The Micchan Channel, which allowed me to experience magic firsthand, was the starting point for interviews from several TV stations and magazines.
Previously, it had been like pushing against a stone wall, a state of futility; however, a sudden turn saw a part of the information being released, stirring up public interest once more.
Although they were selective about who they invited, the fact that they even brought in a film crew from America, not just Japan, made it incredibly newsworthy.
“Thanks to that, my connection with those hijackers has been perfectly denied, hasn’t it?”
“Instead, I’ve remarkably reached my eleventh consecutive day of work.”
The price for all this buzz was the result of making an already busy job even more demanding.
The work content would have undoubtedly left someone without a reinforced body reeling.
However, this robust physique, which didn’t even show signs of such strain, was diligently poring over documents.
“Still, the fact that you sneak off to see your daughter during break times makes you a true devoted husband.”
“I intend to secure time to interact with Keiri as well…”
During work breaks, I met with Suella, Yukiera, and Sachiera: I had Himik bring me lunch, which we ate together; I took a slightly longer break with Memoria under the guise of material planning; I visited Evia to confirm work matters, but also to inquire about her well-being and the children’s growth. I never forgot to interact with them during my work gaps.
Of course, this included Keiri.
Suella and Evia, who had children, were removed from the night rotation, and Keiri joined them.
While we interact then, of course, we also make time outside of work like this to go out for a drink.
Taking breaks is crucial for everything; if you want to work efficiently, you must take high-quality breaks.
“I’m not worried about that. I’m just worried if you’re getting enough rest since you’re so caught up with us.”
The words Keiri had just said to me, as I was thinking that, were not complaints but concerns.
I had expected to be thought of as favoring the children, but instead, she was simply concerned about me not resting.
“I see, thank you. I’m grateful for your constant support with my work.”
“Th-That’s fine! That’s my job, and I do it because I like it.”
“You’re cute even when you’re embarrassed, Keiri.”
“Ah! That’s it! Come on! Work, work! Once this is over, I’ll finally get a holiday!”
I couldn’t be more grateful for her concern.
She seems tsundere, but she’s just being dere, which makes her so cute.
Even when she turns away, I don’t miss the slight blush on her sun-tanned ears.
This ability to glance away at high speed is a privilege made possible by the enhancement of my dynamic vision through my magic crest.
“Ah, on our next day off, how about we all go to a hot spring as a family?”
“…I’ll put in the request.”
“Yeah, please do.”
The dungeon construction was progressing at a rapid pace. The island’s land reclamation was complete, and the foundational work, particularly for defense facilities, was finished. The administrative section was now nearly seventy percent done.
Construction of the defense facilities had already begun. As an initial phase, outer walls were being built encircling the island’s cliffs, and a surveillance network was also being established.
Given that it was being built on an isolated island that was being called a reincarnation of Alcatraz Penitentiary, it wouldn’t be strange for it to be mistaken for a correctional facility.
“I’d like to raise the magic energy concentration enough to install a teleportation circle before working on the port, which can be postponed.”
“If that’s the case, it would be more efficient for Feri to become the Dungeon Core sooner.”
“Unfortunately, the foundation for setting up a dungeon isn’t ready yet, so Feri will have to enjoy her freedom for now regardless.”
Dungeons are considered essential facilities by the Demon Lord’s Army, almost to the level of common sense.
Before creating such a facility, one must first ensure the surrounding safety and make thorough preparations to the point where it cannot be easily attacked.
While island development would undoubtedly advance faster after the dungeon’s creation, if such a vital facility were attacked and fell while the defenses were still incomplete, it would be disastrous, far beyond a matter of responsibility.
“Fortunately, the construction schedule isn’t delayed due to the seajacking. In fact, construction is progressing faster than planned.”
Since Feri began living on this Tufaris, the entire island has been integrated with magic arrays. This prevented magic energy from dissipating, causing the island to absorb more and more magic energy. The magic energy concentration has risen to a level where the Demon Lord’s Army workers can live without auxiliary equipment.
An abundance of magic energy concentration means the use of magic is permitted, and the subsequent work speed is extraordinary.
“As expected of a species expert in craftsmanship.”
Giants are often imagined as muscular, large men based on their appearance, but in reality, their manual dexterity is proven, and they are also knowledgeable about magic in architecture, possessing reliable technical skills in that area.
They are not just meeting the schedule but even starting to get ahead.
“Perhaps they’ve also realized that war is approaching?”
“…That’s part of it too.”
One of the reasons for their high motivation is the unavoidable situation of impending war with Isal.
Evia informed me that the accuracy of information from the intelligence department has been gradually decreasing. However, the Demon Lord’s Army would not leave such a flaw in their intelligence network unaddressed.
They immediately took countermeasures and devised plans to obtain even the slightest bit of information.
The first step in this was the introduction of modern technology.
In essence, they began establishing communication methods that do not rely on magic, such as radios, and started encrypting messages to prevent deciphering by the enemy.
Isal has no such things as electronic devices, nor does it have personnel capable of understanding them.
They seemed to be relying on magic for detection, but electronic devices that don’t use magic cannot be detected.
This is truly an example of the Demon Lord’s Army initiating a modern-day unparalleled strategy.
They’ve also ceased magic-based long-distance scrying, opting for surveillance using telephoto lenses from extremely long distances, along with listening devices, hidden surveillance cameras. It’s as if Hollywood spy thrillers have joined the fantasy movie.
As a result, information began to flow again, conveying the enemy’s war preparations to our side, and the atmosphere has become increasingly tense.
They are acting as if they are at ease.
It could also be said that they are acting more nervously to hide the fact that the Demon Lord’s Army is entering a state of war from the Earth side.
“Supplementing our military strength even slightly. As a general, I have been reassigned, but I am not counted as actual military strength in the current situation.”
There are several reasons for this nervousness, but the main one is the lack of main forces.
While they were squabbling amongst themselves, two general positions have become vacant.
The armies of those two generals remain, but without their commanders, it is questionable whether they can function as proper fighting forces.
“Are you in close contact with Undead King’s wife, Shuri?”
“Yes, I communicate with her both personally and in terms of work. By the way, the President is also concerned. Their forces are among the best in quality and quantity within the Demon Lord’s Army. The President would likely want to keep them within the Demon Lord faction, and count them as a force if necessary.”
However, if one asks if someone who can command them immediately, at a level equal to or at least comparable to before, will appear through some convenient development, if that were the case, I wouldn’t have become a general by now.
“Worst case scenario, I might have to lead Instructor Fushio’s army onto the battlefield.”
However, as a result, I have become a general and decided to participate in the war.
My intention is for this Dungeon to specialize in rear support, but there are no absolutes on the battlefield.
If anything happens, I will be deployed to the front lines.
“Is that why you’re in contact?”
“More than half of it is nosiness. I owe a debt to the instructor. If so, I should at least look after things in his absence.”
“In his absence. You and Lord Oni King don’t believe Lord Undead King is dead, do you?”
“There’s no basis for it. It’s just that I don’t think that person would die so easily.”
The main force candidates for going to the front lines are not my soldiers but Instructor Fushio’s forces, which are a large power floating in the air. This situation is quite troublesome.
Currently, the undead legion is being somewhat held together by Shuri, Instructor Fushio’s wife.
Loyal subordinates of Instructor Fushio are suppressing discontented subordinates, merely maintaining the army’s semblance of unity. However, the army’s function remains.
The nobles wouldn’t just ignore such a highly unbalanced army and are secretly plotting to recruit them.
No, really, I hate this kind of infighting.
Prioritizing their own profit, they deem it no problem as long as they bear the damage themselves.
And then, they use the forces they’ve taken in and discard them, removing any future worries.
To have such a clear plot unfolding before one’s eyes is, in a way, audacious.
However, like counting one’s chickens before they hatch, I’d like to peek into the minds of those nobles already contemplating the post-war situation, or rather, no, it would probably just be a display of grotesque images, so I’ll pass.
Therefore, disrupting such infighting is also part of a general’s job.
Instructor Kio and I are keeping a watchful eye on the nobles, aiming to stabilize Instructor Fushio’s army.
My contribution is only about ten percent; the remaining ninety percent comes from Instructor Kio.
By hinting at my connection with him, I’m indirectly warning them that I’m also involving Queen Kiō, Amili, saying, “If you mess with Fushio’s forces, you’ll have to deal with me.”
If it were just me, I could only deal with it as an individual force.
“You trust him, don’t you?”
“If you ask me, I’d like to know how one could possibly kill him.”
“Hmm, and the other half?”
As I was confirming documents while casually discussing my connection with Instructor Fushio’s faction, I was asked a question.
“If I did nothing, I have a feeling the instructor would beat me up later.”
I could only offer a wry smile and say that.
“Hmm, I see.”
Keiri replied with feigned disinterest, sensing that my words were not entirely false but not the whole truth either.
“You know, you can’t go after married women.”
“Are you telling me to die, Keiri?”
She’s laying down the law in strange places. Even I wouldn’t commit the immoral act of harboring romantic feelings for my teacher’s wife.
“Although I’m building a harem, I think I’m careful about choosing the women I target.”
“But there was a drama once where a young man came to take care of a widowed woman who was grieving her deceased husband.”
“Don’t mix fiction with reality. Besides, Shuri is devoted only to the instructor.”
I lightly tapped Keiri’s head with a document as she made a joke with a clearly teasing smile. She let out a cute groan.
“Nothing good comes from meddling with other people’s women. I’ve seen lines like realizing true love in some shōjo manga’s Cinderella stories, but from an outsider’s perspective, it’s infidelity and dishonest behavior.”
“Jiro, you’re surprisingly realistic about some things. Yet, when you get passionate, you’re driven by sheer excitement. Like with the seajacking incident, you took a defiant stance and implemented various measures beyond just dealing with the media.”
“Drawing a line is important.”
Perhaps it’s because I spend my work time with her that I don’t get tired, in a way.
