Chapter 328: 103. Sequence Reward
[Please note that tag rewards consist of three parts: a significant single attribute boost, a single trait boost, and a random item reward. These rewards are determined by the sequence levels you have gathered.]
[You have unlocked the sequence reward: Cotton Candy (Blue)]
[Constitution +10, Soul Self-Healing Ability, Source Grimoire Fragment (II)]
As the ethereal text emerged, Fisher immediately felt a rush of colorful light pouring into his body. It felt as though his muscles were infused with tremendous vitality, leaving him with both soreness and pleasure. He instantly sensed an increase in his physical strength, moving even further away from the realm of human physical strength.
He had already stepped into the tenth rank of life, and although he felt that he was not far from the eleventh rank, it was evident that there was still a distance to go before reaching Erwind’s fourteenth rank.
However, the rewards included not only enhancements to his constitution but also other things. Fisher’s gaze shifted slightly as he read the two lines of ethereal text below.
[Soul Self-Healing Ability: You have gained a stronger soul recovery ability. The magic power and soul force consumed will replenish at a faster rate, and the pain caused by soul damage will decrease.]
[Contributor’s Note: Since you began reading the Soul Supplement Handbook, your soul has already detached from the order rank and is heading towards inevitable chaos.]
Fisher’s eyes flickered as he stared at that line of text for a couple of seconds in silence. Then, a thin book suddenly filled his pocket, jostling the sleeping Emhart. Soon after, another line of ethereal text appeared before Fisher’s eyes.
[Source Grimoire Fragment: The forbidden techniques that manipulate the world are the compassion bestowed upon the ants by the pseudo-god rejected by the world. Although the gods have torn apart the books he personally taught in anger, the forbidden knowledge buried within has ignited the dawn of victory in war like a spark.]
[This is part two of the section torn apart by the gods, recording two “Star Magic” spells and some root magic theories. The book bestowed by the divine has been processed with compassion so that humanity can also understand its meanings, but please be careful while reading.]
Source Grimoire?
Fisher quickly connected this to previous clues he had obtained. All magic of the subhuman races originated from humans, and it was clear that human magic was not something they comprehended on their own but was a gift from a god—the Mother Goddess, who is still commemorated and venerated today. But why does the Supplement Handbook for Sub-Humans refer to her as a “pseudo-god unaccepted by the world”?
Currently, the only true gods Fisher knows of are two: the God of All Forms, Ramastia; and the Gate, Dalasgon. If the angry gods mentioned in the Supplement Handbook include these two, then the Mother Goddess stands in opposition to them.
Did humanity stand victorious in the war against mythical beings because they obtained the magic bestowed by the Mother Goddess?
But that doesn’t make sense. The demon race and the angel race, along with other mythical races whose names have been completely lost in history, are all mythical beings. No matter how powerful human magic might be, if there was no double-ring primary magic, they could only reach the threshold of the mythical rank and could not advance further. However, throughout history, only a few magic masters, represented by Teacher Heilson, have developed the double-ring primary magic, and it alone could not be mass-deployed in war.
Yet humanity still achieved victory in the end. Could this imply that the Mother Goddess not only taught humans magic but also actively participated in the war herself?
As this thought emerged, a sudden chill ran down Fisher’s back. No matter how he speculated about the intentions of the gods regarding him, he found it reasonable, for he understood that the gods would never personally intervene.
From Jasmine, Fisher learned that the gods each had duties to fulfill, and the world’s operation was closely tied to them.
Ramasthia created beings that walk on the earth, swim in the ocean, and soar in the sky, establishing the ranks of life and reproduction. Fisher is still uncertain about Dalasgon’s duties, but judging by the name “Gate,” the clear distinction between the spirit realm and the material world should be closely related to him.
If the Mother Goddess participated in the war herself, this would change the nature of things. No wonder the other gods would be angry and refer to her as a “pseudo-god.”
Fisher did not take out the Source Grimoire from his pocket; after all, unlike the Supplement Handbook, which only he could see, he only glanced down at his pocket and noticed several ancient-looking thin pages that had mysteriously appeared. The spot where the pages were originally stuck still shimmered with an unusual purple light, making it clear to him that this was no ordinary item.
This further aroused Fisher’s suspicions about the author of the Supplement Handbook for Sub-Humans. What kind of existence is this Trans that allowed the Creation Society to be completely unaware, even ignorant of the existence of a handbook that was unrecorded and had leaked out?
Clearly, the author of the Supplement Handbook is well-versed in the Creation Society; otherwise, he would not have disingenuously named this handbook the “Supplement Handbook” as well. Moreover, in the previous annotations, he was quite clear about the consequences of reading the Soul Supplement Handbook and how it affected him.
For this transcendent being whose specific name is unknown and is only identified by a seemingly sinister nickname, Fisher had no leads to pursue. All he knew was that he seemed to be very fond of subhumans. Hmm, wait a minute. If this guy also loves subhumans and wrote a Supplement Handbook because of that, it at least indicates that he has had interactions with essentially all subhumans. Many subhumans are long-lived, similar to the whale folk.
It’s very likely that those long-lived beings might have seen someone like him, who has a special interest in subhumans.
Members of the demon race might know, but Eil seems too lazy, spending his days sleeping in the Abyss and probably isn’t informed. Emhart, who’s afraid of Baemon, is far more likely to know. Or perhaps Jasmine’s mother, Xu? She seems to have also lived for a long time. There aren’t many long-lived beings Fisher knows so far, so he could wait until he encounters more long-lived races for confirmation.
For Fisher, the minute spent in this corridor felt very long. Although unlocking a brand new tag sequence brought him additional questions to ponder, at the same time, his gains could be considered quite substantial. This made him even more excited about the rewards after unlocking the Snow Mountain Affinity sequence.
Cotton Candy seemed not to be a particularly high-level sequence. For higher-quality sequences, he should be able to gain even better rewards.
He had just knocked on Kexiening’s door, but a minute had passed, and there was still no response from inside. This made him start to suspect whether those three had run away again. Feeling somewhat impatient, he knocked on the door again, and this time, a clear “pitter patter” sound came from behind the door—likely the footsteps of the slime race.
“I’m coming, I’m coming!”
The door swung open, revealing the red-haired Corya inside. She was the first to notice the handsome Fisher at the door, and an instant smile broke out on her face. However, her smile stiffened when her gaze fell on the expressionless ice owl race Freya standing behind Fisher.
“Mommy! It’s over! They called the cops to come get us! It’s that stinky old hag officer who caught us before!”
Corya screamed as she dashed back into the room, leaving Fisher and Freya at the doorway with their expressions turning increasingly dangerous. Fisher sighed and turned to greet Freya before preparing to enter the room. The outside presence, Heidi Lin, showed no signs of following; she simply glanced at Fisher before getting busy elsewhere.
“No one is coming to arrest you. Didn’t we agree last night? Since you already know this person, I won’t introduce him. You’re all here for research, not for other matters.”
Upon entering the room, Fisher sat down on the couch and turned to glance at the three slimes huddled together on the bed, almost forming a ball. No wonder no one answered when he knocked earlier; they must have just woken up. Freya, who appeared to be acting on her professional instincts, immediately fixed a sharp gaze on the three in bed. After hesitating for several seconds, she finally sat down with her arms crossed.
“If it weren’t for the Turan family having spoken up in advance, you three would already be back in my custody to continue serving your time. You took advantage of your soft bodies to escape from the sewers and caused a huge headache for our police department.”
Well, it turns out these three had escaped from prison.
“Alright, you three tidy yourselves up. My main focus is on Kexiening; if you two have nothing to do, it’s fine for you to just sit there while I start my research. Is that alright, Miss Freya?”
“Sure, but Lady Heidi Lin didn’t mention what I needed to do when I came here. What exactly is this so-called research?”
Fisher glanced at Freya, whose softness made her hands feel like cotton candy, and he suddenly recalled the comment made by the author of the Supplement Handbook for Sub-Humans. It seemed he held the fur of these races in high regard, making Fisher want to touch it as well.
He lightly cleared his throat and pointed to the sofa behind her, saying,
“I’m very interested in the traits of both your races, so this research will primarily focus on your bodies, but I won’t do anything inappropriate. If you feel uncomfortable at any time, please let me know.”
“Do I need to take off my clothes for that?”
Freya tilted her head, pointing to the cloak draped over her shoulders. Her question left Fisher momentarily speechless. Before he could answer, the door suddenly opened to reveal Valentina, who was sitting in a new wheelchair outside.
The previous wheelchair, made by the Mechanism, was quite heavy. It was always more convenient when changing Mechanism energy sources, but ever since the Mechanism was taken down by Erwind, that Mechanism wheelchair had become a burden. This morning, it seemed Valentina had bought a new, fully manual wheelchair.
“Valentina, what are you doing here?”
“…Officer Freya called me. Is there a problem with my being here?”
This morning, Valentina seemed to still carry the anger from the previous night. After hearing Fisher’s words, she placed her hands on her legs and spoke in an unfriendly tone.
Although she said that, Fisher felt like she must have been eavesdropping outside or thinking of some excuse to come in and see what he was researching on subhumans. Perhaps she unexpectedly overheard Freya’s comment, which could easily lead her to suspect that he was up to something inappropriate with this ice owl race subhuman.
How unexpectedly straightforward, Lady Valentina.
“Of course it’s fine! Since you’re here, you can help me out. The research will progress much faster that way.”
“Huh? Are you crazy? I’m paying to help you find research subjects and hiring you with money, and now you want me to help you work?”
“But you’re standing by the door to make sure I don’t do anything strange to these subhumans, right? Why not come in and check it out yourself? That would not only increase my efficiency but also alleviate Lady Valentina’s suspicions. It’s a win-win situation.”
Valentina’s face flushed slightly, and gritting her teeth, she looked at Fisher and said,
“I told you, don’t call me that. So, what do you want me to help you with?”
While the first part had a hint of annoyance, her later, more honest, softer agreement still couldn’t hide that she wanted to see Fisher’s research.
Originally, his interest in the ice owl race had clearly been overshadowed by the presence of the adorable Lady Valentina in front of him. He smiled and took up paper and pencil, standing up to push her into the room.
“Help me collect data. I usually don’t use instruments, but if you need, I have some here. And since you are from the Northern Region, your insights and understanding of the ice owl race are also what I need.”
“The ice owl race, well, since you’re an outsider, you probably don’t know. Actually, there are many ice owl people within the Miyak region, so finding research subjects isn’t too difficult. They were one of the first tribes to join Miyak society. Now, there are more ice owl people living in the cities than in the wild, and indeed, their feathers are quite soft.”
As Valentina spoke, she extended her hand gently toward Freya, wanting to touch her feathers. Her soft, boneless little hand easily sank into Freya’s fluffy coat. Perhaps she hadn’t realized that beneath that soft fur was Freya’s chest, so she unwittingly touched the other girl’s chest on the first try.
“Hmm!”
Freya instinctively let out a small moan, causing Valentina to retract her hand as if shocked. Feeling somewhat embarrassed, she turned to glance at Fisher, only to find him looking at her in surprise as well. Then, showing an innocent gesture, he shrugged his shoulders.
“Why does it feel like you were more serious when you weren’t studying this?”
“Shut up!”
