Happy New Year!!
I’ll do my best this year to bring it to completion, so please treat it favorably!
I really think about it.
Even for me, her own son, my mother’s existence surpasses my understanding.
Was it when I was a child that I first thought that?
I remember thinking in elementary school that my mother was fundamentally different from other mothers.
My mother once killed a bear with just a stick when I was in high school.
I truly believed that all mothers could do that, and I was called a liar by my classmates when I told them what my father had taught me.
The next major event was when I started junior high school, and I was often left alone at home. She called it training for living alone and made me cook for myself.
By the time I became a high school student, I was living alone at home.
Her saying, “I’m going to go see the aurora for a bit” was at least better because she told me the destination, but when she traveled based on intuition, saying, “I have a feeling I’ll see something good,” I had no idea where she was going.
Therefore, I haven’t really had the experience of relying on my parents like people in general do.
That doesn’t mean I don’t feel loved, though.
When I was a child, we went out to eat together, she celebrated my birthday, and instead of an amusement park, she showed me sloths in the depths of the jungle, so I experienced things that people don’t usually experience.
She also attended my sports days and parent-teacher conferences diligently.
And I am aware that, until I became an adult, my mother showered me with affection that could be understood by the general public.
However, if you ask me if it was typical parenting, I can definitively say NO.
Think about it calmly. If I asked for a game, she gave me an experience like a game by taking me to a real ancient ruin.
I don’t know how my mother comes up with these ideas.
Then, such a mother appeared without any warning, preempting my actions and, what’s more, pregnant with a sibling who is considerably younger than me.
“So, what happened?”
“You’re already assuming something happened.”
“If my mother just came to see me and said she was smiling, it would be a mere杞人忧天, but unfortunately, my intuition screams that this isn’t the case.”
Should I assume something happened based on circumstantial evidence?
After all, she came to rely on me in her pregnant state.
“Haa, you certainly didn’t grow up in a very cute way.”
And the fact that my intuition wasn’t wrong was evident from my mother’s attitude, as she let out a big sigh.
“I would have thought you’d report back after your younger brother or sister was born, saying, ‘They’re born!!'”
“You understand well. Then you can probably guess why I’m here.”
“…Are there many forces trying to secure you?”
Moreover, when she nodded at my question, I felt a sense of “So it’s like I thought.”
“I’m fine in my usual condition, but you know, even I would have trouble escaping in my pregnant state. Considering the worst-case scenario, I decided it was reasonable to seek refuge here. Don’t worry, I brought a souvenir so you can properly hide me.”
“A souvenir?”
The pursuit network that makes even my mother, a master of appearing out of nowhere, unable to escape.
My mother, in her usual state, could probably outwit the agents chasing her with nothing but scorn, but with a baby in her belly, there’s nothing she can do.
Well, to be precise, she probably could, but she wanted to avoid any adverse effects on the baby if she did.
And she even acted with me in mind.
Keiri tilted her head regarding the souvenir.
The luggage my mother and her companions had contained only necessities for survival and some food, along with medicine, disinfectant supplies, and treatment equipment.
“Aren’t you curious about the actions of other countries?”
Then, my mother took out a microchip from a charm from some shrine that she must have kept close to her.
“I’ve put all the information I could get from my information network on here. Well, it should be enough for rent, food, and childbirth expenses.”
She then tossed it towards me without any hesitation, and I caught it.
“I appreciate it, but you know, you didn’t have to do that. You could have just asked for help.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. Even if parents raise their children and children feel indebted to their parents, there are lines that must not be crossed. And to me, parents raise their children because they want them to grow. There may be love, but not obligation. If a child tries to exploit that and expect help without giving anything back, it’s over.”
“…Haa, I understand.”
That’s my mother’s way of thinking.
I felt like she was indirectly telling me to accept it without question, and at this point, she wouldn’t budge. If I rejected it carelessly, she’d probably travel the world while pregnant.
I always knew she didn’t hesitate to stick to her principles, but I never imagined it would be to this extent.
The data I received will be immediately sent to the analysis team.
So, I handed it over to Keiri.
“I’m sorry, but could you transfer this data?”
“Understood.”
With Keiri’s magic power and the magic within this Tufaris, there’s enough magic to allow her to travel back and forth.
She nodded and left the room.
“She’s a good child, isn’t she?”
“Yeah.”
“Oh, so docile.”
“Lately, I’ve learned that denying that would lower Keiri’s value.”
“Japanese people tend to be too humble. That’s a good thing.”
It seems that Keiri and my mother’s first meeting went well.
My mother, for better or worse, says what she thinks clearly.
If Keiri didn’t like her, she would have told me directly.
So, I was happy when she was praised as a good child right off the bat.
“If things continue at this pace, another grandchild will be born next year, I suppose?”
“Bukh!?”
Just as I relaxed and was about to take a sip of coffee, she dropped that comment. She does tend to say a word or two too many.
“How slovenly.”
“It’s your fault for saying strange things.”
“You have multiple wives, so you’re the one to blame. Honestly, where did I go wrong in raising you?”
“At least my hands-off approach shouldn’t have led to this, right?”
“That’s probably true.”
But still, I suppose that’s what family is.
Her chuckling, my tendency to cut things bluntly, and my stubbornness to see things through once I’ve decided.
I intensely feel that I inherited these traits from her.
And I don’t dislike it.
“We don’t know if it’s a brother or sister yet, but I worry about the future. This is a time of change in the world, after all. I hope this child has a world where they can live easily.”
“…I agree.”
“Thanks to someone’s son, this child will also attract attention.”
“We won’t know until they are born, but it’s probably true.”
Such conversations with my mother eventually turned to the topic of the youngest child of the Tanaka family, born into this era of change.
More precisely, it was about what kind of era it would be when the child in my mother’s womb was born.
“A friend of mine earnestly asked me to introduce you. Do you know why?”
“Ah, normally I’d expect it to be about contact with an organization, but judging by your expression, it’s something else. Is it that they want to learn magic?”
With the public announcement of the Demon Lord’s Army, everyone expects magic to become commonplace in the future.
There will probably be licensing or qualification systems, but the government will likely adopt a policy of spreading it as a skill that anyone can acquire.
However, this world doesn’t have the foundation for that to happen immediately.
Decades would be quick; it will probably take over a hundred years for it to fully permeate into the general public.
The story of my mother’s friend fits into the narrative of the youngest child of the Tanaka family, born into this pioneering era.
As I wonder if there’s any connection, I quickly consider it.
“The answer is: ‘Give me your sperm.'”
“Bukh!?”
But it seems my thinking was still too optimistic.
To say something so brazen to my mother, she’s quite the daredevil.
She laughed heartily, watching me spit out my coffee even though I hadn’t been drinking it.
“Don’t worry, they piled up a mountain of cash in front of me, but I flat-out kicked it away and refused.”
“Should I be reassured by that? And why would they want something like that?”
“It seems they predicted that my family line tends to be involved with special worlds, and if they couldn’t secure me, they at least wanted to secure my genes.”
“That’s absurd!”
“This is still the more reasonable option.”
“Eh, this is the more reasonable option?”
“Yes. Would you like to hear from someone more unreasonable? They’re sending love calls to you.”
“I’ve had enough. I’m already completely full of those.”
I had heard an outrageous story. I took another sip of coffee to calm myself and then felt a sense of relief.
What exactly is the relationship between the youngest child of the Tanaka family and this?
“Yes, it’s precisely because we are drawing attention from such extraordinary people. Not Kirie’s side, but my family. That’s why I’m worried about this child.”
I didn’t need to think about it; the connection was obvious.
In a sense, I am now the most famous person on Earth.
The only man who has risen to the rank of an executive in another world’s army while being from Earth.
It’s natural that attention would be drawn to the bloodline of a man so full of話題性.
How dangerous their position is for an infant without any power yet.
“Ah, don’t apologize just because of that. You are where you are as a result of following your own path. I also got pregnant with this child intentionally.”
Understanding that, my mother dismissed the words I was about to say with a flick of her hand.
“Well, as an older brother, you’ll be helping me protect this child.”
“If that’s the case, then there’s no problem. My mansion has many rooms. I can guarantee food, clothing, and shelter.”
“What if I offered to help with your work after childbirth? I believe Ms. Suella invited you to work before, and now that the world has changed like this, I can’t take on any trivial jobs.”
“My mother is going to be my subordinate?”
“What, is there a problem?”
And then she made another outrageous proposal.
“…Mother, how old are you this year?”
“Huh? Fifty-two. Don’t worry, I still have enough stamina to compete with those younger folks.”
“No, that’s not the issue.”
My mother, with an exceptional magic aptitude of ten, becoming a Dungeon Tester.
Although my mother’s prime has long passed, why do I foresee her overpowering any mediocre tester?
“Oh, and just so you know, don’t assign me any weird positions. Even though this is a connection-based hire, I don’t want to be promoted through any strange means just because you’re family.”
“No, I’m not worried about that either.”
Still, how should I tell my mother, who doesn’t seem to grasp my feelings about my own mother becoming my subordinate?
My forces are short-handed, and in a way, she is the most trustworthy talent I could ask for.
The thought of refusing crossed my mind for a moment, but I couldn’t just abandon my mother, who was full of motivation and adhered to her belief that raising children costs money.
“…Haa, let’s see how you recover after childbirth. Is that acceptable?”
“Naturally. Oh, the payment for that data chip earlier was solely for me and this child. Ichiro, you can get work from Jiro as you see fit.”
“What!?”
“Of course.”
Seeing my father, who had been silently fading into the background, finally join the conversation, I decided it was better to accept it if it meant profit.
A word for today:
