I apologize for the late submission.
I’m posting one day late.
Another side
“To think that…”
When Kaido contacted them, Katsu and Minami came to the Party Room that evening.
Kaido chose his words carefully to convey the gravity of the situation, suppressing his usual cheerful atmosphere.
After hearing about Amelia’s situation and what Jiro had said about his resolve, Kaido saw Katsu hesitating, unsure of what to do, as would be expected of someone his age.
And as for Minami, the other one.
“Hmm~”
She was thinking deeply.
Kaido was honestly at a loss for how to respond, as he hadn’t expected Minami to react this way, even though he knew Jiro would come later due to his busy schedule.
He had thought she would immediately respond impulsively, and was even considering how to calm her down.
Contrary to his expectations, she was thinking seriously, as if re-examining herself.
“To be honest, I too want to go and save Amī-chan right away, gozaru.”
“That’s right, su.”
Kaido knew that the women in this party got along well.
They weren’t alike, but sometimes they seemed so close it was like they were sisters.
Kitamiya, the eldest and a natural leader; Minami, the troublemaker but a mood maker; and Amelia, cherished by the two of them as the youngest.
Kitamiya and Minami bumped heads often, but it was the kind of closeness that came from arguing, and they had no intention of hurting each other.
That’s precisely why they had been able to continue working together.
“But I understand what the leader is saying too, gozaru. Honestly, I didn’t expect to go to war myself, gozaru.”
And while Minami might seem to act on impulse and momentum, she was actually the most skilled at controlling her emotions.
She had an exquisite sense of how much of what emotion to show without causing problems.
This might be surprising, considering she was somewhat reclusive and viewed social interactions as troublesome, but for Minami, it was the other way around.
She wasn’t reclusive because social interactions were troublesome; rather, she was keenly perceptive of others’ emotions and understood what kind of feelings to direct at them, which led her to delve deeper into them and find them troublesome.
Simply put, Minami had high insight.
Kaido was similar in that regard and sensed it somewhat.
In his case, he had honed this skill during his time at a black company, where he had to carefully understand interpersonal relationships and deal with superiors based on their individual temperaments.
However, he was impressed internally by her ability to control her emotions to this extent.
“But well, it’s fine, gozaru. Yeah, Kaido-senpai, I’ll go save Amī-chan, gozaru.”
“Eh?”
“No, Minami-chan? You don’t have to decide so easily, su? Come on, even if there’s little time, there’s still some.”
However, that assessment was quickly overturned.
Not downwards, but upwards.
Katsu looked at Minami, his childhood friend whom he thought would know, as if she were an unknown entity, wondering why she could decide so readily.
Kaido, as if to stop Minami, who had so easily made up her mind after her previous long deliberation, urged her to think again.
“It’s no problem, gozaru. My thoughts won’t change, gozaru.”
Despite Kaido’s concern, Minami’s response remained unwavering.
Seeing her, Kaido realized that she had properly considered and made up her mind, especially when compared to Kitamiya, who had shown her emotions so openly just moments before.
“I, or rather, for just this moment, perhaps it’s better to speak normally. I like the atmosphere here.”
Therefore, Katsu was bewildered to see Minami speaking normally, which he hadn’t heard from her in quite some time.
Minami, speaking calmly but with her back straightened and her body held upright, looked like a different person.
“Probably, if I do nothing and let her go, I won’t be able to stay here. That’s what I think.”
Neither Kaido nor Katsu could utter words of denial.
Minami spoke as if she were talking to herself, or rather, as if she were confirming the sincerity of her resolve.
“If it means protecting a place where I can be myself and enjoy myself honestly, I can move forward.”
They felt that she was implying she would do anything, even if the words “stain myself with blood” weren’t used.
There was no one in the room who doubted her resolve any longer.
“…W-well! This is embarrassing, gozaru! Seriously, seriousness doesn’t suit me, gozaru!!”
The serious atmosphere was dissolved by Minami, who had returned to her usual self.
Looking at Minami, who was playfully acting shy, clasping her cheeks with both hands, Kaido let his tense shoulders relax and thought that, despite being younger, she was able to express her will so firmly.
He was aware of various complex emotions, such as not wanting to be outdone or feeling incapable, and contemplated what he should do.
“Minami, I…”
“Stop, gozaru. Katsu should think about it once, gozaru.”
“That’s right, su. I want to think about it now too. I’ll worry about it with you, Katsu-kun.”
“Eh? Kaido-senpai is going to think about it? Worry about it, gozaru?”
“How rude, su?! Even I think about it a little, su!? I have my worries too, su!?”
“Is that true, gozaru~?”
Minami stopped Katsu, who was about to make a decision based on the flow of conversation, and Kaido nodded in agreement.
Katsu felt a sense of urgency at the fact that his childhood friend, whom he had always been with and thought that she couldn’t manage without him, was now trying to move forward on her own.
He had always told her to be independent, but recently, the only time he said it was when she neglected her chores.
He rarely had any other occasions to say it.
Feeling a mix of sadness and the sensation of being left behind, Katsu found the playful banter between Kaido and Minami somewhat distant.
“I…”
Without even vocalizing what he should do, the rest of his words also failed to come out.
He realized that he had often acted for Minami’s sake.
Katsu, who rarely acted for himself, was unsure of what to do and became troubled.
Minami noticed this, but precisely because they were close, she knew she shouldn’t interfere here and trusted her troubled childhood friend.
“It’s true, su!”
“For example, gozaru?”
Let’s respect my childhood friend’s choice.
Another side END
Though smaller than the training grounds, the spacious area was filled with me and Himik, surrounded by Giants.
“Sorry about this, Himik.”
“It’s fine. I’m happy to be relied upon by my Master.”
Various weapons and armor, likely brought from a warehouse, were being fitted to Himik by several female Giants, who moved busily.
The female Giants, though timid around a Fallen Angel, accurately measured Himik.
While watching this scene, I spoke with her.
Her cooperation was absolutely necessary for Amelia’s rescue.
However, from my perspective, it felt questionable to ask a woman to come to war, rather than a master and subordinate relationship based on affection.
That’s why her being able to show a genuine smile when I told her not to worry was a relief, but at the same time, I felt guilty, as if I were exploiting her affection.
“If only I could protect you, that would be best. As a man.”
Though the shop wasn’t strictly non-smoking, I didn’t feel like smoking in front of the craftsmen preparing the equipment and Himik.
I quietly watched Himik, who was at the center of the Giants’ movements, taking measurements and discussing what equipment to use.
“It’s alright! Master will surely surpass me someday! I guarantee it!!”
Really, being trusted so honestly made me feel strangely awkward.
Honestly, I had some anxieties about whether I could save Amelia, but Himik’s words made me feel like I had to do my best.
“Hey, Jiro. The armor is fine, but what about the weapons? If you want, I have some special ones—”
“I don’t need any cursed magic swords.”
“Tch. You knew, huh?”
“You always go for that, don’t you?”
“What choice do I have? Beings like Fallen Angels are rare, let alone such a magnificent being as a Seraph.”
Hands, the weapons shop owner, who interrupted our peaceful conversation, had his apprentices bring out a large quantity of weapons.
“It might be fine for Himik, but… I don’t want to carry any risks.”
“Tsk, how boring.”
“Don’t be ridiculous.”
I wanted to tell him not to give cursed weapons to a woman who confessed her love.
“Hmm? Are these the weapons prepared? Master, can I use any of them?”
“Yeah, I have permission from the supervisor. Find one that fits you.”
“Understood. Shopkeeper, I’ll be taking them.”
“Uh, yeah.”
After finishing her measurements, Himik slowly approached the pile of weapons. Without minding the Giants moving away, she carefully examined each one.
“Shopkeeper, do you have any larger weapons? This sword here is fine as a backup, but…”
“Whoa there, that’s a Giant’s axe. Are there any larger than that?”
Putting aside the quality, it seemed she couldn’t find her ideal weapon.
The two-edged sword she wore at her waist was a short sword with a blade about fifty centimeters long.
The material was a special metal called Orichalcum, and intricate magical script was engraved on the blade.
It was a magnificent sword, the kind where it was better not to ask the price per item.
Hands, standing next to me, was impressed by Himik’s discerning eye, wondering if she would choose that one.
However, that was just a backup weapon.
She couldn’t find a main weapon.
She swung a great axe larger than her body with one hand, but her expression clouded as if unsatisfied, indicating she would have to compromise with the best available weapon.
“…I see. There aren’t any, are there?”
Seeing her dejected look, like a discarded puppy, made me think, “Well, if they don’t have it, they don’t have it.”
“No, there is.”
“There is?!”
Hands denied this and quietly told a disciple to fetch something. The disciple, hearing this, reconfirmed if he was really going to bring it out, but…
“Enough already!! Hurry up and bring it!!”
Shouted at by Hands, three disciples hastily ran off.
“Hey, what are you planning to bring?”
“It’s a masterpiece among the ones I’ve forged. I’m sure that Fallen Angel sister will be satisfied with it. However…”
“…A magic sword?”
“It’s definitely a magic weapon. Its specs are incredible, no doubt about it. But even as its creator, it has a strong quirk.”
“I’ll hear about the effects later, what are the drawbacks?”
“First, it’s simply heavy. Even three strong Giant warriors would need to carry it together.”
“At that point, it’s dangerous. And you said ‘first,’ meaning…”
“Yeah, there’s another troublesome thing. It’s an incredible magic power consumer. It has no mental or physical drawbacks, but its fuel efficiency is extremely poor. If you misjudge the controls, you’ll be dead in an instant.”
“Hey.”
I glared at him, as if asking if he intended to make Himik use such a thing.
“That’s all I have that can satisfy that sister.”
And when the weapon was brought, I felt an immediate sense of unease.
“Guan Dao.”
Looking at the black, ominous weapon, I, who recently had some knowledge about weapons, spoke its name.
It was the same weapon used by the Flying General, Lu Bu Fengxian.
“It’s made from Damascus, a hard metal, crafted with our unique Giant forging methods. How about it, young lady?”
“Master.”
Seeing this, Himik seemed to have taken a liking to it. When she asked if she could hold it, I hesitated slightly, but…
“If anything happens, let go of it immediately.”
“Understood.”
I nodded slowly. Then, Himik reached out to the weapon placed on the stand, slowly gripping the hilt.
And lifted it.
Just doing that brought cheers from the entire area.
“Hmm.”
“Are you alright?”
“Yes, Master! It’s a bit heavy, but it’s good!”
I checked if she was alright, but it seemed Himik herself was fine.
She energetically began swinging the Guan Dao.
Though it was probably just a light warm-up, even that made the air scream.
“How is it, Master!!”
“Yeah, it’s amazing, Himik.”
“That’s great! With this, I can protect you thoroughly!!”
“You’re truly reliable.”
“Fufu! Please look forward to it, Master!!”
Watching Himik energetically swing the Guan Dao, while Hands stood by, stunned in disbelief as if at something that didn’t exist, I felt relieved.
“Yeah, you’re truly reliable. My future wife candidate.”
Her figure was like an overwhelming conqueror, bringing an end to everything. She seemed pleased by my expectations with a smile, but the weapon completely consumed that atmosphere. As I watched her, I found her somewhat cute, which likely meant I was steadily falling for Himik.
Today’s special quote:
How one acts or thinks is individual freedom, but what kind of combination is a Fallen Angel with a Guan Dao?
That concludes this installment.
