Chapter 22: Renee
“Damn it, how did they capture someone again, and it’s a subhuman. Did they even write to the city lord? I’m friends with the city lord of Kekken, he will definitely come to rescue me.”
Raphael and several dragon ladies were thrown into a makeshift prison in the hall by a brain demon named Ke Lili, and there were also three humans inside, two men and one woman. Due to the presence of the brain demon, Raphael could understand their words, prompting her to glance over.
“Be quiet, you have ten days left. If you don’t bring the ransom, we’ll be tearing you apart.”
A massive spider, Xiya, was intimidating them from outside, leaving the humans inside quite frightened.
“Wait, don’t kill us, I…”
Ignoring the voices of the humans in the prison, Xiya climbed up along the nearby rock wall, lying down in a small cave above, while the brain demon was sitting in another cave nearby.
“Where’s Famasi? Still digging?”
“Seems like she went to take a bath.”
Ke Lili closed a jewelry box in her hands and turned to look at Xiya, who was applying some white substance to her face seemingly without any experience, making her face look extremely pale, combined with her ethereal form, resembling a ghost.
As soon as Xiya sat down, she couldn’t help but laugh at Ke Lili’s peculiar appearance, pointing at her and saying, “What sort of ghastly thing is that? You look so ugly, hahahaha!”
“…” Ke Lili opened her mouth, glanced down at the mirror, and expressionlessly said, “I bought this from a human city; the women there love to apply this. I’ve seen it, it looks nice, but it seems I applied it too thickly.”
Xiya lay down, her massive spider legs tugging slightly under her, pulling out a tiny bit of spider silk from her body. Spiderfolk’s silk is very precious; they must use the silk they save when building their nests, and the more they eat, the more abundant and white the silk will be.
Seeing the silk in Xiya’s hands resembling white jade, she examined it fondly for a long time, then began to rub the impurities out of today’s silk as if kneading sticky rice.
“How much spider silk have you stored up?”
Ke Lili glanced at Xiya’s large spider body and asked.
Xiya didn’t even look at her, “What do you know? I’ve been saving this silk for several years now; everything I eat goes into storing silk. When it’s time to build the nest, it will definitely be the prettiest and most comfortable.”
“Heh, building a nest, huh?”
Ke Lili put down her makeup box, her ethereal expression gradually fading in the mirror. “We can’t keep going like this; humans won’t be content just staying behind the city walls. Many goblin tribes in the north have already been killed by humans. Once those large tribes are gone, the entire wilderness will be human territory.”
“Tsk, then we’ll just hide in the mountains. I might as well let you live in my nest.”
Xiya seemed not very intelligent, completely unaware of the concern in Ke Lili’s words, instead looking quite optimistic as she stored all her precious silk back into her massive spider body.
Ke Lili opened her mouth, and then murmured, “I hope so. I’ll handle contacting the humans. I’ll set off shortly to see how they use this stuff.”
She placed the makeup box next to the cave, then glanced at Xiya.
“You all should rest early; wait for my news.”
“Okay, okay, you hurry up. I’ll go see what Famasi is up to; I hope she isn’t halfway through washing and went back to digging.”
As Ke Lili’s figure gradually disappeared, Xiya also jumped down from the cave and walked toward another direction within the cave. The fire flickered slightly as her massive spider silhouette gradually elongated until it finally disappeared from sight.
“We’re doomed, we’re doomed, we’re going to be killed.”
A few humans murmured with ashen faces, but at this moment, Raphael could no longer understand their words; that brain demon had already left.
Raphael still wanted to bravely go over to see if she could open the prison doors physically, but after just walking over there, she felt her body weak and her scales ached terribly.
Mill saw this and came over to help her sit back down, softly saying, “It’s okay, Lord Fisher will definitely come.”
Raphael glanced at her, and Mill blushed for some reason, quickly waving her hands and saying, “I mean, Lord Fisher’s carriage is still here, he… should come to take the carriage, and, on top of that… take us away.”
“Sister Mill, how can you believe that human!”
“Exactly, exactly.”
Fashir and Keshil pointed at Mill, making her face turn even redder.
“No, it’s just that Fisher is different from other humans.”
“I’ll tell Brother Bull!”
“Hey, hey, stop talking nonsense, Keshil!”
Bull is Mill’s suitable tail partner and also Keshil and Fashir’s older brother.
The room began to get noisy again, but it remained within a hushed range; they didn’t dare speak too loudly for fear of attracting the earlier spiderfolk, who might shoot a hole in their chests with her firearm.
But the next moment, Ral, who was beside Mill, suddenly yelled out,
“Fisher!”
“Shh, Ral, keep it down. Lord Fisher.”
Raphael seemed to hear a name and suddenly raised her head, only to see a human man in a black suit watching them at the prison’s door.
Seeing Ral shout, Fisher raised his index finger at Ral, signaling her to be quiet.
“Fisher, how did you get in here?”
“Sir, sir! We are from Nali; please save us, tell the city lord of Kekken our location, and we’ll definitely reward you handsomely once we get out!”
Fisher ignored the gleaming-eyed humans and the chattering Ral; he simply pointed to confirm that none of the dragon folk were missing before not opening the prison door, but instead starting to look for his carriage.
After seeing the carriage parked next to the cave, he left the prison door, holding his staff.
“Hey, hey, sir, don’t go, please!”
Watching Fisher walk away without looking back, the faces of the human prisoners grew sorrowful.
Raphael leaned against the prison door and gently closed her eyes, unsure why she felt a bit unhappy about his decision not to open the door first, but it’s understandable; perhaps to him, her and her companions’ weight was not even one-hundredth of his carriage.
She suppressed her inner displeasure and sadness, remaining silent.
Fisher opened the carriage door, entering the mess of the room and opening the drawers, only to find his leather wallet missing; a dark line appeared on his calm face, tightening his grip on the staff.
Stepping out of his room, he suddenly spotted a deep purple dress that had fallen to the ground. Slightly stunned, he reached down to pick up the clothing; the swirling purple rings began to spin again, but upon Fisher’s touch, they completely vanished.
It seemed the magic had already been triggered.
Fisher sighed, and the image of the sorceress suddenly flashed in his mind.
He hung the dress back in the innermost part of the changing room, and as the dress turned over, he noticed a small line of text written in Nali’s cursive at the collar of the garment, “Renee.”
