Becoming a Witch in an Isekai Game – Chapter 33

Chapter 33 The Eldest Son of the Holy See and the Ghost Fairy

Li Wen didn’t continue reading; she could already guess the outcome.

The Wild Mage was facing a Spellbreaker, someone who could detect magic and even counter it. He had no chance of winning. Spellbreaker wasn’t a class, but a title. During the Norradon Empire’s decline, various churches began invading from the west. Facing Norradon’s powerful magic, the Holy See trained a group of knights specifically to counter mages. This strategy proved highly effective and the training methods persisted into later generations, with those who completed it being called Spellbreakers.

Why would the Holy See’s “Eldest Son” appear here?

Li Wen was filled with questions.

If “World Tree: Origin” was truly just a game, then Moria Einon was a significant figure even within the entire game’s storyline. He was known as the Eldest Son of the Holy See, a Rank Six Crimson Shepherd, the most outstanding Holy See Knight, who had completed all of the Holy See’s special training. He served the Secret Church, and it was said that the blood of heretics and demons on his hands was enough to stain all of Canaan crimson.

In the not-too-distant future, after Arthur destroyed the kingdom, Moria was one of the commanders of the Red Knight Legion that annihilated the Dark Dawn. Even further down the timeline, when the City of Sin launched its final counterattack against Canaan, it was he who single-handedly intercepted and killed several Demon Sages and Blood Lust High Priests.

And for Li Wen, he was somewhat of an old acquaintance. Perhaps “old acquaintance” was an understatement, but Moria Einon had indeed hunted her for a considerable period in her previous life.

Back then, Li Wen hadn’t joined the Strategy Team yet. She had just suffered a setback and was racking her brain to improve her strength, even resorting to using a ritual listed as forbidden to gain power. Moria happened to be passing through the city she was in and coincidentally stumbled upon Li Wen performing an evil sacrifice.

Therefore, as expected, the Eldest Son of the Holy See launched an attack on the perpetrator of the evil sacrifice. Li Wen didn’t even have time to argue, and her head was nearly severed by a sword. After a fierce and crushing battle, Li Wen was utterly defeated and barely managed to survive.

For a period afterward, Li Wen was constantly pursued by Moria until she was forced to leave the mainland continent to escape him. Li Wen didn’t know why he pursued her so relentlessly, but what else could be expected from a rabid dog of the Church?

Now, encountering her “former” enemy in an unexpected place, Li Wen, while fearing his sudden madness, was also contemplating his intentions.

Moria at this point in time shouldn’t be as outrageous as he would become later. At the very least, he shouldn’t have started his pilgrimage on the Holy See’s Path yet, so his level wouldn’t exceed thirty. Although Moria habitually wore knight’s armor, he wasn’t a Path of Judgment or Path of Guardians, but a Sacred Fire Priest of the Path of Sacrifice. Wearing knight’s armor was merely a lingering habit from his training at the Holy See.

What combat power could a Rank Three Path of Sacrifice possess?

At this point, Moria wouldn’t kill every heretic he saw, so he wasn’t on a mission for the Secret Church.

Perhaps it had something to do with that Ghost Fairy, Grandma Martha?

Li Wen didn’t dwell on it. In this life, she didn’t want any association with lunatics from any church. It was best to finish her business while Moria was busy lecturing that Wild Mage.

So, she didn’t linger and walked directly towards the Ghost Fairy’s residence.

The Dwarf had said that the Ghost Fairy Grandma Martha lived in a treehouse, and Li Wen had only seen one treehouse in the entire Fairy Market.

Its trunk was an oak tree large enough for dozens of people to embrace. Normal oak trees didn’t grow this large; it was likely due to Fairy magic. The treehouse was built in the canopy, with a wooden staircase connecting it to the ground below.

There was no one around, perhaps because no one dared to disturb the Ghost Fairy. Li Wen went up the stairs and gently knocked on the door.

But she received no response.

Li Wen, not wanting to waste time, tried to open the door. Finding it unlocked by any means, she pushed it open and entered.

“Is anyone here? I’m looking for Grandma Martha.”

The inside of the treehouse was a small space. Rather than a residence, it was more like a wicked wizard’s laboratory.

The most conspicuous item was a large crucible, not yet lit, containing a viscous, bright yellow substance that didn’t resemble a liquid. Not far from the crucible was a material rack divided into two sections. The upper section held various plants and animal corpses being air-dried, while the lower section contained animal tissues preserved in liquid. Li Wen saw various organs and viscera from many sentient beings, and even the head of a human.

Besides these, there were various alchemy equipment and tools. Li Wen glanced around casually and paid them no mind.

The entire treehouse was empty. The only peculiar thing was a mirror placed in a corner. It was hidden and easily overlooked, but it reflected everything in the room, including Li Wen, who had just entered.

Li Wen looked at her reflection in the mirror, and her reflection looked back at her.

“What a rude thing.”

The reflection spoke.

Li Wen wasn’t surprised. Ghost Fairies were also called Mirror Fairies. It was said they could enter unknown worlds through mirrors, which was the basis for their elusive nature.

“Hello, I’m just here to disturb you, I have no other ill intentions.”

“I have not received any guests for over a hundred years.”

Ripples appeared on the surface of the mirror, and a bloated, ugly face accompanied by a gaunt figure emerged from it.

Its head was significantly larger than a normal person’s, its nose sharp and hooked, like a giant hook. Its mouth was split from ear to ear, filled with withered yellow fangs. This was likely the popular image of a witch in folklore.

“Rules are always meant to be broken,” Li Wen said.

“Then what right do you have to make me break my rules?” Grandma Martha slowly walked towards the crucible. Its steps were heavy, yet its figure was as ethereal as a ghost. It picked up a bowl spoon covered in filth, scooped a spoonful of the concentrated soup from the crucible, and tasted it, “The root of the Golden Fir after boiling, mixed with the fragrance of Blood-Thirsty Grass and Belladonna juice, truly a lingering taste.”

“A high-grade hallucinogen?” Hearing the ingredients, Li Wen tried to guess the purpose of the pot of soup.

“No, it’s a Soul Return Elixir.” The Ghost Fairy grinned. “You have some common knowledge of alchemy, but not much.”

Li Wen didn’t know the use of this potion. She guessed it was a formula the Ghost Fairy had researched, so she bypassed the question.

“I need the Fallen Shadow Potion. Someone said you might be able to refine this potion, and if so, I will offer you a satisfactory reward.”

“Fallen Shadow Potion? Are you aiming to advance to Shadow Assassin, or to enter the Shadow Realm? Ha, whatever… I do know the method for making this potion, and I can refine it for you, but I have one condition: you must first kill the Holy Knight at the door.” The Ghost Fairy grinned.

Before Li Wen could even react, the door behind her was shattered by a sword light burning with fearsome crimson fire.
