Chapter 36: A Melancholy Road to School
Returning to Leng Qing Qiu’s bedroom, Lu Zhiyin didn’t rush to change her clothes.
She first found some tissues and covered the wound on her palm with them before opening Leng Qing Qiu’s wardrobe.
Not daring to rummage through Leng Qing Qiu’s belongings, Lu Zhiyin casually picked out a pair of light blue jeans, not even caring if they matched her top.
After all, her fashion sense was never great, and she wouldn’t be going out alone in this state, so wearing anything was fine.
Changing out of her soaked pants, Lu Zhiyin took the wet trousers back to the kitchen.
Putting the pants into the washing machine, Lu Zhiyin quietly watched Leng Qing Qiu standing by the stove.
Leng Qing Qiu was stir-frying something with a frying pan in one hand and a spatula in the other, her movements much steadier than Lu Zhiyin’s.
Before long, Leng Qing Qiu finished preparing breakfast. She took a bowl from the cabinet, scooped the food from the pan into it, then turned around and handed the bowl and a spoon to Lu Zhiyin.
Mm… she had already known Lu Zhiyin had come up behind her from the sound of the wheelchair.
What she handed Lu Zhiyin was a bowl of egg fried rice, the grains of rice clearly separated and coated in a golden hue from the eggs, making it look very appetizing.
Leng Qing Qiu was probably very good at cooking, at least better than Lu Zhiyin.
“Let’s eat outside. Be careful not to spill it again.”
While starting to boil water, Leng Qing Qiu instructed Lu Zhiyin, her gaze falling on the tissue Lu Zhiyin was using to cover her wound, but Leng Qing Qiu pretended not to see it.
“Mm… it won’t happen again…”
Feeling somewhat embarrassed, Lu Zhiyin placed the bowl on her lap and maneuvered her wheelchair out.
By the time Lu Zhiyin finished eating, Leng Qing Qiu happened to bring out a cup of hot water, also holding medicine.
“Take your medicine, and then I’m going to school. You rest well at home and don’t go out by yourself.”
She placed the medicine she had taken twice yesterday on the table and quietly stared at Lu Zhiyin.
Lu Zhiyin looked out the window. Sometime ago, the sky outside had begun to brighten. It was a bit early to go to school now, but considering Leng Qing Qiu’s excellent grades, it didn’t seem completely unreasonable.
Pulling her gaze back, the white-haired girl, returning to her senses, obediently took the fever-reducing medicine, even though her illness was mostly gone.
After personally watching Lu Zhiyin take the medicine, Leng Qing Qiu casually tidied her school bag, adjusted her appearance, put on her bag, and prepared to leave.
“Wait…”
As Leng Qing Qiu opened the door and prepared to leave, Lu Zhiyin called out to her.
“Mm, what is it? Zhiyin.”
Leng Qing Qiu stopped and turned to look at Lu Zhiyin.
“It’s just… um… could you bring back some bandages…”
Feeling a bit embarrassed to ask Leng Qing Qiu for more favors, as she had already helped her so much, Lu Zhiyin really needed bandages.
Without bandages, the wounds on her body that were not yet fully stable could easily reopen. She had just experienced this not long ago, and her palms were still wrapped with tissues.
“Eh? You need bandages?”
Tilting her head, Leng Qing Qiu had a slight smile on her face.
Lu Zhiyin couldn’t understand why Leng Qing Qiu was smiling, but she still nodded.
“Yes, you can.”
“Thank you… thank you so much.”
Before Leng Qing Qiu could finish her next sentence, Lu Zhiyin began to express her gratitude.
Leng Qing Qiu was truly kind to her, she thought. She must be considered lucky? To have received such preferential treatment from the serial killer in this game in such a muddled way.
Just as she was about to smile, Leng Qing Qiu’s next words stunned her.
“However, Zhiyin will have to pay. Not just for the bandages, but also for the fever reducer I gave you earlier.”
Looking at Lu Zhiyin, Leng Qing Qiu continued to smile.
“I’m not very well-off, so I can’t offer help for free. Please forgive me.”
This statement wasn’t entirely accurate. Leng Qing Qiu didn’t actually lack money; she just wanted to tie Lu Zhiyin down with financial matters.
She wasn’t good at understanding people’s hearts and was always worried about Lu Zhiyin. She had to use something that she could think of that wasn’t excessive to bind Lu Zhiyin.
“Ah… I, I understand. I will pay. Please don’t forget to bring me bandages.”
Looking at her palm, Lu Zhiyin thought for a moment and ultimately did not go back on her word.
Although her family didn’t have much money, and paying for the medicine would sting, this money was rightfully hers. Lu Zhiyin knew very well that she had no right to expect others to help her unconditionally.
“Mm, I will bring Zhiyin the things she wants.”
Nodding, Leng Qing Qiu left the room and closed the door.
She felt a sense of satisfaction. This was just the beginning. She knew Lu Zhiyin’s life was difficult and that she didn’t have much money. This time, she could afford the medicine, but what about other things next time? Would she only be able to owe her?
From now on, Leng Qing Qiu would find ways to make Lu Zhiyin owe her more money.
She could choose not to ask for it, but Lu Zhiyin couldn’t avoid owing her. Only this way could she feel slightly more at ease.
Honestly, Leng Qing Qiu felt she was a freak herself.
The scene from yesterday, where Long Qinxin put a band-aid on Lu Zhiyin, flashed through her mind again.
She touched her chest.
“I’m just afraid of being betrayed.”
Whispering to herself, Leng Qing Qiu gave a silent, slight laugh.
She began to ponder how to make Lu Zhiyin owe her more money.
Anyway, as long as Lu Zhiyin didn’t betray her, she wouldn’t ask for the debt. As long as her childhood friend behaved herself, then everything she gave her would be like a gift, which was also a way of treating her well, wasn’t it?
“Remember, she always seemed to be talking about phones. I’ll buy her one this afternoon.”
Whispering to herself again, Leng Qing Qiu set off for school.
The street was somewhat deserted. She had experienced such a scene countless times before, but for some reason, today she felt a sense of melancholy.
Was it because of Lu Zhiyin? Even though she had only gone to school with Lu Zhiyin a few times, and they barely spoke on the way.
Walking alone on the quiet road to school, Leng Qing Qiu stopped at the usual breakfast shop as always.
She bought a pancake as usual. If Lu Zhiyin were going to school with her, her childhood friend would likely be watching her with longing eyes right now. However, with Lu Zhiyin not by her side, she couldn’t see that interesting envious look.
Shaking her head, Leng Qing Qiu entered the school while munching on the pancake.
As expected, she was among the first to arrive at school. There were no other students in the classroom, only herself.
Taking out Lu Zhiyin’s school bag from Lu Zhiyin’s desk, Leng Qing Qiu found Lu Zhiyin’s house key.
“…Perhaps, I should get a duplicate made without her knowing.”
Looking at the key in her hand, Leng Qing Qiu’s eyes flickered.
