Different dinosaur roars came from the forest, filled with fury and the desire to prey. The recruits’ legs trembled just looking at these terrifying creatures that had survived from prehistoric times.
“Boom!” The leading dinosaurs crashed heavily against the shield wall, pushing back the soldiers wearing Steam Armor and wielding heavy tower shields a step, but they remained standing.
If viewed from above, the dinosaurs looked like they were hitting the water’s surface, creating small ripples but failing to break through their formation.
Even though these Steam Armor warriors were tall, at least over two meters with their armor, they still looked like a group of ready-to-eat tin cans compared to the generally four to five meter tall and massive dinosaurs.
Yet, this group of soldiers, at a disadvantage in size, withstood the first wave of these magical beasts, only retreating a few steps. Some of our new recruits were scared off.
This made the Knight Captain feel ashamed, but I didn’t blame them. Many of them were encountering magical beasts for the first time, especially such massive ones, which put immense pressure on people.
When they charged with the earth trembling, opening their gaping mouths to reveal sharp teeth and drooling, their roars deafening, it was natural to feel fear.
Leaving the others aside, many of the doctors around me were trembling in fear, hiding deeper in the carriages as if the fragile vehicle could actually protect them from the attacks of the magical beasts. It was merely for psychological comfort.
However, Amelia was very calm. Unlike the other doctors beside her who were trembling or even shouting, she observed the magical beasts with curiosity, as if contemplating which ones would be suitable for medicinal use.
I looked back at the Citizen Cavalry. Older Brother Jayad was calmly drawing his sword and observing these magical beasts, seemingly calculating their Combat Power, while his mount, a Packhorse, was armored and appeared eager to fight.
I wanted to see Little Elaine’s performance, and found that this noble scion was also on the battlefield for the first time. He appeared very nervous and was trembling, but his mount, the Rock-horned Beast, was much calmer than him.
“Attack!” The General swung his Saber, and the soldiers of the Holy Roman Empire let out a unified roar: “Charge!”
“Sizzle!” A piercing chainsaw sound rang out. The chainsaw at the front of the halberd spun at high speed, cutting directly into the hard skin of the magical beasts, causing fresh blood to splatter.
“Fire!” The infantry behind them stood up simultaneously and opened fire. The dense, 88-caliber ammunition shot at the magical beasts, but only left some superficial wounds on their thick hides.
The chainsaw halberds were the same. Although it looked like they cut through the magical beasts’ skin, it was only a flesh wound. Even if the soldiers thrust with all their might, they couldn’t cut any deeper.
As expected, although they were dinosaurs, they were also magical beasts. The Combat Power of these dinosaur-like magical beasts was terrifying, and their flesh defense was astonishing.
More and more magical beasts crashed into the front lines. The first few dinosaurs began to open their gaping mouths to bite the tin cans, or flick their tails like whips at the shield wall.
Under continuous pressure from the front, these warriors of the Mechanical Church were not so easily defeated. Their chainsaw halberds spat fire, and some tower shields suddenly exploded when struck, blasting the charging dinosaurs.
The soldiers of the Mechanical Church had all sorts of ingenious tricks and equipment. Not only were their halberds and shields equipped with special weapons, but their armor was also incredibly hard, preventing them from being breached even by a bite from a magical beast.
However, while the formation of the Holy Roman Empire could hold, other directions might not be able to. After all, the Holy Roman Empire had fewer people, and their lines couldn’t extend to protect the entire army. Soon, some magical beasts began to flank them.
Defending the flanks and filling the gaps for the Holy Roman Empire were the new recruits from Cando City. They were completely overwhelmed. Seeing the magical beasts charge, they were terrified and panicked. Only a few brave ones still held on, trying to brace themselves with spears at the front of the formation.
As a result, the magical beasts charged against the spears, and the wooden spears were actually snapped. The soldiers at the front were sent tumbling.
Earlier, I said that the combat skills and equipment of these recruits were mediocre. Now, even “mediocre” seems too generous. Of course, the magical beasts’ hides were too thick and their strength too great.
“Ah! Ah!” A tragic scream rang out. We turned to see a hapless soldier being bitten into a gaping maw by a terrifying magical beast. With one bite, flesh and blood flew, and there was no hope for him.
This terrifying Tyrannosaurus was plump and emerald green all over. Its huge mouth was filled with sharp teeth, and its hind legs were very developed, allowing it to run at high speeds with ease. However, its forelimbs had degenerated to the point of being almost negligible.
But in my eyes, this terrifying magical beast unexpectedly resembled a loofah, a loofah that had legs and could run. This almost made me want to laugh, which was inappropriate given the tragic battle. I suppressed it.
While I found it amusing, the Knight Captain couldn’t laugh. In his eyes, this Tyrannosaurus was just a brutal and terrifying monster, and letting it charge into the infantry would cause great trouble.
The Tyrannosaurus plunging into the crowd was like a wolf entering a flock of sheep. A single tail whip could send many soldiers flying, and one bite could devour several soldiers.
The ragtag army had no courage to confront the magical beasts, and morale was about to collapse. Some people were already trying to escape in the confusion.
The Knight Captain was anxious. If the Tyrannosaurus broke through the flanks, the ranged Fire gun troops would be in danger.
He drew his sword and prepared to lead his guards to drive back the magical beasts and stabilize his line. The only combat-capable forces left around him were these knights in Steam Armor.
Just then, the General stopped him, saying, “Just a few magical beasts? It’s not worth the commander’s personal intervention. Calm down and watch, they can handle it.”
The Knight Captain thought that it was easy for him to say; it wasn’t his soldiers dying. Although these were new recruits, they were important reinforcements for the defense of Green Town, and the captain couldn’t bear the responsibility for too many casualties.
“Boom!” Just then, a deafening cannon roar sounded. A fireball erupted on the Tyrannosaurus, and it staggered back a few steps.
We looked in the direction of the cannon fire and saw that one of the three cannons on that War Machine was emitting wisps of smoke. It had just repelled the Tyrannosaurus with a single shot.
But this was only one shot. The Tyrannosaurus didn’t even fall; its skin was only slightly broken. It roared at the mecha that had injured it and charged again.
“Boom! Boom!” The rotary barrel on the mecha’s right arm turned again, and the remaining two barrels also fired.
