Chapter 139
Li Wen zipped through the rainy night. Considering her Mana consumption, and especially the current progress of Twilight Erosion, she didn’t fly too high, merely keeping pace with the height of the buildings.
This altitude made her less noticeable and prevented her line of sight from being obstructed by buildings. It was suitable for a quick pursuit while conserving Erosion progress.
However, after flying for a while, Li Wen suddenly couldn’t find the figure of the person who had escaped.
The other party seemed to have vanished into thin air, nowhere to be found.
Li Wen knitted her brows. She had been tracking the target’s location all along. Unless they used teleportation magic, how could they disappear from her sight?
She found an open space to land and quickly dispelled Witch Form before the Twilight Erosion progress exceeded 1%.
She wasn’t sure if this counted as exploiting a bug, but she couldn’t help it. The Twilight Erosion progress didn’t get any lower while in Witch Form.
Just as Li Wen was about to take out her Magic Map to check the target’s location, she noticed what appeared to be a fierce battle unfolding not too far ahead.
Was this a bit too coincidental?
Bailu was filled with confusion. With a wave of her staff, a combination of Stiffening Spell and Pain Lash flew out, finishing off a wounded Player. She then cast Body Reinforcement on herself and, with a single club blow, knocked out a scrawny Werewolf, effectively pulping its brains.
She had only come to stroll around and join the excitement, so why was she inexplicably dragged into a battlefield? Bailu truly couldn’t understand.
She had just entered the Old Town with a few high school students when they were attacked by several big-browed, big-eyed Werewolves. Bailu had dealt with similar enemies before, so handling them was relatively smooth. She directed and assisted the students, who resolved the Werewolves without any pressure.
After the fight, there were no major battle casualties, and the team was in high spirits, experiencing the fun of PvE. They all started praising Bailu, which made her feel quite embarrassed, almost to the point of disconnecting and running away.
However, what happened next became strange. Before they could even loot the corpses, several more Werewolves rushed over, shouting threats. One fool wasn’t paying attention and almost got sent to the respawn point. Fortunately, Bailu had been vigilant of her surroundings and saved him with Magic Echo Protection.
At this point, Bailu realized something was wrong. Even in other games, monster respawns weren’t this frequent. Furthermore, this was “World Tree: Origin,” a game where you could wander around all day without encountering a hostile Transcendent NPC. Even triggering a story quest wouldn’t result in enemies appearing wave after wave like this.
Moreover, they seemed to be specifically targeting her group, not just a random encounter.
Bailu vaguely sensed that she couldn’t get entangled with them. So, she decided to fight and retreat with her team. After finally taking down those Werewolves, she didn’t expect more Werewolves to jump out from strange places and attack them.
It was a tracking spell!
Bailu finally remembered that the tracking spell cast by the Wolf Leader on her had not been removed. After being kicked offline by the game for exceeding the time limit, Bailu’s classmate and roommate immediately found her and asked for her help in guiding newbies. Due to this engagement, when she came back online, Bailu hadn’t thought at all about the spell still being on her.
Logically, shouldn’t the spell status also refresh upon re-logging? Although this game had never had such a setting.
Understanding that she was actually the culprit behind all of this, Bailu’s scalp tingled and she broke out in a cold sweat. She didn’t dare to say anything, only continuing to lead the high school students to kill monsters while fleeing. As they fled, they found themselves running into more and more people, not just those crazy Werewolves but also other Transcendent beings, and even other Players.
They seemed to have stumbled into a chaotic battlefield. NPCs and Players were fighting each other here. At a glance, Bailu couldn’t even tell how many groups were fighting.
The most terrifying thing was that the moment she peeked, all the Werewolves’ gazes focused on her. While that would have been enough, given they had been like this all along, perhaps because of the Werewolves, the attention of other NPCs and Players also shifted to them. And, after whatever thought process went through their minds, they also began to hunt them along with the Werewolves.
Could these people have seen the Werewolves’ movements and assumed the Divine Artifact was on this group? Bailu cursed inwardly, thinking this was too absurd.
Facing such a Quantity of hostile units, Bailu had no energy left to protect others. Fortunately, this group wasn’t united. After all, they were already in a free-for-all before this, and now it was just a free-for-all with an additional target.
This chaotic battle gave Bailu an opportunity to survive among such a large number of opponents with her outstanding casting ability and Magic.
But this was ultimately limited. No matter how good Bailu’s control was, there would be times for mistakes. No matter how strong her Magic was, there would be times when her Mana ran dry. Moreover, there were no shortage of experts among the Player groups.
Just as Bailu took down another Player with a poison dart, a small dagger emerged from her blind spot and stabbed towards her vital spot.
Bailu didn’t react in time, or rather, she hadn’t even considered dodging. At the moment before the short sword touched her, Echo Protection automatically triggered, casting a translucent magic shield, slightly thinner than paper, over Bailu’s skin, blocking the short sword.
The attacker snorted. Dark power wrapped around the short sword, and the sword, empowered by Shadow, easily pierced the magic shield. But no matter how fast he was, he couldn’t match Bailu’s Flash of Insight!
A white light flickered briefly. Before the attacker could even exert force, his Head exploded like a rotten watermelon.
Bailu had no time to celebrate her success because another Player was attacking her almost simultaneously from behind.
Flash of Insight was still on cooldown. As for Magic, even a zero-level cantrip would be too late to cast. So, Bailu raised her staff and decisively activated its innate spell – Paralysis Spell.
Spiral-shaped colorful light shot out from the staff, hitting the Player wielding the crossbow. Bailu dashed forward, and under the enhancement of Swift Spell, her movement speed increased by a full 300% compared to before. The Body Reinforcement spell also granted her Strength and stamina comparable to an adult High Mountain Race.
Bailu swung her staff and hit the incapacitated opponent’s Head, directly hitting the vital spot and instantly killing him.
After catching her breath, Bailu wanted to check on the status of the high school students, if there was any opportunity to do so.
“How much Mana do you have left?”
A voice sounded from overhead, and Bailu froze slightly.
