Chapter 1458: An Extra Half Head
“Ah!!!” Amelia screamed, recoiling backward. Luckily, Samantha extended her tentacles in time to grab her and pull Amelia back.
Moreover, commendably, even with the sudden incident, Samantha did not let go of Lorna, still holding her tightly. This prevented Lorna from suffering any mishaps during this unexpected event.
“Amelia! What happened?” I asked nervously, seeing that she seemed unharmed. However, dealing with a bizarre mutated product like the Inner Eye, who knew what problems could arise.
“My, my head hurts so much! My stomach hurts too!” Amelia groaned, clutching her head with one hand and her stomach with the other, her face contorted in pain. It seemed she was seriously injured.
Older Brother Jayad cast a beam of Holy Light onto Amelia, but it was ineffective. The Holy Light did not alleviate her pain; instead, it was pushed back by the moonlight emanating from her stomach.
“What exactly happened!” I asked anxiously. If Amelia was harmed because she was helping me, I would feel too guilty.
Of course, I didn’t expect any danger from performing surgery, and I had a blind confidence in Amelia’s abilities, believing her to be omnipotent in medicine, never considering the possibility of her failure.
Just as I was about to examine Amelia’s injuries, Samantha said, “I will assist the doctor. Miss Parul, please quickly save this Miss Ghost!”
Holy crap! It was only then that I noticed Amelia’s silver scalpel had somehow slipped from her grasp and fallen into Lorna’s head, embedded right next to the Inner Eye, almost touching it.
Blessed silver items have a continuous damaging effect on ghosts, like poison. Furthermore, it was in such a crucial location as the head, meaning Lorna was in grave danger.
I quickly reached out my hand to retrieve the silver scalpel. As I was about to grasp it, I had a fanciful thought: why don’t I replace Amelia and finish the surgery myself?
However, the moment I touched the scalpel, I was stunned. My hand felt like it had touched a searing hot branding iron, and a flood of chaotic information surged into my mind, which I couldn’t block at all.
Fortunately, unlike Amelia, I was not caught completely off guard. I had prepared for the worst from the start. After grabbing the silver scalpel, I ignored the scorching heat and forcibly pulled it out, immediately tossing it aside.
The chaotic information in my head was overwhelming, causing my head to split with pain. But the instant the scalpel left the Inner Eye, the burning sensation and the noise abruptly vanished. Even the scalpel felt cold when I picked it up, a stark contrast to the moment before it was removed.
I had no time for further thought and immediately shouted to Via, “Via, heal her!”
“Neco’s Curse!” Blood light flashed between Via’s hands as she unleashed a Vampire spell. This was a healing technique exclusive to the Undead, also effective on Heroic Spirits and souls.
Receiving the treatment, Via’s head began to heal immediately. The severed brain regrew, followed by the regeneration of her skull and scalp. Soon, Lorna looked just like she did before the surgery.
“Wait! How did you heal her completely? The surgery had painstakingly opened up her brain!” Amelia exclaimed anxiously.
Her words came too late. Via had already finished healing Lorna. I looked back; it seemed Samantha had managed to calm her down at this point, clearing away the foreign magic.
“There’s nothing we can do. In the rush, who knew what to do? You couldn’t even confirm if you had harmed Lorna’s brain, and with this Inner Eye causing such severe mental pollution upon mere contact, how could we possibly continue the surgery?” I retorted.
The feeling of touching the scalpel earlier left me with lingering fear. It was as if I had touched a branding iron. In all the surgeries I had performed, this was an unprecedented experience. I believed that Amelia, who bore the brunt of it, likely had an even more profound impression.
Amelia fell silent. Indeed, she didn’t know what to do either. Strictly speaking, neither of us had touched the Inner Eye itself. We had only slightly grazed the surrounding nerve tissues and already suffered such a severe shock. How were we supposed to surgically remove the Inner Eye?
Amelia couldn’t come up with a solution, remaing silent after I raised my questions. Finally, she had to admit she was helpless. This surgery was a complete failure from start to finish.
However, for me, at least Lorna’s life was saved. This surgery was just a preliminary test. Until I could find a way to counter the Inner Eye, I would not attempt to save her again.
Finally, Amelia could only dejectedly pack up the surgical instruments. But as she was tidying the tray, she froze, staring at a mass of soul body inside.
It was Lorna’s removed skull, placed on the tray. I had intended to reattach it after the surgery. However, because Via was so worried about Lorna, she had unleashed an overloaded Blood Magic, Neco’s Curse, causing her scalp to regenerate directly. This left the original part as an excess.
Having lost its connection to the main body, this soul mass could no longer maintain the shape of the scalp, and it slowly began to revert into a pure pool of soul. Yes, truly a pool, composed of pure soul energy, with no impurities.
Lorna probably wouldn’t need it anymore; she now had a complete head, identical to before. Thinking this, I collected the remaining soul energy and stored it in a small bottle, perhaps for some unexpected use in the future.
Shortly after we finished packing, Samantha woke Lorna up. As soon as she opened her eyes, her gaze was unfocused, her expression contorted. “Parul (Sister), those noises are still there. Am I not healed?”
“I’m sorry, we did our best, but the Inner Eye carries a strong mental pollution. We couldn’t remove it for the time being. We’ll have to find a method later to treat it. I apologize for putting you through all this.” I apologized to Lorna.
Hearing the cause and effect of the surgery, Lorna’s disappointment was palpable. She had expected to wake up completely healed.
But she still mustered the strength to say, “It’s okay. Thank you for helping me wholeheartedly, Parul (Sister). I know it can’t be helped if it can’t be cured. Worst case, I can just go back to my coffin for a while.”
What an understanding child. Before Lorna could finish speaking, Older Brother Jayad embraced her. Lorna’s expression visibly softened. In Older Brother Jayad’s embrace, the external intrusive whispers and noises were also blocked out, granting her a moment of tranquility.
Having experienced something similar myself, I understood how agonizing chaotic whispers and information streams could be, which made me understand Lorna’s helplessness.
