The Little Witch’s Daily Struggle – Chapter 1407

Chapter 1407: Can Collecting Five Eyeballs Grant a Wish?

This was the first time I had ever witnessed hundreds of otherworldly beings fighting each other before my eyes. They wielded simple, primitive weapons in a brutal and cruel deathmatch. The combat on both sides was anything but elegant; they used low-level blade techniques, lunged to grapple with enemies, biting with their teeth and clawing with their talons, and even spat poison as a surprise attack, resorting to any means necessary. Unlike humans who relied on weapons and equipment, the otherworldly beings depended more on their bodies. Their fangs, sharp claws, and even the fur on their bodies could become weapons.

I saw a Corrupted Kin spread its arms, and countless worm threads shot from its back like guided missiles, impaling a Ratman until it was riddled with holes. But the very next second, a Giant Rat pounced on it, biting open the worm shell on its throat. A Hybrid grabbed the Giant Rat with its claws and flew into the air, flapping its wings. It was raining arrows from the crude bow in its hand, but as soon as it took flight, it was met with a barrage of Poisonous wind bottles and Poisonous throwing knives from the Ratmen. After being poisoned, it directly plummeted to the ground.

A Naga charged forward, wielding two long-handled sabers in its six hands. Its slithering body was too small for the twirling blades, rendering the Ratmen unable to get close. However, a hulking Rat Ogre charged forward, taking sabers to the chest, and managed to grab the Naga. The Naga couldn’t break free. Its snake head lunged out and bit directly into the Rat Ogre’s arm, its fangs rapidly injecting deadly snake venom. In pain, the Rat Ogre twisted forcefully, and with a shriek from the Naga, its serpentine body was twisted into a knot. Though the Naga died, the Rat Ogre was also heavily poisoned and collapsed after only a few steps, perishing together with its enemy.

Such brutal combat was commonplace on the battlefield. Even though both sides had been summoned and had no prior grievances, they were forced to fight to the death due to the summoner’s commands and contractual obligations. The enemy’s numbers were vast. I had to continuously play my flute to summon Ratmen, filling the gaps left by casualties. Even so, with over a dozen Alien Parasites summoning simultaneously, their numbers still surpassed mine.

By the time I felt an unusual tremor under my feet, it was already too late. The ground suddenly heaved, and over a dozen Ghouls erupted from underground, lunging at me. The ground here had been soaked in blood for a long time and was likely formed from the accumulated sediment of corpses, making it soft and suitable for ambushes by Ghouls, who were adept at burrowing. Of course, Ratmen were also skilled in surprise burrowing attacks. I was currently playing my flute to summon Ratmen and couldn’t chant spells. I could only retreat rapidly, with the Ghouls in hot pursuit. Just then, I heard a guttural, muffled voice from behind me, as if speaking with sand in its mouth. I had heard this speech before; it was Ghoul language, and the voice was familiar – it was Sherris speaking. Upon hearing her words, the Ghouls faltered and simultaneously stopped.

I also stopped, watching them vigilantly. However, I didn’t stop playing the flute, merely using my tone to command the Ratmen not to attack the Ghouls and to observe the situation. Sherris continued speaking to them, essentially telling them to leave. Ghoul language had many grammatical and expressive differences from human languages, so I couldn’t fully translate it, only grasp the general meaning. But I didn’t hold much hope for Sherris’s persuasion. Although they were of the same kind, they wouldn’t abandon the fight just because a fellow creature persuaded them. It would be like asking if I could persuade warring England and France to cease hostilities with a few words – clearly impossible.

Unexpectedly, after Sherris finished speaking, the Ghouls actually turned and left. Not only that, but they also called out to the other Ghouls fighting on the battlefield and burrowed away together, even snatching some corpses to eat on their way. I was astonished. How did she do it? This was more than just a matter of saving face. All summoned entities were bound by certain contractual restrictions; they couldn’t just leave whenever they pleased. The Ratmen summoned by Hamel’s Flute, even if they sought benefits, wouldn’t receive them until after the battle. When summoned, they had to obey my commands absolutely and fight to the death. Sherris’s persuasion was somehow able to bypass the summoning restrictions? This was impossible, and I hadn’t seen her cast any spells. So, I could only stop playing my flute and ask Sherris, “How did you do that?”

“It’s nothing, I just gave an order. I commanded them to retreat. Parul (Sister), I’ve investigated several brains and the memories within them all indicate that only the mental fluctuations of Alien Parasites can open this sealed space,” Sherris diverted the topic. “Additionally, I’ve obtained some intelligence: Master is indeed imprisoned in the experimental area, and I must save him. To reach the experimental area, five mutated eyeballs are required.”

“Huh? Eyeballs?” I was stunned for a moment before realizing that the Master Sherris was referring to was Pierce. She intended to rescue him. However, for us to rendezvous with Lorna, we also needed to go to the experimental area. The key was the five mutated eyeballs. No wonder she could see the door to the experimental area. The problem was, where could we find mutated eyeballs now? There were quite a few Mutants fighting Older Brother Jayad over there, but their eyeballs were generally not fully mutated; they seemed like half-finished products. If I collected five from different individuals, would that count as a complete set of eyeballs?

“Regarding the condition of the eyeballs, I’ve already obtained them,” Sherris said, opening her palm. There lay five eyeballs, emitting a twisted, black-red blood energy. One could feel the immense filth and chaotic spiritual residue contained within them. “Where did you get them?” I looked at the disemboweled Alien Parasite corpses behind her. It was likely Sherris got them from them. But these Alien Parasites themselves weren’t mutated, were they?

“I found them on a corpse. They should be the five eyeballs left behind by that young girl who failed earlier. They were removed and kept as spares,” Sherris explained. If that was the case, the quality of these eyeballs would be very high. That young girl had undergone the ritual, but she died from a Vascular Disease just as she neared success. It was no wonder they contained such complex blood energy and strong spiritual imprints. Speaking of which, to be dismembered by Vascular Disease and somehow have these eyeballs preserved showed that they weren’t easily destroyed. And fortunately, the Chairman didn’t possess them, otherwise, he would have ended up in my belly along with her just now.

“Now, only one problem remains. We need a vessel that can accommodate the five eyeballs, otherwise, we won’t be able to see the door,” Sherris stated. A body that could hold five eyeballs… that was indeed a bit difficult. But now wasn’t the time to discuss that. At the very least, we had to get out of this oil-producing area before considering anything about the experimental area. On the Ratmen’s side of the battle, because I wasn’t continuously summoning reinforcements, they were falling into a disadvantage again. If Sherris hadn’t called away the Ghouls, the Ratmen would likely have collapsed.

“It can’t be helped, I’ll handle them,” Sherris said, as a pair of multicolored wings unfurled from her back.

You hear the penny-dreadful tales, don’t you? Souls whisked off to other worlds, landing in lives of ease and splendor. Reborn as young lords in grand manors, with enchanted baubles at their fingertips or a spectral mentor whispering secrets. But my own ‘grand arrival’? No gentle angel to light the path. Instead, a repulsive, foul deity—some forgotten horror from a darker age—claimed me. I was tormented to the very edge of oblivion, then pitched into a twisted, gaslit world of shadows and fear. I awoke in the frail body of an orphan girl, shivering in some rat-infested rookery, choked by smog and despair. Weak, plagued by illness, with a hunger that gnawed relentlessly. My new story didn’t start from scratch; it began deep in the dregs, clawing my way up from less than nothing.” Now, all I fight for is to live, to see another grimy sunrise over these cobbled streets. Not just for my own skin, but for him—the one whose fate is tangled with mine, the one soul I cling to in this godforsaken, fog-drenched city.
