It seems they reached a compromise, considering those points, and decided to appoint me as the head of the Slayer first.

“It’s through these struggles that we find our own answers. You, too, can search for your own ‘ideal form of Captain’ moving forward. Just as the previous Captains probably did…”
“Hmm, but it just doesn’t feel like me.”
“Then, shall we test whether you have the makings to stand above us?”
“A test?”
“The test will be—”
The smile on Ashe’s lips shifted into something with a hint of mischief.
A shiver ran inexplicably down my spine.
“You must embrace both Veronica and me, Abel. If you satisfy us, you’ll pass.”
“What? Huh? What are you suddenly talking about!?”
I was stunned by Ashe’s abrupt proposal.
“And, as a sort of pre-celebration for your promotion to Captain, what do you think?”
She said it playfully, but her eyes weren’t smiling.
“W-wait, am I going to be embraced by him too!?”
“Oh, Veronica, it’s been a while for you too, hasn’t it? It’s a good opportunity, so let’s have Abel take good care of us together, shall we?”
Ashe said with a mischievous grin.
“If you’re not inclined, I’ll just enjoy myself alone.”
“You’re not just trying to satisfy your own lust, are you?”
Veronica said, glaring.
“Fufu, of course, I’m being considerate so that Abel can fully embrace it. Though, naturally, I also want to be embraced by him after so long.”
“That’s quite direct…”
“If we hesitate, the other girls will monopolize him.”
Ashe retorted to Veronica’s snort with a cool expression.
Then, a fleeting shadow of melancholy crossed her face.
“I am a woman, after all. I can’t be devoid of jealousy. Or the natural desire to be held by the one you love.”
Hearing Ashe openly confess her honest feelings made me happy.
My chest warmed with the honor and joy of being desired by the superior I respected.
“Veronica, you feel the same, don’t you? Isn’t it about time you were more honest with your own feelings?”

Veronica’s cheeks flushed as she averted her gaze from Ashe and me.
“Alright, I’ll let you embrace me. I can’t let Ashe handle it all alone. And after all, it is my duty as Vice-Captain to impart some knowledge to a subordinate who is being promoted, so… you know…”
