While listening to the president’s speech, which was intended to announce the creation of an island in this sea, I stood by on the deck, holding a colossal object.
I stood on the ship’s deck, bathed in the sea breeze and even receiving the spray of waves, yet the vessel remained perfectly still.
“In other words, through the effects of this magic tool, the environmental impact will be virtually zero.”
The president was explaining the function of this magic tool, which had been previously announced to the government: the “Earthmaker.”
While every participant knew about the magic tool, this ostentatious speech was a calculated move to establish an implicit agreement with the government by openly explaining the device without being stopped, thereby creating a precedent.
From our perspective in the Demon Lord’s Army, this process was paramount.
However, even with prior explanation, creating an island, or something akin to an artificial structure like a Mega Float, was one thing. But to create an island through a natural phenomenon? Most people would consider it impossible.
There were still nations harboring doubts, and some even believed the president and the Tree King were merely in costume.
These doubting nations lacked any significant magical organizations behind the scenes.
Compared to their heyday, magical organizations on Earth had gone into hiding, passing down their lineage and techniques without revealing themselves on the surface. Consequently, many such organizations had perished during this process.
Nations without such a foundation tended to dismiss such things as occultism or mere trickery due to their lack of prior knowledge.
Conversely, nations with a strong foundation of knowledge in these areas were more inclined to believe in the possibility.
It was difficult to believe, yet most of those present acknowledged the possibility.
The real event was about to begin. If, by any chance, the island creation failed, it would crack the foundation of trust between nations.
That was why, even now, I had been repeatedly visualizing the flow of magic power in my mind, circulating the magic to maintain its purity.
“Haa,”
This was always how it was during crucial tasks. I experienced a duality: a part of me that felt fear and another part that observed it with a calm mind.
It felt like having two selves, which was a strange sensation.
It was the same during the battle with the instructor. Back then, I felt like I had three selves.
A self that feared combat, a self that enjoyed combat, and a self that monitored the other two.
As long as this third self existed, I could act with composure.
There was no need to tell myself it was alright. A single deep breath like this was enough to relieve tension, allowing me to move my body and function my mind without issue. In essence, failure would only occur if I misjudged the process.
I had simulated and confirmed that process countless times.
There were no problems.
“Jiro-, it’s almost time,” Keiri’s telepathic call echoed.
“Ah,”
Keiri, who managed the schedule, had sent me a telepathic message. The president’s speech was meticulously timed; it concluded with not a moment’s deviation. The pace, content, and quality were all calculated.
This meant the magic tool would be used as planned.
“Well! I have kept you listening to a long explanation, but now it’s time for the main event. All ships have maintained sufficient safe distances. Now, behold the result!”
As the president declared this, I began channeling magic into the magic tool.
Now, there’s a question: can an individual possess enough magic power to create an island? To put it simply, the answer is that it’s not impossible.
Of course, with typical magic power reserves, one could only inject less than ten percent of the required amount. To compensate, magic tools are normally equipped with magic stones. These stones allow the magic tool to function by supplying the necessary magic power.
Magic stones, by their very nature, are designed to contain magic power. Thus, most magic tools use magic stones as a sort of battery, channeling magic into their spells.
However, this particular magic tool was special due to its environmental context, making that role insufficient. After all, this was a world without mana. Even if the spell itself was engraved onto the magic stone and released magic power directly, the additional consumption of mana for both magic release and spell activation would result in an outcome of less than thirty percent of what was calculated.
So, how could we achieve the required standard? It was simple: supplement the magic power and compensate for the burden. My role was that of a battery recharger.
“Spell connection complete. Keiri, Muil-san, let’s go.”
“Understood. Whenever you’re ready.”
“Use the magic you’ve accumulated for this day to your heart’s content.”
As the magic diffused, its concentration—or rather, its viscosity, to use a more fitting term in this context—was maintained by preserving its purity. By enhancing the cohesion between magic particles, it prevented dissipation and increased the efficiency of magic power channeled into the magic tool.
The closer it got to the required magic power, the more it converged into a cone, and light overflowed from its casing.
The air shimmered.
Even now, I was channeling magic equivalent to ten great spells. While there was still leeway in terms of magic power volume, by adding another layer of coating around the magic, it became enveloped in magic that was less prone to dissipation. Applying a process that allowed it to dive deep into the ocean with minimal magic release resulted in the magic tool glowing like a radiant jewel.
“Haa,”
Preparation was complete. Now, I just had to throw it into the sea.
*Su*, I dropped my hips and leaped.
Since I was holding a brilliantly shining object, there was no way I could be missed. I leaped over a hundred meters while holding what appeared to be a heavy object. The moment I moved away from Tufaris, I felt a sense of breathlessness. Magic drained from my body, leaving a peculiar mix of lethargy and buoyancy.
Instantly shaking off the faint desire to quit, I opened my eyes, sensed the beacon’s magic, and aimed for its location.
“Haaah!!”
With a single breath, I threw it. My enhanced throw, reinforced by magic, instantly broke the sound barrier, slamming the colossal magic tool onto the sea’s surface.
Normally, such a brute force throw would be inefficient. When hitting the water’s surface at supersonic speeds, the impact is akin to hitting asphalt. This could potentially damage the magic tool. The usual method would be to gently lower it into the sea and let its weight and the subsequent propulsion carry it towards the seabed. However, this would take too long and consume excess mana. Therefore, this time, speed was the priority.
To achieve this, significant funds were invested to ensure the magic tool possessed the strength to withstand a few of Instructor Kio’s attacks. The conical casing was designed to spin spirally, propelled by the magic I injected, allowing it to burrow through the water towards the seabed. Thanks to this, the magic tool plunged into the sea at tremendous speed, burrowing through the water with brute force.
“Keiri.”
“Yes, yes. It’s alright, I’m observing it here.”
Through magic detection, I could see it sinking rapidly into the sea, but unable to gauge the distance to the seabed, I could only stare intently at the silent ocean. The government officials on board, as well as the crew members on the surrounding ships, knew this was not the end. After all, according to the president’s explanation, changes would be visible in five minutes.
“It will reach the seabed in another thirty seconds. Magic attenuation rate… incredible, it’s thirty percent less than the estimated value.”
Furthermore, something unexpectedly positive occurred.
“Maintaining planned speed smoothly. Depth achievement rate: thirty percent.”
Keiri’s report revealed that the magic consumption was far less than anticipated. Its structural integrity had been proven by Instructor Kio’s durability test, it could withstand water pressure, and it was maintaining its speed as planned. All this had taken less than a minute.
“Depth achievement rate: fifty percent. No equipment troubles, magic reaction normal.”
Two minutes, or rather, almost three minutes had passed. The deeper it sank, the greater the water pressure became. This increased the burden on the magic tool, causing a slight decrease in speed, but it was still within the planned parameters.
“Depth achievement rate: ninety percent. No abnormalities.”
And finally.
“Ten seconds until seabed contact… five, four, three, two, one.”
Carrying this welcome miscalculation, the magic tool continued its descent and was about to reach its target seabed. The countdown to seabed contact began, its broadcast reaching the vessels in the area, and a hush fell over the ships.
“Contact.”
The moment Keiri reported this, a colossal magic circle materialized on the sea’s surface. Its scope precisely matched the size of the island to be constructed.
“Earthmaker activation confirmed.”
Immediately thereafter, a waterspout was generated in an instant. The volume of water was equivalent to that directly beneath an island approximately twenty kilometers in diameter. Normally, this would create a massive tsunami and a powerful undertow that would suck everything into the gaping hole. However, none of that occurred. The water from the waterspout was instantly fixed in the air, forming a colossal sphere of water. The void left by the water remained fixed and stable, as if it were solid concrete.
A murmur of surprise rippled through the ships. I marveled at how, even knowing what to expect, such an unreal sight would still astonish people, and I continued to watch the island’s creation from my vantage point on deck.
Next, a tremendous rumbling sound echoed. Judging by its intensity, it was more than enough to be mistaken for a major earthquake. Yet, the area around the hole remained undisturbed by waves. This meant that the geological shifts occurring on the seabed were not affecting the surface at all.
Incidentally, the large hole created on the seabed by the Earthmaker, which appeared to be the size of the island, was not a straight cylinder. Since a mountain was being formed on the seabed, it was more like a scooped-out shape, similar to aプリン (pudding). In other words, an unseen mountain was rapidly rising from beneath the sea.
The principle behind the Earthmaker creating an island was similar to the process of volcanic eruptions piling up lava over time. The difference was that instead of an eruption, it was simply the continuous formation of hard geological strata using earth magic. Therefore, no earthquakes occurred, and a safe foundation, indistinguishable from a natural island, was created.
Furthermore, the Earthmaker could also incorporate various structures during island creation, such as underground water sources or reinforced foundations. This flexibility meant that if the constraints of rarity and cost were overcome, it would be an ideal magic tool for creating desired environments.
“It’s emerging.”
In a mere fifteen minutes since it was thrown, the summit of the island emerged. The miracle of an island, which nature would take thousands, even tens of thousands, of years to create, was now manifesting before me. The magic tool’s magic power was also well within its estimated reserves. With this continued momentum, the island’s height began to increase rapidly. While the area was predetermined by negotiations with the government, a certain degree of freedom was permitted regarding its height. If a dungeon were to be established, it could encompass an entire island with mana. This would make it the first land on Earth where the Demon Lord’s Army could freely roam. As a safety measure, considering tsunami prevention, a sufficient height was ensured.
“Did I overdo it?”
A mountain range, which could almost be called a sheer cliff, was born, resulting in the creation of an island that would make harbor development slightly troublesome. A wry smile spread across my face at the outcome exceeding my imagination. Sensing the commotion from the ships, I initiated one final magic spell.
“Well, it’s fine.”
I retrieved the colossal water sphere floating in the sky using dimensional storage.
“Well, the island is complete for now.”
The objective had been achieved.
A word for today:
Seeing is believing.
