Chapter 1207: Albrisque’s Restriction
“Reinforcements have arrived?” Albrisque, riding a Flying Dragon, looked down and breathed a sigh of relief. Although he was strong, he was not made of iron, and Flying Dragons needed rest. If the monsters continued to attack, he wouldn’t be able to hold on, especially since he had no good solution for the Beast King.
But who was providing the support? Albrisque looked outside the town and saw a familiar figure flying over on a strange bird, which surprised him greatly.
“Numanuer? So you’re the one who brought people to support me? Who are those people? And what is that mount of yours?” Albrisque asked the Knight Captain, looking surprised.
Although he had indeed written a letter requesting aid to the Lord of the City, he didn’t really expect reinforcements to arrive, given that his relationship with the Lord of the City had plummeted to an all-time low.
Moreover, Numanuer, the Knight Captain, didn’t have a very good relationship with him. His overly righteous personality in the past was somewhat incompatible with Albrisque’s, and they often argued in front of the Lord of the City’s mansion.
A while ago, Albrisque had incited Numanuer to hunt down a person. Because Numanuer was very firm in his principles of justice, Albrisque found a good reason, claiming that a witch had attacked a City Defense Army outpost, causing heavy casualties.
As Albrisque had anticipated, this instigation was successful. Numanuer, enraged, went to the location and brought his strongest personal guards, a team of fully armed Steam Armor warriors, and he also sent a sniper along.
Unexpectedly, this seemingly sure-to-win battle backfired. They were supposed to capture the witch, but behind her stood the mysterious organization known as the Old Day Imprinter, which led to the complete annihilation of Numanuer’s personal guard and a severe injury to the sniper.
Albrisque had originally thought that Numanuer would fly into a rage at him upon his return. He had even pre-arranged countermeasures with Rodrigo, planning to report to the Lord of the City first, claiming he had known about the cult’s presence there all along.
But to his surprise, Numanuer did not seek him out to hold him accountable, nor did he fly into a rage before the Lord of the City. He simply recounted the bizarre events of that night.
Then came Albrisque’s misfortune. Incited by the Jester Rodrigo, he attacked the Count’s son and his party again in an attempt to silence them, only to be thwarted by the witch once more.
This time, even evidence of their collusion was found. The Lord of the City’s Battle Flag had been taken by him without permission and lent to the remnants of the City Defense Army. Not only were they completely wiped out, but even the Battle Flag was damaged.
This enraged the Lord of the City. However, given Albrisque’s considerable strength, he was not someone a mere Baron like himself could easily dispatch.
Secondly, he controlled a large number of soldiers in the city and had deep-seated relationships with officers at various levels. Killing him would cause unrest.
The Lord of the City suppressed his anger and did not turn his back on Albrisque. Instead, he revoked Albrisque’s position as Chief Knight, banished him from Cando City back to his fief, and ostracized him, even forbidding Green Town from returning to Cando City.
Albrisque had been in an awkward position for quite some time. As a vassal of the Baron, he had sworn an oath of loyalty upon receiving his enfeoffment. This oath was absolutely inviolable, having been certified by the National Stabilizing Artifact. If he were to break it, his fate would be worse than death, and his soul would be tormented for eternity.
Therefore, he had to obey the Baron’s commands. Even if the Baron wanted him dead, Albrisque could only kneel and accept his fate. If the Baron ordered him to guard his territory, Albrisque could only be confined to Green Town, desperately requesting aid.
Consequently, he had not been very aware of the recent situation in Cando City, only receiving news from Rodrigo, who claimed he was still working hard for the Lord of the City to forgive Albrisque, but the Lord of the City was not showing any signs of relenting.
Thus, Albrisque was in a state of de facto exile. He had initially chosen the Lord of the City precisely because he thought him to be weak and incompetent, but he never expected the Lord of the City to be so resolute.
After the news flow stopped, Albrisque was unaware of any new intelligence from Cando City. He didn’t know if anyone would come to his rescue after he wrote his letter requesting aid. Unexpectedly, the one who arrived was Numanuer, with whom he had a contentious relationship and whom he had previously wronged.
Now, seeing how much Numanuer had changed, not only bringing a group of soldiers in strange armor but also a bizarre Flying Beast mount, what had happened to him after he was driven out?
“Um, the Lord of the City was initially unwilling to send reinforcements, but I persuaded everyone and came to save you. After all, you are also a knight of the Lord of the City, and the commoners of Green Town are also subjects of the Lord of the City. We cannot leave them to die,” the Knight Captain said.
Albrisque was taken aback. This explanation was very much in line with Numanuer’s character. He was a principled person, and Albrisque had cursed him as pedantic behind his back more than once.
But this pedantry allowed him to set aside personal grievances or disagreements and come to his aid, or rather, to save the commoners below. This made Albrisque feel fortunate.
“Roar!” The Beast King would not allow the two to converse leisurely in mid-air. It enraged him, and he raised his head towards the sky, unleashing a scorching beam of light from the orange-red sac.
Both of them, riding their Flying Dragons and Byakhee respectively, dodged the beam of light to the sides. The Knight Captain shouted, “Let’s defeat it first!”
“Alright! But do you have a way to defeat that Beast King?” Albrisque asked. Although Numanuer bringing reinforcements moved him, those ordinary soldiers could not harm the Beast King at all; they would only be sacrificing themselves.
If the Beast King couldn’t be defeated, the beast tide’s attacks wouldn’t stop. Even if all the monsters in the town were eliminated, the Beast King could summon more monsters from the surrounding areas.
This was the natural control that the top-tier monsters possessed over the lower-tier ones. The previous group of monsters had been summoned by the Beast King, and in this heavily corrupted region, there was no shortage of monsters around.
Although Albrisque felt he could slowly wear down the Beast King, it was troublesome. Albrisque harbored a slight selfish thought: if the Beast King overran Green Town, he would be freed from his orders and could escape.
Even though this would inevitably lead to the loss of Albrisque’s accumulated wealth over the years, as long as he was alive, with his strength, he could thrive anywhere. At worst, he could flee abroad. As long as the Baron couldn’t find him, he couldn’t issue any orders.
However, Albrisque dared not voice this thought. Furthermore, due to the restrictions of his orders, he had to at least resist the invasion seriously, at most not exerting his full strength and focusing on self-preservation.
But Numanuer revealed a piece of news that surprised him: “Some of those reinforcements are from the Holy Roman Empire. They brought a trump card with them that can definitely defeat the Beast King.”
As soon as he finished speaking, a gigantic War Mech leaped out from beyond the mountain. Steam billowed from its body, and it charged towards the Beast King at extreme speed.
