Chapter 16 Night
“So this is basically a combination of a dad who’s bad with words and a rebellious, distant teenage girl!!”
Su Jun couldn’t help but exclaim as he stir-fried the food in the wok.
To think that the tense meeting would result in this. He had to admit that the chuunibyou thoughts of the teenage girl had given him a lot of misinformation.
This peculiar way of interacting was nothing like a menacing yakuza member coercing and enticing a minor to work for him! Su Jun only saw a middle-aged boss who appeared cold on the surface but secretly cared for his daughter.
“But thinking about it, it’s not wrong. After all, my ability isn’t anything worth their coveting.”
Stir-frying the half-cooked meat slices in the wok, Su Jun skillfully added the pre-cut green peppers, adjusted the heat slightly, and continued with his cooking.
Regarding this, Su Jun had doubts from the moment he received the memories. This ability of hers was truly mediocre, a typical trait of a late bloomer. Even Mr. Qi’s reason for bringing him into the organization felt a bit flimsy.
After personally experiencing Mr. Qi’s abilities, Su Jun’s doubts grew even stronger. With the ability to move within shadows that was only slightly revealed, it seemed much more suited for assassinations or stealing items!
Why would he go through the trouble of using her ability to transport items?
Perhaps it might be useful for items that were too large to be carried with shadow abilities, but such situations were rare. Moreover, the few missions in his memory, like this one, seemed like child’s play.
[It must be to support my schooling in a more decent way…]
He transferred the stir-fried peppers and meat into his lunchbox, which was as black as an urn. Su Jun wondered what the girl had gone through, as her daily necessities were so bizarre.
Then, he set the rice cooker to keep warm until tomorrow morning and placed the small lunchbox along with the previously cooked vegetables into the upper compartment. This way, they could all stay warm until tomorrow morning.
Wiping his slightly numb arm from stir-frying for a long time, Su Jun cleaned up the kitchen waste, turned off the lights, and walked into his room.
As a programmer who had been single and self-sufficient for years, Su Jun surprisingly had decent cooking skills. It was probably a result of his mother’s laissez-faire approach when he was a child. If he didn’t work hard to cook for himself, he would only have to eat his father’s negatively charged Cthulhu-esque food.
However, the original owner, Kazumi Shimizu, didn’t seem to pay much attention to cooking. The rice cooker was only used to cook rice or make rice balls. For other staple foods, she usually relied on convenience foods. It was no wonder she had grown up so thin and small.
The thick paper package on the table lay there quietly. The light reflected on the glass, and he could see its shadow. Su Jun walked over, picked up the paper package, and counted. It was roughly three months’ worth of living expenses. However, as Mr. Qi had told him, the amount this time was significantly more than usual, intended for Su Jun’s other purposes.
“What do you mean, ‘don’t let boys pay directly’! Is this person secretly investigating me?!”
After hiding the paper package in the small cabinet by the bedside, Su Jun remembered Mr. Qi’s last words and couldn’t help but complain.
“And can’t you just transfer it directly? Why do you have to deliver the living expenses in such a mafia-like way…”
Lying in bed, Su Jun dangled his legs, complaining about his boss, who was also like a father figure.
“I wonder if they were friends of my parents, or if they simply developed feelings from taking care of me?”
One had to admit that the organization called [Shadow] had its reasons for being the most powerful mysterious organization in the underworld. The support provided for the children of deceased members was far superior to many Fortune 500 companies on the market.
Well, it’s also possible that Su Jun’s parents were important members of the organization, or that Mr. Qi was their friend. But none of that mattered. What mattered was that Su Jun and the largest dark organization in neon seemed to have a close relationship!!
“They wouldn’t drag me into this, would they?”
Su Jun rolled over, got out of bed, and sat down at the table, casually picking up a book and opening it.
Given Mr. Qi’s current attitude towards him, he probably didn’t intend to drag him into this dark organization. After all, as long as Kazumi Shimizu didn’t strongly demand to know the real circumstances of her parents’ deaths, Mr. Qi had always introduced himself as Mr. Fukada, a colleague of the Shimizu couple’s research institute, and only stated that Kazumi Shimizu’s parents died in a research accident.
Furthermore, not even having a formal organization member title, only a serial number, meant he was an extremely peripheral figure who wouldn’t be implicated too much if something happened.
Moreover, Mr. Qi’s reason for arranging Kazumi Shimizu under his command, besides using it as an excuse to support her schooling, was also to keep an eye on her and prevent the rebellious teenager from doing anything foolish for her parents.
“But they probably won’t do anything like that.”
Casually looking at the book, Su Jun’s instincts took over, and he picked up a pen from the side, starting to make annotations and notes in the book. However, neither the original Kazumi Shimizu nor the current Su Jun would do anything foolish that Mr. Qi might worry about.
After all, the real culprit behind Kazumi Shimizu’s parents’ death was… the Heroes Association!!!
Beggars can’t be choosers, Su Jun decided to just read his book. After awakening the ability called [Black Coffin], the time he needed for sleep was gradually decreasing. Currently, he probably only needed about 4 hours of sleep to maintain the mental state required for normal physiological activities.
This was also the reason why the original owner, Kazumi Shimizu, was able to get into Shikoku High School, the most famous high school in the country, through her own efforts. Both effort and talent were indispensable.
While reviewing the “Records of Flame-Type Hero Abilities,” which he had already read several times, Su Jun began to silently ponder the issue of the territory panel he had seen earlier.
Unlike in a game, many things on Su Jun’s panel were directly deleted. Both the beginner’s materials and the pre-installed buildings were completely clean, leaving only a basic ability called [Death Pioneer].
However, unlike the fertile soil in the game that provided energy points, Su Jun, who now only had a bare coffin, faced a big problem.
“Where can I get this so-called Death Aura?”
