Marrying the Villainess Noblewoman at the Start – Chapter 83

The emissary from the Royal Capital arrived once again in this Northern Border, which had driven him to despair.

During the earlier defeat of the allied forces, the emissary had miraculously survived the bombardment and subsequent battles thanks to the protection of his loyal servants.

Since he had not displayed any flags and dressed very plainly, no one pursued him. Plus, he was a Professional, albeit merely a low-ranking and inconspicuous one.

Thus, the emissary from the Royal Capital was very fortunate to have escaped not only alive but also to have returned safely to the Royal Capital.

Unexpectedly, fate took a strange turn; upon seeing how well the emissary could run, Klan decided to hand over the appointment of Lord Governor to the emissary, who had just returned.

Before he had even warmed the seat in his home, the emissary rushed back to the Northern Border.

As for Fang Ge Lars, there was nothing more to say; he welcomed the emissary with delicious food and drink, but the emissary could not feel pleased at all.

After all, he was soon to head to Fasen Town.

Now, Fasen Town no longer existed; it had been merged into Graywhite Territory. When Lind asked Jefferson if he was willing to accept this, Jefferson’s answer was, “I have no objections.”

After all, Jefferson had sworn that he would never sit on the fence again.

However, Jefferson also gained a significant business managing white sugar and restorative potions, which made other nobles incredibly envious. But as a result, Fasen Town disappeared from then on.

Now in the entire western part of the Northern Border, there was only one voice, essentially unchanged from the situation in Fasen Town: why hadn’t the Family Head of Lars or the Grand Lord of Graywhite Territory come to compensate them?

A horse-drawn carriage emblazoned with the emblem of Augustus and the double-headed lion was only informed upon entering the western region of the Northern Border that Lind was currently still staying in the territory of the Evans Family. This was not unexpected, as freshly conquered lands certainly needed some time for digestion.

Furthermore, along the way, the emissary saw many nobles fleeing. When he stopped several to inquire, he found that they were all escaping due to the severe laws imposed by Lind Ror, which made the emissary shake his head repeatedly. Although the situation next door with Fang Ge Lars was hardly any better, with servants and soldiers looting everywhere, there were no signs of nobles fleeing in that territory.

It wasn’t until the emissary entered the city that he discovered the production in the Evans territory had not been affected.

Not only that, but job recruitment signs were everywhere on the streets; it seemed there was an endless amount of work, and people were so busy that no one noticed the luxurious horse-drawn carriage speeding down the street.

This seemed to tell the emissary inside the carriage that the territory continued to operate smoothly, even in the absence of nobles.

No, it wasn’t that nobles were absent; the emissary had already seen several nobles directing work while wearing strange helmets.

The originally proud nobles were now working as overseers.

It seemed that they were not just supervising; familiar faces were even rolling up their pant legs and shoveling a pile of strange sand.

Amid it all, the emissary saw an exceptionally familiar face—Sean Lars.

The current lord’s brother-in-law was in a place that looked like a construction site, instructing those nobles and commoners on how to work.

No wonder those nobles were willing to forget about their image and mingle with a group of commoners; even Sean Lars, once the most promising heir of the Lars Family and the only brother of the current lord’s wife, was working covered in dirt, making it impossible for others to object.

But the emissary, familiar with the nobles, quickly noticed that those working alongside Sean were often the less favored ones at home or those without hope of inheriting their family’s fortune.

Before the emissary had time to ponder the connections between them, the carriage quickly arrived at Lind’s location.

Lind was not very keen on staying in the Evans family’s imposing residence because noble residences were often filled with traps and mechanisms, possibly leading to all sorts of messy rooms. So for the time being, he opted to rent a house that a wealthy merchant had left vacant.

“Long time no see, Your Excellency the Emissary.”

Looking at the professional fake smile on Lind’s face, the emissary felt a chill down his spine, just hoping never to have to deal with Lind again.

“Baron Lind Roer, congratulations! The King has decided that you will serve as the Lord Governor of the Northern Border. Here is the King’s handwritten letter and appointment document.”

Lind had already heard whispers about the appointment of himself as Lord Governor and knew that Fang Ge Lars accepted the same position. After some discussion, everyone still felt it was better to take this appointment.

Because it added a touch of legality to Lind’s rule, even though, on the surface, it was somewhat trivial; after all, Lind ruled under the name of Lars.

However, no one wanted to be seen as a rebel, especially not figures like Lena and Caroline, who were old nobles still ingrained with feudal loyalty to the king.

Lucanus and Flora were much more radical, wishing that Lind would directly declare himself king.

Both sides were a bit extreme, and Lind planned to build tall walls, stockpile resources, delay declaring kingship, swallow the sugar-coated news, and shoot back with artillery.

Perhaps Lind didn’t need this so-called Lord Governor position, but those nobles working under him certainly did. So since the other side offered a step down, Lind was also willing to give them a bit of face.

However, after Lind genuinely read through the appointment letter and Klan’s handwritten note, he felt a strange sensation.

Although Lind was not very familiar with this main character, he couldn’t shake the feeling that the other party didn’t seem like someone who could come up with such a strategy.

Balancing both sides while fanning the flames felt a bit too much like the strategy often employed by a certain superpower from his past life. Furthermore, Klan had even promised that Lind could procure weapons and equipment from the Royal Capital through the channel, which sounded suspiciously like a high-priced sale of outdated equipment under the pretense of earning profits while stoking the fire.

If a more foolish noble had been in charge, they might have genuinely believed Klan was there to support them and would have been ready to fight it out with Fang Ge Lars until the last Northern Border resident fell.

The only thing that felt off was that there was only a fortress separating the Royal Capital from the Northern Border; such a close distance made it easy for the Royal Capital to lose its true offshore balance and risk playing with fire by getting burnt themselves.

Perhaps that was why the Royal Capital would only appoint two Lords Governor to help maintain balance.

Lind figured he could guess that Klan’s handwritten letter was likely not much different from his own: filled with empty words followed by an attempt to push old weapons and equipment from the Royal Capital.

And once either he or Fang Ge Lars were defeated, the Royal Capital would immediately appoint one of the brothers from Fane as the new Lord Governor.

After all, this kind of gameplay had long been employed by ancient people; it was not a fresh concept, and Lind didn’t think the natives were so foolish not to think of similar methods.

Yet it still felt off; this strange feeling lingered in Lind’s mind. The way the opposing side strategized was just too methodical. Could it be that the person replacing Isha from the Royal Capital came up with this plan?

Seeing Lind’s furrowed brow, the emissary cautiously asked, “Your Excellency, the Lord Governor?”

Lind finally snapped back to reality and signed the appointment letter. The emissary leaned closer to check and found it was still that familiar: “Received.”
