Chapter 493: I Really Should Die
“Mhm.”
“Everything I’ve said is the truth.”
Satō (Sato) Shin’ichi, who already felt guilty, had a flicker of panic in his eyes. Nevertheless, he steel his nerves and explained.
“If it were as simple as you say, then based on my understanding of you, you wouldn’t have been lost in thought so many times on the way here.”
Looking at the fool-like expression on Satō Shin’ichi’s face as he stubbornly refused to admit fault, Kazumi stated her guess in a cold, calm tone.
Kazumi’s answer was reasonable, leaving Satō Shin’ichi no room to refute. He opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but under the girl’s cold, emotionless gaze, he found himself unable to utter any explanation.
Honestly, Satō Shin’ichi regretted it a little. This matter shouldn’t have been too serious. As long as he could explain the cause and effect clearly to Kazumi, based on his understanding of his girlfriend, he would surely gain her understanding.
However, this matter was still too explosive for the fifteen-year-old young boy. An attractive female friend in all aspects, who made it difficult to refuse her request that he marry her. Although Satō Shin’ichi firmly refused the offer with his inner feelings, in his opinion, such a matter was an absolute super-explosive event that absolutely could not be mentioned to his girlfriend.
Unfortunately, he was the type who couldn’t keep secrets, especially not from Kazumi. And for such a matter, if he actively confessed and revealed everything, it would be a completely different situation than if she saw through it. He couldn’t bear the consequences of that.
“Forget it, forget it. I’ll say it when I feel like it.”
As Satō Shin’ichi’s mind raced, racking his brain to find a way to resolve the current crisis, a low sigh, accompanied by a shift back to a normal tone, sounded in the young boy’s ears.
Snapping back to reality, Satō Shin’ichi looked up and found that his girlfriend had given up questioning him and was slowly walking forward.
“Eh, Kazumi.”
The young boy jogged a couple of steps to catch up with his girlfriend’s pace and was surprised to find that the frighteningly cold expression on Kazumi’s face had disappeared. She had returned to her usual soft and cute appearance, even taking out snacks from her pocket and eating them as if nothing had happened.
“Are… are you still angry?”
The drastic shift in his girlfriend’s demeanor left Satō Shin’ichi a little bewildered. He assumed it was just some new way of acting out. Carefully, he tugged at Kazumi’s clothes, lowering his head and softly asking, like a Siberian Husky trying to apologize to its owner after wrecking the house.
“A little, but it’s not important.” Kazumi looked at Satō Shin’ichi beside her with a peculiar expression and nodded, handing him the snack in her hand. It smoothly landed in the mouth of someone whose heart was still pounding nervously.
“Then you’re not going to ask me about this matter anymore?” The taste of the potato chips spread in his mouth. Everything that was happening now still felt somewhat unreal to Satō Shin’ichi, and he couldn’t help but continue to ask.
“I’m not asking anymore, not asking anymore. Do you remember what I told you before? Even the closest couples should maintain a certain amount of personal space. We are all independent individuals. I don’t want you to become a puppet attached to me for everything. This matter, knowing the general idea is enough. If you don’t want to tell me, you must have your reasons, or at least you’re willing to explain as much as you can. That in itself is a great trust. Besides, you’ve explained your point of view. I still believe you.”
“What my grandfather and I guessed is either private information that classmate Shimiya is not convenient to make public, or classmate Shimiya explicitly told you it’s not convenient for a third party to know. I don’t want to put you in a difficult position.” Kazumi casually threw the snack wrapper into the nearby trash can, wiped her hands with a tissue, and said calmly.
Although her possessiveness towards the “silly dog” beside her reached a somewhat frightening level, at least her rationality was online daily. Usually, she could feign acting spoiled to achieve her goals, but if you really wanted Kazumi to act like Grandpa Sato and throw a tantrum that she herself found meaningless, Kazumi truly couldn’t do it. Moreover, Satō Shin’ichi’s silly dog face and his internal thoughts made it easy for Kazumi to guess most of what was going on. From the perspective of an adult like Kazumi, these so-called “little secrets” that these brats thought were world-ending weren’t a big deal. So, she was too lazy to waste too much emotion on these matters.
“I haven’t finished yet.” Moving again to bat away his outstretched, touched hand, Kazumi smiled and continued. “The reason I’m angry isn’t because you’re hiding something from me, but because your subconscious attempt to hide things, your intention to cheat on me. Satō Shin’ichi, you’re even lying to me now.”
“As a punishment, you’re not allowed to touch my hand for a week.”
Listening to his girlfriend, who was earnestly reasoning with him, and the punishment she decreed for the next week, Satō Shin’ichi truly didn’t know how to describe his current feelings. He really should die! He had such a kind and wonderful girlfriend who was willing to think for him, yet he was still contemplating hiding things from her. Even if subjectively he didn’t intend to do so, the subconscious action was his problem. Even being torn to pieces wouldn’t make up for the girl’s trust in him. Although the punishment he had spoken of, which was a feigned anger, was just a minor jest that wouldn’t cause any real harm, and given Kazumi’s tolerance towards him, it certainly wouldn’t be as strict as she said.
Thinking this, the young boy’s eyes reddened slightly. Disregarding the punishment the girl had mentioned earlier, he leaned in front of Kazumi and said earnestly.
“Kazumi, it was my fault. There’s nothing difficult to say about this matter. Actually…”
“So, because of a family change, classmate Shimiya is to be married to someone she completely dislikes. This is also why she went to Grandpa Sato.” Kazumi nodded slightly, summarizing Satō Shin’ichi’s earlier agitated words. Although it was slightly different from her previous guess, it was definitely because Shimiya Mai didn’t want others to see her painful experiences that she told him not to tell anyone and to keep it a secret. This was understandable.
“Mainly, this matter sounds like a dramatic twist. It’s quite satisfying to hear it said like this!”
“I know, I know. Then, what did she say to you in the end?” Kazumi shrugged indifferently. Such things as “family fate” were often seen in movies and novels, and Kazumi wasn’t interested in caring whether someone she disliked lived well or not. Bored, she casually responded, intending to end this unilluminating conversation.
“Uh…” Kazumi’s words made Satō Shin’ichi pause his narration. After hesitating for a few moments, he spoke somewhat uncertainly. “She said she wants me to marry her.”
“Whoosh!” The young boy felt a gust of wind pass by his ear. Before his physical self-preservation mechanism could even react, he found a cold, hard object pressed against his neck. Slowly raising his head, he saw a phantom behind the girl, emanating visible black aura like a ferocious beast, and words spitting out from between her teeth, filled with killing intent.
“And then – what!?”
(PS: I feel like the female lead has a bit of a split personality QAQ)
