Chapter Eighty: Arriving Home
The three members of the Gu family weren’t entirely sure what preparations were needed for the Lunar New Year.
Mengyao Gu and her brother had lived a life of poverty before, where the Lunar New Year meant only a slight improvement in their meals. They hadn’t experienced the festive New Year celebrations like other families in a long time.
Even though Mengyao Gu could hunt a lot of wild game whenever she went up the mountain, after Changlin Wu severely undercut her prices, the silver she received was barely enough to keep them fed.
Therefore, every Lunar New Year, the siblings would quietly sleep through the day and then resume their usual activities the next day, without any sense of festive joy.
As for Gu Yu, before his transmigration, he had no interest in these matters.
Every year, his parents were busy with business and didn’t have time to come back… That’s what they said, but Gu Yu suspected they were busy with their own lovers and had no time to return.
Their marriage was a mere formality, yet they insisted on not divorcing.
They claimed it was to prevent Gu Yu from feeling lonely, but in reality, it was only because dividing the assets was too troublesome.
Gu Yu already knew all this, so he didn’t have any expectations about whether they would come back to spend the New Year with him. On New Year’s Eve, he simply ordered fried chicken and beer for delivery, opened up his computer, and played League of Legends all night, sleeping in the next day.
The most festive day of the year had passed just like that.
So, when Auntie Wang Er mentioned preparing New Year’s goods, the three children of the Gu family were extremely curious, not knowing what was needed for the New Year.
When Auntie Wang Er saw the puzzled expressions on the faces of the three Gu children, she remembered their special circumstances and figured they wouldn’t be able to handle the New Year preparations properly.
Just for the sake of Gu Yu saving her son, Auntie Wang Er wouldn’t let the Gu family have a bad New Year. So, she immediately patted her chest and promised to teach Mengyao Gu how to prepare for the New Year and take her to town to select New Year’s goods.
Rather than choosing a date, it was better to act now. Mengyao Gu was also very much looking forward to the New Year this time. After handing the gold wrapped in cloth to Gu Yu, she followed Auntie Wang Er back towards town.
Seeing Mengyao Gu and Auntie Wang Er’s receding figures, Gu Yu and Gu Qingheng could only return home and wait to see what New Year’s goods Mengyao Gu would bring back.
However, on the way home, Gu Yu felt the gold in his hand getting heavier and heavier, making his arm sore and causing him immense pain!
Normally, with his space ability, this amount of gold would be nothing, but now that his younger brother-in-law was by his side, Gu Yu couldn’t expose it directly. He could only grit his teeth and bear it, quickening his pace towards home.
The escort agency was really something. Couldn’t they just give him paper money?
They had to be so honest and give him actual gold, which was so heavy. Only his little wife could carry it as easily as if it were a handkerchief!
But when it came to him, it was completely different!
“Brother-in-law, what’s wrong! Why is there so much sweat on your forehead? Are you feeling chest tightness, shortness of breath, and blurred vision, with a feeling like you’re about to faint!”
“Come here and try carrying it.”
In the end, before even reaching home, Gu Yu was already struggling.
Just as Gu Yu wanted to stop and rest, his younger brother-in-law beside him spoke curiously, wondering why his brother-in-law was suddenly sweating so much, and if he was about to faint again!
There were only the two of them here now, and he didn’t have the same strength as his sister. If his brother-in-law fainted, he would surely fall hard!
What if he got concussed?
Perhaps he should let his brother-in-law lie down slowly and just faint…
Just as Gu Qingheng was thinking of a solution, Gu Yu spoke in time, asking Gu Qingheng to look at the cloth bundle in Gu Yu’s hand. Gu Qingheng’s face immediately lit up in understanding, and he chuckled without reaching out to try.
He had momentarily forgotten, but now he knew there was gold in the cloth bundle, and that weight was not something a child could carry! w
It was like gold bestowed by the Emperor; even carrying the tray was very difficult for him.
“Brother-in-law, this gold we got this time can finally be spent! Unlike the gold the Emperor gave last time, there was an imprint of the Imperial Seal at the bottom, so it couldn’t be spent at all!”
“After all, it’s an imperial gift. We have enough money at home, so we don’t need to worry about not having money… The gold bestowed by the Emperor can only be kept as an heirloom. However, if someone annoys you in the future, you can hit them with gold nuggets. If they dare to retaliate, show them the imprint at the bottom and see if they dare to fight back.”
“…”
As Gu Yu and Gu Qingheng sat by the roadside to rest, Gu Yu raised his hand to wipe the sweat from his face when Gu Qingheng’s rather emotional voice suddenly rang out. Gu Yu couldn’t help but smile slightly and then playfully said a few words.
When Gu Qingheng heard Gu Yu’s words, he couldn’t help but twitch his lips. Imagining the scene of himself fighting with gold nuggets, he immediately felt an incredibly exhilarating sensation.
Only his brother-in-law could come up with such a plan, fighting with gold bricks bestowed by the Emperor…
Moreover, it might actually lead to victory.
After resting for a while, when Gu Yu felt his strength returning a bit, he quickly urged Gu Qingheng to set off immediately, aiming to get home as quickly as possible.
Holding this pile of gold always made Gu Yu worry that bandits would suddenly appear to rob him and cause more trouble.
Thus, after moving and stopping for a period of time, Gu Yu and Gu Qingheng finally returned home.
As soon as they arrived home, Gu Qingheng clamored that he was tired and went straight back to his room to lie on the bed and rest with his eyes closed.
Gu Yu, after hiding the gold along with the Emperor’s bestowed gold in the heated brick bed’s cavity, looked at the heated brick bed in the room with some worry, feeling that storing the gold here was too unsafe!
If there were thieves, they could easily discover the gold hidden in the heated brick bed’s cavity.
Because there weren’t many places to hide things in the room…
Moreover, Gu Yu couldn’t hide the gold in his space so as to avoid being targeted by thieves… As long as his space wasn’t exposed, Gu Yu couldn’t openly put away this gold, lest Mengyao Gu and her brother become suspicious.
However, this couldn’t go on forever.
Should he find an opportunity to tell Mengyao Gu and her brother about his space?
Thinking about these things, Gu Yu suddenly became anxious and worried.
He simultaneously thought about Mengyao Gu and her brother accepting it with great joy, and also about them resisting him as if he were a flood or fierce beast, which made Gu Yu’s head ache, and he couldn’t decide whether to tell them or not.
If he told them, it would be more convenient to use the space, but the risk involved would also be very great.
Gu Yu didn’t want to become like a vengeful spirit or a malevolent ghost and frighten Mengyao Gu and her brother.
Speaking of which, Gu Yu suddenly remembered that there was still an assassin lying in his space that hadn’t been dealt with…
Now that Mengyao Gu and her brother weren’t here, he could properly deal with this assassin.
With this thought, after taking down the imperial decree hanging on the wall, Gu Yu immediately left the house and walked towards the mountain. When he reached a secluded hillside, he then released the assassin from his space.
When the assassin was put into the space, not only was his foot injured, but he was also doused with a basin of cold water by Gu Yu in the middle of the night, which compounded his injuries and made him extremely miserable.
So when he was released at this time, he was still bound and in great pain, looking as if he was about to ascend to heaven. Gu Yu hoped that this assassin wouldn’t suddenly die.
Gu Yu was still thinking of having the assassin help him with things in the future. If he turned into a corpse, he would have to be thrown into the mountains to feed the bears.
“Kill me! Otherwise, no matter how much you torture me, it will be useless. I’m just accepting the mission given by others.”
The assassin seemed not to have understood the situation. After shouting, he opened his eyes and looked at the sun hanging in the sky, suddenly feeling a little confused… Wasn’t it just late at night? How did it suddenly become afternoon?
Or did he suddenly pass out?
But that didn’t seem right either, because the wound on his foot was still bleeding. If he had fainted earlier, he would have bled to death by now.
Unable to figure out the reason, the assassin looked up at Gu Yu sitting beside him, as if he saw a ghost. He thought he was really unlucky to have taken on this mission; even assassinating a high official in the capital would have been better than coming here!
When he first accepted this mission, he even rejoiced in his heart that the mission was very simple and could be easily completed.
And now, he had been proven wrong…
If he didn’t report back to the alliance within seven days, the alliance would expel him…
He had to find a way to get back quickly, otherwise, if the poison in his body acted up, he would die with blood flowing from his seven orifices.
The anxious assassin didn’t know that after Gu Yu put him into his space, not only a week or two had passed, but the alliance had already removed his name.
Even if he returned now, the alliance would still purge him.
Besides being absent for a long time, the fact that the poison hadn’t acted up was also an important reason.
If the assassin had an antidote that could delay the poison’s effects, the alliance would not let him go… Although the poison hadn’t acted up simply because he was put into Gu Yu’s space.
“Well, I’ve resolved everything, so you’re useless now.”
“???”
“The people of the Wang Clan have been dealt with by me, and they dare not seek revenge now, because I have this.”
As Gu Yu spoke, an imperial decree suddenly appeared out of thin air in his hand.
When the assassin saw the imperial decree in Gu Yu’s hand, his face first showed shock, and then he became blank.
An imperial decree!
It was an imperial decree! In such a short time, how did the Gu family suddenly get an imperial decree?
However, an imperial decree wasn’t much now… The assassin was very curious where Gu Yu had gotten the imperial decree from.
He had just seen with his own eyes that Gu Yu had suddenly produced the imperial decree in his hand as if performing magic.
Was the reason for this failed assassination perhaps that he encountered a legendary immortal?
