Chapter Forty-Four Perfect Amber
The Daughters of Amber will kill all intruders.
Once a Daughter of Amber discovers an intruder, all Daughters of Amber will be awakened due to a chain reaction.
Li Wen stopped even breathing. She could feel the gaze of the Daughter of Amber fixed on her—though the Daughter of Amber had no eyes, and she had no physical body in her Shadow state—that sticky, cold touch felt like a reptile’s lick, enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine.
She was unsure if this awakened Daughter of Amber had already discovered her. If that were the case, losing her life wouldn’t be a big deal, but if all the other Daughters of Amber were also awakened because of it, then all her efforts would be in vain, and she would have to seek other methods.
Fortunately, however, this Daughter of Amber soon turned its face away, seemingly only curious about the shadow on the ground, not truly noticing Li Wen.
Li Wen did not act rashly. She remained in place for a full quarter of an hour, and after confirming that the Daughter of Amber had not found her, she moved forward step by step, pausing with each step, slowly making her way towards the door of the inner sanctum.
The Daughter of Amber, which had long since awakened, began to move for some reason, frightening Li Wen into stopping. She watched as the Daughter of Amber’s cloak slowly fell away, revealing a smooth back drawn with eerie patterns. Those root-like patterns began to flash with a light Li Wen couldn’t discern the color of, and they spread outwards from the Daughter of Amber’s back.
They grew and intertwined like roots, eventually forming the shape of giant wings.
The Daughter of Amber floated into the air, flapped its wings, and vanished from Li Wen’s sight in an instant, leaving no trace.
Where did it go?
Li Wen couldn’t imagine, nor did she want to think about it.
Now, the door to the inner sanctum was unguarded. The Primordial Codex of Ending was only a few steps away. As long as she walked over and pushed open the door, all her efforts would be worthwhile.
But before that, Li Wen’s gaze fell upon the cloak on the ground, an item left behind by the Daughter of Amber. This was the Amber Temple, which no one had visited since the Golden Age. That cloak was naturally not an item from outsiders. Without a doubt, it must be some sort of precious treasure.
Should she pick it up?
This question flashed through Li Wen’s mind.
She was currently in a Shadow state, unable to touch any physical objects, and could only rely on shadows. This meant that to take the cloak, Li Wen would have to first deactivate her “Shadow Walker” state.
This was undoubtedly a very risky attempt, but it was worth a try.
This was because the awakening of the Daughters of Amber was not instantaneous; it required a process, a slow revival from a deep slumber, gradually shedding the twilight power of their amber state.
This time was enough for Li Wen to pick up the cloak and enter the inner sanctum. The inner sanctum was a safe area, where The Primordial Codex of Ending was enshrined. All Twilight believers who trespassed into the inner sanctum of the Amber Temple would be severely punished by the Witch Scolding House.
Li Wen was not one to hesitate. Just as the Strategy Team leader had once commented on her, Li Wen saw no probability in her eyes. It was precisely because of this that when no one could be sure if Urd’s Sting could rewrite fate, Li Wen could mercilessly kill herself with a Divine Artifact.
And so, Li Wen resolutely deactivated her Shadow state and charged forward. At this moment, she could already hear sounds like ice cracking; countless Daughters of Amber were breaking free from their restraints.
Li Wen reached out and picked up the cloak. A terrifying oppressive force spread throughout the area. This temple had been in a state of deathly silence for many years, and now it was coming alive for the first time. Specks of amber dust dissipated in the air, the Daughters of Amber stretched their exquisite bodies, and the root-like patterns began to flash with a terrifying glow.
At this critical juncture, Li Wen rolled over and burst through the door of the inner sanctum.
Her previous position was instantly surrounded by countless figures. Looking out from inside the door, the entire corridor was filled with their figures. They were all beautiful, fair-skinned girls, exuding a terrifying oppressive aura, yet none of them dared to cross the threshold of the inner sanctum. They could only stand outside the door, silently threatening Li Wen within.
Li Wen’s heart remained calm. She stood up and directly closed the door to the inner sanctum again.
If you can’t see it, it doesn’t exist.
“No wonder it’s so noisy outside. So someone has trespassed here.”
A clear, unfamiliar voice reached Li Wen’s ears. Li Wen’s scalp tingled. The guide had not mentioned at all that there were living people inside the inner sanctum of the temple!
Li Wen forced herself to calm down and turned around.
The style and decoration of the inner sanctum were more religious. Above was a huge skylight, through which the gradually shifting red and yellow twilight could be seen, and beneath the twilight, a towering, half-withered tree. In the center of the inner sanctum, opposite the skylight, was a massive eye-shaped mural, the pupil of which was also amber-colored, gradually shifting between red and yellow.
And opposite the door, where the altar should have been, was a thick gray curtain. The voice Li Wen heard came from behind the curtain.
“Who are you?”
Li Wen tried to communicate through words to gain intelligence, but the other party did not seem to intend to communicate.
“What’s in your hand…”
“Spoils of war,” Li Wen said without hesitation, glancing at the cloak in her hand.
“That’s Livya’s favorite cloak. Even when performing the final ritual, she refused to take it off…”
Li Wen fell silent. According to what this person said, the Daughter of Amber who had been guarding the entrance should be the “Livya” the mysterious voice mentioned. And judging from the tone, Livya’s relationship with this person seemed quite intimate.
Now she was in deep trouble. Just a moment ago, she had declared in front of the person that her friend’s most cherished item was her spoils of war.
“I heard Livya leave. She’s going to destroy some annoying insects. It’s strange, this lonely city hasn’t been visited by anyone for a long time… Tell me, has anything happened outside?”
What happened… Does a player invasion, the approaching apocalypse, or the end of the world count?
“I see, so that’s why you came here to seek The Primordial Codex of Ending?”
The other party seemed able to read Li Wen’s thoughts, directly seeing what Li Wen was thinking. This was incredible for a Player.
“No, I can’t see anything. It’s just that you… stranger who has visited this place, you have revealed everything about yourself to me. It’s as if a mirror has been placed before you. You are outside the mirror, and the you within the mirror is communicating with me.”
Li Wen was speechless. She had never heard of such an ability. Even the Mystic Path, renowned for its endless spells, seemed to have no record of such a spell.
It did not seem to belong to any known path or lineage.
“Who exactly are you?”
After a long silence, the other party slowly spoke,
“I am the Chief Witch, the first Boon of Twilight, the last gravekeeper of Grellion, and everyone calls me ‘Perfect Amber’.”
