In the spring of the second year of Guanghe (179 AD) during the late Eastern Han period, a great plague swept through the north. In March, there was an earthquake in Jingzhao. In April, a solar eclipse occurred, and Emperor Ling of Han issued a great amnesty throughout the empire. Zhang Jiao, a daoist from Taiping, spread his teachings in Jizhou, using talismanic water to heal the people. In a village in Julu, he witnessed tax collectors pressuring a farmer, leading to the ruin of a family and the loss of their land to powerful landlords, leaving behind a lonely child, dazed and reciting obscure nursery rhymes. Zhang Jiao was moved; he touched the child’s hair and sighed, saying, “The ‘Taiping Jing’ states that heaven and earth are indifferent, and all things bear their burdens. The loss of virtue in the world leads to calamity for all.” “Your family’s destruction is due to the state of the world. Yet you remain in a daze, reciting nursery rhymes, akin to a wandering spirit, as if you carry the fate of others…” “In that case, you shall be my acolyte, take my surname, and be called Zhang Chengfu!” Thus, Zhang Chengfu opened his eyes and beheld the tragic late Eastern Han period. Plagues surged, floods and droughts alternated, officials pressed down, and the powerful monopolized resources, while the common people struggled to survive like ants. This was a brilliant age, with heroes emerging and renowned generals appearing. But it was also a brutal age, where the lofty nobles tread upon the corpses of the commoners, feasting on the flesh and blood of the people! They were the enemies of the common folk and even more so the enemies of the Yellow Turbans! The streets are filled with the bones of the nobility, and one torch ignites the return of peace. Heaven has died, and we shall overthrow the decayed Han dynasty. The Yellow Sky shall rise, breaking the gates of the aristocracy and noble families. Blood shall pave the way for peace, and the ants shall shake the tree without rest. Wearing the Yellow Turban, even if we fight for a century, we shall recreate the Yellow Sky for the common folk!
