Chapter 31: Cry? What’s the Use of Crying?
Currently, Yifu’s side is filled with laughter and joy, and everything is peaceful. The three of us prioritize living well above all else.
On the other hand, after the experiences in the stairwell today, the Cunning Little Wolf, Vivian, returned to the large house prepared for her by the Church.
This is a sizable standalone villa with a courtyard, three stories high. Although it’s not in a prime location, it’s still quite valuable.
Unfortunately, Vivian is the only one living here. Occasionally, a few people claiming to be Vivian’s friends come to visit, but Vivian finds little interest in them.
The size of the place only accentuates Vivian’s loneliness.
There was a time she remembered living with Yifu in a not particularly spacious courtyard but feeling very happy.
Though life was not as luxurious as it is now, when she was hungry, there would be steaming meals cooked by Yifu, and her skirts and clothes were washed and organized by Yifu.
When she felt wronged, she could throw herself into Yifu’s arms and be spoiled, and even if she encountered any troubles, she didn’t need to worry; she just had to hide in Yifu’s embrace.
Yifu would help her sort everything out.
But…
Vivian didn’t know when she started to take these for granted, demanding from Yifu as if it were her right, even pushing Yifu onto the gallows for what she called her own future.
It wasn’t until Yifu spoke those moving words in the tribunal that she truly awakened.
What use are the Church’s Holy Maiden, fame, and status…?
Even a hundredfold of those things cannot trade for someone who truly loves you and cares for you.
In the past, Vivian was immature, finding her daily life with Yifu mundane and uninteresting. She longed for an upper-class life, aspiring for a higher standard of living.
She hated looking at the stars in the narrow courtyard and disliked the ordinary meals Yifu prepared for her.
She yearned for the luxurious carriages of the noble children at the Church Academy, for their exquisite sandwiches, and for the servants who surrounded them like stars circling the moon.
But after leaving Yifu, Vivian truly understood that looking at the stars in this spacious courtyard was not different from anywhere else, even lacking that person who would worry about her coldness and kindly drape a coat over her.
Those exquisite sandwiches, when bitten into, weren’t that delightful at all, even lacking in comparison to the meals Yifu usually made.
The servants surrounding her like stars only made Vivian feel irritated because it was their job; they didn’t really care about Vivian’s well-being, only interested in the benefits they could gain from her.
The more she felt the coldness of this world, the more Vivian appreciated Yifu’s goodness.
She was so gentle; even after Vivian had done such excessive things to her, she was still thinking of Vivian before her death, wanting to witness her grow up and become a young lady.
Vivian traded Yifu for everything she longed for, but only after obtaining it did she suddenly realize she had already possessed everything she aspired to.
Yet she naively discarded it…
Slap!
Thinking of this, Vivian slapped her own face hard, leaving an obvious handprint on her delicate cheek.
Vivian couldn’t comprehend, compared to Yifu, who truly was the real Witch?
Could a girl who would push her nurturing mother onto the gallows for her own reputation truly deserve the title of Holy Maiden?
“Mother… I’m sorry, I miss you so much, I’m really sorry.”
Tears streaming down her face, Vivian couldn’t remember how many times she had cried out to the stars like this.
But what’s the use of crying?
