Marrying the Villainess Noblewoman at the Start – Chapter 3

Graythorn Territory is backed by the Giant God Mountain Range and has a Tears River running through it, making it a fertile land despite its remote location.

This is the territory that Duke Lars has carefully selected for his granddaughter, one that is not too impoverished nor too conspicuous, making it an ideal retirement place.

If Lena does not cause trouble, she could comfortably live out her days in this territory, and beyond the Giant God Mountain Range lies the High Ger Empire where the Elves reside. Even if one day the Northern Border falls and the Demon Clan truly attacks, she could take refuge in the mountains and cling to the Elves for support.

The only issue is that it is situated in the far west of the Northern Border, with a sparse population and a somewhat remote location.

Given the chaotic situation in the Northern Border, being remote may actually help avoid much of the conflict.

After arriving in Graythorn Territory with Lind, the envoy from the Royal Capital left with his guards without looking back, and Lind finally met his fiancée, whom he had seen many times in the game.

I must say, the real Lena is even more beautiful than in the game. Even in armor, her tall and slender figure is evident, her golden hair shimmering like the morning light under the sunrise, and her emerald eyes radiate a pure quality. Paired with her knight armor, she exudes an impressive aura.

It’s quite unfortunate, knowing Lena’s fate, Lind doesn’t have much interest in her. Plus, with the various restrictions in the marriage contract, although he is not technically a son-in-law, Lind is already prepared to accept a life of dependency.

Being with a wealthy woman isn’t shameful, especially when she is such a beautiful little heiress.

After greeting her, Lind handed over the subjects he brought to Lena, who then arranged for a maid to serve him as a response.

Without waiting for Lena to speak again, Lind took the maid and left, showing no intention of getting involved.

Though he had never relied on others in his past life, Lind knew how to live off a patron. After all, with Lena’s strong family back in the Northern Border, how could Duke Lars not provide for him? As long as he finds a way to prevent Lena from rebelling, he could probably live the laid-back life he dreamed of in this world.

And so, Lind strolled around the territory with the maid while contemplating how to stop Lena from causing a rebellion.

Graythorn Territory was previously wasteland, and since Lena had just arrived, it was common to see overseers waving whips instructing the subjects on how to work.

“Are you a fool? Hammering those stakes a couple of times is not enough! If your tent gets blown away tonight, I’ll throw your head into the Tears River!”

Watching an overseer using violent tactics to push the subjects who seemed unfamiliar with pitching tents made Lind frown slightly. Unhappy, he asked the maid beside him, “Are these subjects all serfs?”

“Not all of them.”

The maid beside Lind began to explain in detail.

“It’s said that new territories need to be reclaimed, so land-rich farmers and free people are unwilling to come. These subjects are either serfs owned by Lars or free people who owe debts to the Duke.”

Lind then asked some basic questions, and the maid’s replies were articulate, allowing him to quickly understand the foundational situation in the territory.

“What’s your name?”

Lind, curious, thought it was too much of a waste for someone so knowledgeable about the territory to be just a maid.

“You can call me Lila.”

The maid curtseyed.

Clearly, this maid is not an ordinary person; she might have been sent by Duke Lars to assist Lena, but it seems she has little power.

After a brief exchange, Lind learned that the reason Lila became his personal maid was simply that she was excluded by Lena’s little circle.

It’s not that Lena is incapable of recognizing talent, but those knights she brought formed a natural clique. Whether out of loyalty or self-interest, the knights did not appreciate someone like Lila, an outsider sent by Duke Lars.

Lena also disliked her, so she directly handed Lila to Lind.

“I was just urging the young lady to work hard; after all, there are still many problems in the territory that need to be resolved, and she can’t rest yet.”

Looking at the chaotic territory before him, Lind deeply agreed with Lila’s words.

After all, even Lind had fled from the northern border to this place, yet Lena, who arrived earlier, had only set up a few tent shelters, and nothing else was prepared.

He was astonished to discover, after inquiring with Lila, that the remaining serfs without tents had to sleep on the boats at the dock, which had been constructed in advance by Duke Lars.

However, looking at those cargo ships by the dock, Lind couldn’t help but feel impressed. Even though he had been rejected by the royal family, Duke Lars truly doted on Lena, as there were cargo ships laden with supplies that could potentially block the river if there were more.

Unfortunately, the construction and setup of the territory was progressing far too slowly; the large quantities of supplies on the ships hadn’t even begun to be unloaded.

The good news is that the abundant resources could allow even the serfs to have tents to stay in; the bad news is that the tents were still in the process of being made.

With such poor management, how could one think of rebellion in the future? Lind truly wondered who gave Lena the courage to consider rebelling; it couldn’t possibly be Liang Jingru, could it?

Originally, while watching the serfs being whipped by overseers, Lind felt a pang of guilt, but he couldn’t say much more, after all, he was just someone living off others.

However, when he saw his subjects also getting whipped, and even the border guards he brought along were suffering from overseers’ lashes, Lind finally couldn’t hold back anymore and stood up to kick that overseer.

“What the hell are you doing? Is this how you urge people to work? Look closely; many of these people are elderly and children. Are you not afraid that one whip might kill someone, and then there’ll be no one left to work for you?”

The overseer was about to refute, saying there would always be others to replace them, but upon seeing Lena’s maid following Lind, his attitude instantly shifted to one of respect.

“My lord, I don’t whip them; these people don’t know how to stave off laziness by themselves. I’m just trying to help make the territory better as quickly as I can.”

At that moment, several of Lena’s knights who heard the commotion turned to look.

Although these knights said nothing, their warning glances made it difficult for Lind to take any further action. He could only pick out the elderly, weak, and women from his subjects and set them aside for proper care. These elderly and children had endured a harrowing journey to survive, and Lind didn’t want any of his hard-won subjects to be beaten to death.

At this moment, Lind finally deeply realized how behind Lena’s management abilities were; to say it was feudal society would be an overestimation; it could only be considered slave management.

In such a territory, could they truly consider rebellion in the future?
