Chapter 26: Is it okay to have an axe for self-defense?
“Holy crap…”
The Masked Murderer clutched his ears in pain.
“Dude, am I that scary?”
This person was Liu Haoyu, and he couldn’t understand it at all.
He wasn’t exactly the most handsome guy, but he shouldn’t be mistaken for a ghost, right?
“Ghost… ghost…”
Hearing the pitiful voice, Liu Haoyu could only take off his mask and shake the blood off his axe.
“Look closely, I’m not a ghost, I’m a human, a good person.”
“Who… what kind of good person carries an axe like this?”
“When you’re out and about, is there anything wrong with a boy carrying an axe for self-defense?”
“…”
Shirley Lai was speechless. Still shaken, she patted her chest and struggled to stand up, leaning against the wall.
Her legs were trembling, and she truly looked terrified.
“So you are Shirley Lai?”
“Yes…”
“That’s good, I went to your house and couldn’t find you, I thought you were dead.”
The Masked Murderer walked over to the old man’s corpse, then took out a bottle of talismanic water and poured it on the body.
“What are you doing?”
“What else can I do?” The Masked Murderer shrugged and said, “Destroying the evidence, isn’t that a common scene in movies?”
The man seemed to be making a grim joke, but as Shirley Lai watched his proficient movements…
She was sure he had done this kind of thing many times.
Shirley Lai silently took two steps back.
“What is he?”
“A ghoul, here to kill you.”
Hearing the voice, Shirley Lai realized it sounded exactly like the ghost from before.
So, the young girl couldn’t help but ask.
“You are Liu Haoyu, right?”
“Yes, you’re not as foolish as I thought you were.”
Liu Haoyu said nonchalantly, but with just that sentence, Shirley Lai’s face turned red, and she somewhat indignantly replied.
“I’m not foolish, okay?”
“Then why would you follow someone you’ve never met into a place like this?”
Hearing Liu Haoyu’s words, Shirley Lai was speechless.
“Even if you didn’t encounter a ghost, isn’t it a stupid thing to follow a stranger into an deserted alley?”
“That… that’s because…”
Shirley Lai’s face turned red as she tried to retort, but after a long pause, she couldn’t find any reason.
Liu Haoyu didn’t pay much attention to her thoughts and continued pouring the talismanic water onto the old man’s corpse. Soon, the corpse began to dissolve rapidly.
This was not really a human corpse; he had been dead for several days.
Then he was turned into a ghoul by Gu Qianyang, used to find a way to kill Shirley Lai.
However, it was unclear why that person wanted to kill Shirley Lai.
Did this young girl have some unknown secret?
The black book didn’t explain clearly either, so Liu Haoyu was completely bewildered.
But no matter what, in supernatural events, saving people was the top priority.
Even if Shirley Lai was just an innocent bystander, Liu Haoyu had to save her.
“Is he dead?”
“He died days ago, at home, and no one found him. If you don’t believe me, you can go next door to your house, and you should be able to see his corpse lying on the bed.”
“No, thank you.”
Shirley Lai, already scared and suspicious, had no interest in the so-called old man’s corpse.
She just wanted to live safely for now.
“Also, didn’t I tell you to stay in the room?”
Liu Haoyu said to Shirley Lai after dealing with the ghoul.
“Why did you run out in the middle of the night?”
Shirley Lai said with tears almost welling up.
“You told me to stay in the room, but there’s a ghost in the room too!”
“Oh? Another ghost?”
Liu Haoyu’s interest was instantly piqued. He adjusted his gas mask.
“Could it be that I missed something?”
“It’s in my room.”
“You mean the room with the computer in it?”
“Yes.”
“But I didn’t see any traces of a ghost inside…”
Before Liu Haoyu could finish, the girl immediately retorted.
“Impossible! There must be!”
“Alright, then I’ll check again.”
The Masked Murderer said, and then walked forward on his own.
Shirley Lai was left alone, not knowing whether to go or stay.
The cold night wind blew through the narrow alley, and the chill made the girl’s heart feel uneasy.
Moreover, since only one ghost had died, she felt as if her surroundings were being watched by something.
More importantly, because she had encountered a ghost in an internet cafe before, she now understood that even crowded places might not be very safe.
After thinking it over, she looked at the back of the Masked Murderer as he left and shouted.
“Wait for me!!”
—————
Along the way, Liu Haoyu felt a sense of helplessness about the little follower behind him.
His gaze shifted to the girl beside him—Qin Liu.
She had been here from the beginning.
However, this little ghost rarely spoke when outsiders were present.
She had a bit of social anxiety.
“Shrimp Head,” Qin Liu said weakly, “Aren’t you going to do something about the person following us?”
Since the two had become a couple, calling each other by name would have felt a bit distant.
And Qin Liu’s smart little brain quickly came up with a pet name for Liu Haoyu.
Yes, it was Shrimp Head.
Hearing this nickname, Liu Haoyu’s mouth twitched.
It was clear that he didn’t like the nickname very much.
“I would like to, but why don’t you take a look.”
Liu Haoyu pointed to the woman who was anxiously standing at the door of her house.
“Her mother is still there, what else can I do?”
Qin Liu looked in the direction Liu Haoyu was pointing. She saw a woman in a plaid shirt standing in front of Shirley Lai’s house, holding her mobile phone and constantly making calls, seemingly looking for Shirley Lai.
“Mom?” the girl trailing behind Liu Haoyu asked when she saw the woman at the doorway, “Weren’t you playing mahjong? Why are you back all of a sudden?”
Hearing Shirley Lai’s voice, Mom Lai immediately turned her head. She first saw Liu Haoyu, and then she saw Shirley Lai following behind Liu Haoyu.
“Where did you go in the middle of the night? I couldn’t get through on the phone!”
“Huh?”
Upon hearing this, Shirley Lai took out her mobile phone from her pocket.
But it seemed that because of the fall she had just taken, her phone was broken, so she naturally couldn’t answer calls.
“This… my phone is broken.”
Shirley Lai showed the phone to Mom Lai. Seeing the cracked screen, Mom Lai immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
“It’s okay, as long as you’re alright, that’s all that matters…”
Because she couldn’t get through earlier, and combined with Shirley Lai’s previous call, Mom Lai, after finishing a round of mahjong, naturally rushed to Shirley Lai’s bedroom.
When she found the room empty, and the talismans and mirror gone, she realized that something was really wrong.
