Chapter 1295: Ammonite Monster
“Holy crap! Isn’t that Blood Oil? I heard from Sebastian before that Cui Fu New Energy Company has been selling their fuel to the Cando City army. I even saw the Female Representative signing procurement agreements with them in the Lord of the City’s mansion.
But I never expected them to be using it directly as a consumable for defending the city. Fuel is indeed a very important supply for any army. Having a large supply at a low price is definitely good, but don’t they think there’s anything wrong with this fuel?
I watched as barrels of fuel were being stirred on the city wall, like a blob of mud monster, and those soldiers were hastily stabbing large wooden ladles into the mud, scooping up a large ladleful.
The fuel in the ladles was still moving, and it even seemed to extend tentacles, licking towards the soldiers’ hands. The spilled oil also wriggled and crawled on the ground like slugs.
And those soldiers just ignored it, letting the black-red oil stain their skin, leaving streaks of grease on the city wall. They then lit the fuel and hurled it out, all on their own.
What’s more, when facing the monsters climbing up, they would directly stab their swords into the fuel, then dip it into a bonfire, and their swords would ignite. The soldiers would then wield these flaming swords at the monsters.
The temperature of these flames seemed quite high. The magical beasts screamed as they were hit and fell off the city wall. The places they were struck by the swords also burst into flames. Perhaps these magical beasts were also susceptible to fire due to their fur.
Moreover, the duration of this fuel’s effect was quite long. This is essentially a makeshift flame enchantment. No wonder the soldiers liked it so much.
And soon, I realized why these soldiers didn’t find the fuel strange. It’s because, in their eyes, it was just normal fuel. My Spirit Vision is high, so I could see that this fuel seemed to have a life of its own.
However, anything that seems a little off to me is likely to be really off. This fuel is so bizarre, and coupled with my past experience with Sturgeon No. 3, I know that if these soldiers continue to be exposed to it for a long time, they will definitely mutate.
After watching the monster siege battlefield for a while, I confirmed one thing. Although the monsters’ offensive was indeed fierce, it was not enough to threaten Cando City. The Cando City defenders still had some room to spare, especially after the Knights joined the battle, the pressure significantly decreased.
But the fight wasn’t easy. The individual combat power of these monsters was too strong, and when they went berserk, they fought to the death without retreat, resulting in many casualties.
The unluckiest were definitely the Commoners in the outer city districts. Once the monsters broke into the outer districts, they started their massacre, destroying everything in sight. Many of them used area-of-effect magic or attacks. If the Commoners were caught in the attack, they would die.
Luckily, the monsters’ charge was only in this one direction. They could flee to other areas not engaged in combat. However, it was difficult to prevent property damage.
Seeing this, I shouldn’t stay here any longer. It’s quite dangerous here, with magic exploding around me from time to time. I blended in with the fleeing crowd and ran along the city wall towards the Medical Camp.
As I was halfway there, my path was blocked by a monster that looked like an ammonite. It was five meters tall, with a heavy shell on its back from which tentacles, like those of an octopus, extended.
The most crucial part was that its tentacles glowed with a faint white light, imbued with Magic Power. It could also open its mouth and spew out a lot of bubbles, which, when they landed on people, would cover them with a layer of highly corrosive mucus, instantly dissolving human flesh.
This Ammonite Monster had likely come in through a gap on that side earlier. It had gotten separated and crawled its way here. Its giant, fossil-like shell was covered in scratches and bullet holes, but none of them had penetrated it.
Now, this monster was blocking the road ahead, constantly extending its tentacles to catch prey. Ordinary people who were caught by it would cry out and be dragged into its heavy shell, their screams abruptly stopping. Their fate was likely grim.
There were no soldiers around. Perhaps the main force had all been deployed to defend the city gates. There were only a few Adventurers passing by who were fighting the Ammonite Monster.
But it was clear that although they tried their best to attack the Ammonite Monster, their strength was insufficient, and their equipment was inadequate. They couldn’t penetrate its thick, black shell. And when they attacked its soft body, its vital parts were retracted inside the shell, and its tentacles were covered with magic, making it difficult to injure.
This Ammonite Monster blocked the path, so the fleeing Commoners had to make a wide detour to bypass it. Luckily, this Ammonite Monster was relatively slow-moving, and there were Adventurers constantly distracting it, preventing it from pursuing them.
However, it was not so easy for the vehicles carrying weapons, ammunition, and medical supplies to make a detour. Especially since the monster emanated an aura of pressure that startled the mounts pulling the carts, causing them to run wild and become difficult to control, creating significant trouble for transportation.
Since I was passing by, and this Ammonite Monster happened to be blocking my way, I decided to deal with it and help out a little.
These Adventurers had no good way to deal with its thick and hard shell. But for me, it was a piece of cake. There were no troops around, so I figured no one would notice me casting spells.
I directly used Life Drain on the Ammonite Monster. But unexpectedly, the giant ammonite shell almost completely blocked Life Drain. It was even immune to magic, truly a natural anti-magic material.
However, its exposed soft tissue parts were not protected by the shell. Soon, a surge of Blood Energy was absorbed into my body. It had been a while since I had absorbed life so thoroughly. I felt incredibly comfortable.
The Ammonite Monster didn’t feel anything at first, but soon, the exposed flesh parts began to wither, and its Magic Power leaked out like a deflated balloon. If this continued, it would die!
Although the Ammonite Monster was furious and irrational, it quickly realized that it was in trouble. It immediately retracted its body back into its shell.
I was waiting for this moment. I directly targeted the opening of its shell and cast Poison Mist Technique. Its shell was anti-magic, but the opening was not.
Actually, Poison Mist Technique is my most discreet magic. The poison mist would appear directly at the point I designated. People with high Spirit Vision might see the Blood Energy I absorbed with Life Drain, but it’s difficult to tell who cast Poison Mist Technique.
The Adventurers surrounding the Ammonite Monster saw it suddenly retract into its shell, with a green smoke rising from the shell’s opening. They thought it had unleashed some strange move and quickly retreated several steps in alarm, watching cautiously.
Actually, I really wanted to try using my Devour spell on that anti-magic shell to see if it could bite through. Theoretically, anti-magic materials should be immune to all magic. But Beelzebub’s Devour is said to devour everything, even space itself, which seems like a contradiction.
However, using Devour would be too conspicuous. If a piece suddenly went missing, everyone would notice. I should keep a low profile here.”
