her that chance. At such close range, there wasn’t even enough time to chant the incantation, let alone cast the spell.
He seemed to have already foreseen his claws tearing apart the Mage’s flesh and skull, revealing the delicious Brain Pulp within.
But the next moment, with no room to resist, the wanted criminal’s body disintegrated layer by layer, turning into a pool of multi-colored Flesh and Matter.
Bailu looked at the烂肉 on the ground, her heart unmoved.
When had she ever chanted an incantation?
