Chapter 377: Madam, there is a letter for you (3k)
Above the towns north of Aers, a golden sword light cut through the sky, releasing a majestic aura, causing the white clouds to dissipate into rain.
However, this also caught the attention of many city guards and civilians. But due to the overwhelming power of the aura, they did not intervene. Finally, the sword energy stopped above a quiet alley and transformed into an ethereal shadow, from which two figures descended, landing steadily within the alley.
“Dila City is just a small city, yet it’s more vibrant than the international cities. Jialuo’s wife seems to live here.”
Emerging from the alley, chewing on a magic crystal to replenish energy, Su Jiu scanned her surroundings. She noticed many fearful eyes looking their way but paid them no mind. Instead, she surveyed the city, untouched by war, with a touch of emotion.
The bleak winter sunlight illuminated the streets and alleys. The distant calls of vendors, the steaming hot food and pastries from stalls, and the rising plumes of smoke created a sense of bustling life. Although the crowd was more cautious due to her presence, most continued with their daily activities.
It gave a feeling of worldly bustle.
“It’s not that far, yet I can feel the winter’s breath here.”
Standing behind Su Jiu, Bairnis’s sapphire-blue eyes also scanned the crowd. She gently exhaled a puff of white breath. Since awakening, she hadn’t experienced such a peaceful life. All she had seen were the scars of war and refugees forced to leave their homes…
Miss has also been very busy. Perhaps she doesn’t feel tired, but I feel a strange sense of concern for her.
When they were in the sky, they also saw refugees flocking this way, but most were from nearby cities. Although several hundred kilometers were not far for Su Jiu and her companions, for ordinary people, the monsters on the road would be enough to tear them apart.
Fleeting thoughts crossed Bairnis’s mind. She looked again at the graceful figure in front of her, seeing the relaxed expression on her face, and a faint smile bloomed on her own.
“Miss, let’s hurry and deliver this letter to Jialuo! If we have time, we can also eat some pastries and find an inn for a hot bath and a good sleep.”
As if gathering courage, she took a couple of steps forward, whispered softly, and then grabbed Su Jiu’s hand. To Su Jiu’s surprised expression, she led the way towards the center of the market.
On the main street, the sounds of vendors and shouts continuously entered their ears. On both sides of the street, shops of various sizes stood in neat rows, and there were even some pastry shops.
Before long, they were holding many local snacks and fruits, which were placed into a storage bag. It was a rare moment of leisure.
Under the sun, which offered no warmth, they found a shop owner and asked for directions. “Excuse me, where does Miss Lu Si, the priest at the church, live? We have something to give her.”
The owner looked at Su Jiu and the other with slight surprise, his gaze sweeping over Su Jiu’s storage ring. His sharp merchant instincts told him that the young lady before him was a significant figure to be treated with utmost respect. He quickly replied, “Pastor Lu Si? After bidding farewell to a Mokala senior commander, she said she was going to the northern city borders to jointly resist demon invasion…”
After a pause, the shop owner pointed to the street on the right and said with a smile, “You can also try going to her house. Perhaps she’s returned. Turn right here and go up a slope. The one with the ivy growing on it is her house.”
“Thank you.”
After thanking him, Su Jiu walked towards the given address, passing through various stalls, savoring this moment of peace.
As the sun gradually set, Bairnis walked behind Su Jiu, sipping a cup of milk tea. Her gaze fell on Su Jiu’s slender, fair wrist. She bit down on the straw, reached for the inner side of her arm, and then slowly put it down.
She was merely Miss’s knight. Making such a gesture on the street might not be appropriate.
Thinking this, Bairnis secretly glanced at Su Jiu, but her eyes met hers. She quickly picked up a pastry and offered it to her, her lips curving into a slight smile. “Miss, try this. It has chestnuts inside, and it’s crispy…”
“Mmm… so sweet.”
Before she could finish, Su Jiu suddenly leaned down and took a bite of the small pastry. Under Bairnis’s gaze, she swallowed and then turned, smiling, and slung her arm around Bairnis’s wrist, chuckling, “Let’s go, don’t just stand there daydreaming.”
Looking at Su Jiu’s retreating back, Bairnis’s gaze shifted back to her arm. She could feel their cool skin touching, slightly warm.
After a brief moment of surprise, her lips couldn’t help but curl upwards slightly. She followed Su Jiu, softly saying, “Miss, you took such a big bite, of course it’s sweet… When we get home, I’ll make you the pastries from our era.”
“Okay.”
Su Jiu smiled and agreed. The two walked up the rather steep, staircase-like slope. On the slope, Su Jiu narrowed her eyes, gazing into the distance through the thin sunlight.
Her gaze finally landed on a small house covered in plants in the distance. Seeing the ivy that had grown over the doorway, her heart sank slightly. It seemed this place had been abandoned for quite some time…
They slowly went down the small slope and knocked on the door for a while, but no one responded. Su Jiu also used her mental power to sense the area and found it indeed empty.
“It seems Madam Lu Si is also a busy person. We’ll have to go to the northern city borders to check.”
After exchanging a glance, Su Jiu gave a wry smile and looked into the distance. She then put her arm around Bairnis’s waist and flew away as a golden stream of light on her sword.
“The Frostmist is so dense. I fear a great demon has descended to the north. Most of Aers’ forces are likely deployed to resist Yela’s invasion. This journey will be perilous.”
On the sword, Su Jiu looked at the vast expanse of frost and snow in the distance, her eyes narrowing. It seemed that with the approach of the harsh winter, the demons in the Northern Hemisphere were not at rest, and it wasn’t just the Bear of the Snow region that was experiencing problems.
In Su Jiu’s embrace, Bairnis’s lips curved, then flattened, before transforming into a butterfly bracelet on Su Jiu’s hand, emitting a faint glow, conveying a sense of warmth.
Miss’s embrace was warm, but now it was time for battle, and she was like Miss’s sword.
A sword should stand in front of its master.
…
In the northern part of Aers, the main battlefield of the demon war, in a hall atop a towering city wall, several figures sat with a somber atmosphere.
“Currently, I am the only Battle King in the fortress. The main forces have been jointly moved south with other countries’ troops to counter Yela. How should we resist the sudden attacks of the [Snow Hunger Beast]?”
Below the hall, an old man in ragged clothes sighed and spoke first. The blue-green armband on his arm, without fail, indicated his identity – Mokala.
“Deputy Commander, can’t we ask the main forces to temporarily dispatch two Battle Kings for support? According to scout reports, the [Snow Hunger Beast] is advancing aggressively, with several King-Class Demons appearing.” A man in a black military uniform suddenly stood up and asked with great solemnity.
“There’s no time—”
The wooden door of the hall was opened, and a woman in a priest’s uniform with many pockets walked in. She looked somewhat tired, but it was clear she was beautiful in her youth. After taking a sip of energy liquid from her waist, she wiped her mouth and said breathlessly, “The [Snow Hunger Beasts] have launched a full-scale attack. Battle King-level demons have appeared. The front line only has two Half-King powerhouses, who cannot hold them back. Our soldiers are suffering heavy casualties!”
Following behind her was a girl, about ten years old, half her height, with sky-blue eyes, similar in size to Su Jiu’s, and very beautiful.
She seemed familiar with the situation in the hall, and the guards did not stop her, letting her spin around on a chair.
“Grandpa Akas, don’t worry. My dad will be back soon. And I’ll become a Mokala like you all and fight bad guys!” The half-height girl happily skipped up and patted the old man’s back, speaking with a smile.
Her father was a Battle King-level swordsman, and he should be back soon from the mission of picking up refugees.
Lu Si seemed to notice her daughter wandering around, her expression darkening. She grabbed her daughter’s arm, leaned down slightly, and whispered into her head, “Don’t be naughty. How does your father usually teach you! This is a meeting for adults!”
“Your father…” The old man was slightly stunned. He looked at the girl and seemed about to say something, but finally turned his head and sighed helplessly in the direction of the meeting.
“Alas, we can only retreat further and try to seek help from the international community. For fighting demons, I believe those major countries will respond to our request.”
Those people, including Lu Si who had just entered, fell into silence. This was the best course of action for now. The girl, somewhat displeased, swung her hand in Lu Si’s grasp and mumbled, “I won’t follow you to be a priest later. I want to be a warrior who can kill enemies on the battlefield like my father.”
“You…” Hearing the girl’s voice, Lu Si was also choked with anger. Just as she was about to say something, a commotion erupted from outside, as if guards were blocking someone— “You can’t go in! There’s a meeting in progress.”
“I’m looking for Madam Lu Si. I have something very important to give her.” A clear, refreshing female voice rang out.
The people in the hall exchanged glances, their gazes finally resting on Lu Si. The old man waved his hand at her and said with a wry smile, “Lu Si, go and see. Perhaps it’s some useful supplies.”
“For me?”
Lu Si walked out somewhat bewildered. Upon reaching the doorway, she found a young girl, dressed in a way that seemed out of season, arguing with the guards. However, the girl’s face did not show the petulance of a spoiled child; instead, it exuded a subtle sense of composure.
“Head Nurse…”
When the guards saw Lu Si approaching, they quickly lowered their heads and parted, stepping back two meters on either side, their gazes still warily fixed on Su Jiu, preventing any transgression.
Without much hesitation, Lu Si looked at the young girl with her Eastern features and directly asked, “May I ask what you need me for? By rights, the medical resources and supplies provided by the Dragon Country wouldn’t be sent here…”
“Not exactly.”
Waving her hand, Su Jiu looked at the frail female priest before her, a hint of inexplicable sadness in her eyes. She then took out the blood-stained letter from her ring and gently handed it over.
“Madam, there is a letter for you.”
