Chapter 1031 Hanging
Afterward, I contacted Lavias and confirmed that the Baal Order indeed possessed a sorcery ritual for transplanting organs into human bodies, though it was typically used on undead creatures.
“Transplanting organs from a corpse into a human body, powered by the energy of necromancy and forcibly driven by death qi. It might work for undead, but a human body cannot tolerate it. The Saintess advises against trying it, though we of the Blood Race could.” Lavias explained.
“Do the Blood Race also need organ transplants? Aren’t you immortal already?” I questioned.
“Anything is possible. For example, if our organs are cursed or injured by silver and cannot be healed, organ transplantation becomes useful,” Lavias stated.
“So, does that mean living people cannot use this secret technique?” I asked for confirmation.
“Not necessarily. As long as one knows how to use necromancy, forced activation is not impossible. Take those necromancers, for instance. However, they often experiment on their own bodies, and their bodies become non-human, non-ghost due to the influence of necromancy. It’s questionable whether they can still be considered living people.”
“Then, is there a ritual for transplanting living organs into a human body, or a spell to reactivate dead organs?” I asked again, as Giselle’s internal organs did not seem like those of a dead person.
“That, Saintess, you have stumped me. Theoretically, such a spell should exist, as resurrection magic does. But whether the Baal Church has it, I don’t know. I’ll have to ask around,” Lavias replied.
“All right, I’ll trouble you then. Just make sure it doesn’t affect the relationship between us,” I said. I needed to get to the bottom of this. Why was Giselle afraid of me contacting Lavias or taking her back to the Baal Order at that time?
“Oh, right. According to the intelligence from the General and those two informants, it seems the outcome the Saintess desired was not achieved. The Chief Knight was protected,” Lavias reported.
“What? What’s the specific situation?” I asked urgently. How could this be?
“I don’t know the specifics either. I only received this piece of information,” Lavias responded.
“Okay, thank you for letting me know. I’ll go gather some information myself tomorrow,” I said helplessly and broke contact with Lavias.
After that, I should go to sleep. Although I was worried Giselle might suddenly sneak attack or escape during the night, I was exhausted from the surgery, and with Via watching, there shouldn’t be any major issues. Thinking this, I fell asleep.
As expected, nothing happened overnight. When I woke up the next day, Giselle was still lying in bed, even sleeping. According to Via and Lorna’s reports, she had been lying in bed all night.
“Parul still has things to do today, right? Then go ahead. I’ll stay home and watch her. Nothing will happen,” Older Brother Jayad said.
“All right. If Giselle wakes up, let her walk around in her room, or you can take her out for a walk. Remind her to take her medicine on time too,” I instructed.
Although I harbored some suspicions about Giselle, I had no evidence. Moreover, as a doctor, I had to uphold medical ethics and professional conduct. I was different from Amelia. As long as she was here, I would treat her with all my heart.
After giving the instructions, I set off with the blueprints. Today, I was going to Sebastian’s Detective Agency first. I had arranged for Mr. Zhang to wait for me there to hand over the revised blueprints.
On my way, I passed the execution ground, which was crowded with people. Four months ago, I had witnessed the witch’s execution here and seen her escape in its entirety.
Everything had changed since that night. I had now become a witch, and my achievements might even surpass hers. Although my magic and magical cultivation might not be as profound as hers, I had already deciphered all of her original notes, the ones she couldn’t understand. Even the incomplete parts she didn’t know were filled in by Older Brother Jayad.
Thinking of this, I couldn’t help but sigh. I looked towards the center of the execution ground, wanting to see why so many people had gathered, and then I was stunned.
The execution ground was the same as before, with iron cages containing skulls above. Prisoners were tied to wheels and crushed to death, and there were also pyres specifically for burning heretics.
But today was different. Today, hanging was being used. Since there were many prisoners, hanging was a convenient way to execute many people simultaneously. The prisoners were already being brought to the scene, their hands tied behind their backs, their eyes and mouths covered with white cloth.
The execution ground itself was lower than the surrounding ground, with a circle of tiered stone steps around it. The execution platform, however, was built very high, allowing more people to witness the execution.
This was not only a rare form of entertainment in this era that lacked it, but also the best way to warn commoners, deterring them through extreme cruelty, ensuring they absolutely would not defy the lord.
Today was no different. The free execution ground was packed, and even the surrounding houses were filled with people. Everything was just like the day I watched the witch’s execution, as if the tragedy of the witch’s escape and slaughter at the scene had never happened.
And I recognized these death row inmates because they were the ones I had captured a few days ago and handed over to the Militia Group.
At this moment, an execution officer walked onto the platform, unfurled a scroll, and read loudly: “The City Defense Army harbored ill intentions and collectively defected. Fortunately, the Lord’s wisdom and might swiftly annihilated them. The citizens can rest assured. The Lord has decreed that all remaining followers will be hanged as a warning!”
Afterward, a group of soldiers pushed the captured City Defense Army soldiers onto the platform. These men were already emaciated and extremely weak. They had likely not been given water or food for the past two days and were now incapable of any resistance. They were pushed onto the gallows and lined up.
Wait! This is wrong. I caught them and handed them over to make them testify that the Chief Knight and the Jester had forced them to rebel. Yet, it had only been three days. What could they have possibly investigated?
Moreover, generally speaking, the one responsible for desertion should be the officer, and the soldiers were merely following orders. With troops being deployed, why would they be so readily sentenced to death?
Normally, wouldn’t such individuals be dispersed and assigned to other barracks to atone for their crimes? Especially since these were the Lord’s personal soldiers; losing even one would be his loss. Now, all of them were to be executed – this was too abnormal.
But I couldn’t possibly storm the execution ground, and even if I did, it wouldn’t change the situation. I could only watch as the execution officer placed the rough hemp ropes around the soldiers’ necks.
Then, the floor of the execution platform suddenly opened and fell. The soldiers were pulled down by their own weight, and the ropes instantly tightened around their necks. Most of their neck bones were instantly broken.
“Waa! Waa!…” They struggled initially, but one by one, they stopped moving. They were all dead.
