Chapter 61 The Matter of Staying or Leaving
The sudden appearance of a fox in the house, and a very spiritual one at that, had thrown the three members of the Gu family into a dilemma.
Although Gu Yu’s idea was that even if it were a female fox, it shouldn’t be kept by Gu Mengyao’s side. He could protect his own little wife, and didn’t need any spirit pets causing trouble.
However, his younger brother-in-law, Gu Qingheng, was completely smitten with the fluffy little fox, to the point of lying on the ground and throwing a tantrum, begging to keep it.
Seeing his teary-eyed appearance, Gu Mengyao, who was standing beside him, felt a pang of sympathy. She, who had originally intended to send the fox away, now found herself in a difficult situation.
In the end, it was Gu Yu, unable to bear seeing Gu Mengyao in distress any longer, who agreed to let the little fox stay.
However, even though it could stay, Gu Yu had no intention of letting it into the house. He suggested that Gu Qingheng find some straw to make a nest for it and place it in the courtyard. It could even stand guard at night.
The little fox was very unhappy with this outcome, but Gu Mengyao readily agreed. Being able to keep the little fox was already a good enough result. Although Gu Mengyao cared about her younger brother’s feelings, she couldn’t ignore her husband’s. So, she could only let the little fox sleep outside in the courtyard.
Upon seeing Gu Mengyao agree, Gu Yu’s lips immediately curved into a smile, and his eyes gleamed with smugness as he glanced at the little fox, silently declaring himself the ultimate victor. Therefore, if it wanted to stay in this house, it had to be obedient.
The little fox, after receiving Gu Yu’s gaze, understood the implied message. It finally lowered its head dejectedly and allowed Gu Qingheng to carry it away to play. It was also quite frustrated! It had been perfectly fine on the mountain, but during the day, it was almost struck dead by lightning and then driven away to this place. That’s right, the little fox, having lived for decades, had never encountered lightning chasing after it like that…
After arriving in the courtyard and meeting Gu Mengyao, the lightning had not reappeared. Thus, the little fox speculated that perhaps it was Heaven’s will that it stay by this woman’s side. However, it was only by Gu Mengyao’s side, and no one else. As for the others, hmph… This was the little fox’s initial thought, but now it knew that among the three members of the Gu family, Gu Yu was the one it absolutely couldn’t afford to offend.
Wuwuwu… No matter how much the little fox regretted its decision, once Gu Yu’s decision regarding the fox was finalized, he immediately pulled Gu Mengyao aside and started talking about what he had just ‘seen,’ describing in detail the appearance of Shun Yang and Jiao’e Lin in the water.
Upon hearing this news, Gu Mengyao covered her mouth in surprise, clearly not expecting these two to be so bold as to behave that way in front of others. Gu Mengyao was merely surprised, not sympathetic towards these two. As the heavens watch what people do, and given that Shun Yang and Jiao’e Lin had previously tried to scheme against Gu Yu, Gu Mengyao felt no sympathy for them. Gu Mengyao was not a woman who was overflowing with sympathy. Having struggled to grow up, she had no spare corners in her heart to feel pity for others.
However… Although Gu Mengyao knew that Gu Yu hadn’t actually seen it and had likely played a key role, thinking about the outcome of this incident, she began to feel a sense of dread. She had previously thought the village was safe, but what if one day a woman took a fancy to Gu Yu and pushed him into the water…
It had to be said that Gu Mengyao was overthinking things. Even if someone really pushed Gu Yu into the water, he would simply swim with the current. And if a woman happened to fall in after him, Gu Yu wouldn’t care if she lived or died!
