Chapter 1467: Penetrating the Barrier
The Tsarist Russian Embassy was a Russian-style building situated on the edge of the palace. A duplex castle made of red brick, it featured up to seven prominent white domes and Slav-style long floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows, forming an embassy that resembled a church.
The Hessen family, as expected from their generations of intermarriage with the Romanov dynasty, had built an embassy for Tsarist Russia that was far more luxurious than those of other countries around it, even including its own church.
It was no wonder that when the Tsarist Russian envoy came to seek an audience that day, he brought an ice mage and a church nun as escorts. However, this created trouble for our infiltration. The embassy was surrounded by a very strong barrier.
It was not impossible for me to forcefully break through it, but if I forcibly broke through, those inside would be alerted by an alarm, and a stronger barrier would be deployed, ruining the secret infiltration.
Therefore, I needed a more meticulous infiltration method, one that could open a gap in the barrier without damaging it, allowing me to enter silently.
“Are you ready, Parul (Sister)? Do you need me to help you open the barrier? I’ve already gone in a few times,” Giselle said with a smile, once again showing off her abilities.
“No, I’ll do it myself this time,” I replied. Since Giselle could do it, there was no reason why I couldn’t, especially since she had already demonstrated it to me.
As the Murder Church, specializing in assassination, we had certainly considered how to break through barriers if a target was protected by one. We had various methods for assassination, from props to spells.
I approached the barrier, chose an inconspicuous spot, and placed my hand in front of it, stopping just short of touching it. I used my senses to feel the barrier’s operation.
My Spirit Vision was exceptionally high, giving me great insight into perceiving the barrier’s structure. Soon, I easily understood the barrier’s operational principles, its magical properties, frequency, and more. Everything was clear at a glance.
Then, I forced Murder’s Divine Power from my palm into the barrier. The previously transparent and invisible barrier suddenly had a large darkened patch, like a black floating wall appearing in the air.
Normally, a barrier invaded by foreign magical energy would emit an alarm. However, this was Murder’s Divine Spell, specifically designed for infiltrating barriers, allowing magical energy to penetrate without triggering any reaction.
But this alone was not enough. If I tried to go through now, the barrier would still trigger an alarm. Therefore, I needed to be able to control the barrier to a certain degree. This process is called synchronization.
Simply put, after perceiving the barrier’s frequency, I would manually adjust the frequency of the penetrating magical energy to match that of the barrier. This would allow me to control the portion of the barrier that had been penetrated.
This step was very meticulous, but I completed it with ease. As Murder’s Divine Power synchronized with the barrier’s magical energy, the darkened section of the barrier opened a small gap.
“Impressive! You succeeded on the first try. Even I had to attempt it three or more times the first time I faced this barrier. Parul (Sister), do you perhaps have great potential in practicing with Murder’s Divine Spell?” Giselle exclaimed from the side.
“Enough chatter, let’s go in,” I urged her. What Giselle didn’t know was that I could synchronize with the barrier faster than her, likely because my Spiritual Sense was stronger than hers, allowing me to perceive faster and more accurately.
Giselle moved with incredible agility and leaped through the small opening like a black cat, landing in the embassy courtyard without triggering any alarms.
I flew over as well. When I looked back, the hole in the barrier had disappeared. It wasn’t that the effect of penetrating the barrier had ended, but rather that when no one was touching the barrier, Murder’s Divine Spell would conceal the opened gap to prevent unauthorized individuals from discovering the entrance and exposing our target.
Furthermore, it left a way out. I needed to remember the position of this gap in the barrier so that if something went wrong, I could escape directly through it.
“Next, I suggest we climb to the roof and enter through a skylight. The defenses there are weaker, making invasion easier. I’ve entered through there several times before,” Giselle said.
“Alright, I’ll follow your lead.” I spread my wings and flew at a low altitude, following Giselle across the embassy courtyard.
Don’t be fooled by Giselle’s similar movement speed to mine; I was flying low, while she was treading on the grass. Giselle constantly changed her direction, sometimes taking two steps back and three forward, or moving diagonally.
My Spirit Vision could see that she wasn’t moving randomly. The ground was covered with the spiritual light of various traps, some of which were not magical traps but purely physical mechanisms.
In fact, I thought these purely physical mechanisms were the real threat, while the seemingly grand magical barriers were designed to conceal these physical mechanisms.
If one saw so many magical traps and relied too heavily on detecting magic or sensing magical energy while neglecting the reconnaissance of ordinary traps, they might make a wrong step, and all their efforts would be in vain.
However, Giselle was clearly very familiar with this place. She didn’t need to look carefully; it was as if she already knew the location of these traps. With just a few steps, she bypassed all the traps and arrived in front of one of the embassy’s walls.
Giselle immediately started climbing like a monkey, agile and nimble ascended the outer wall of the castle serving as the embassy, while I had it much easier, directly flying up.
Soon, we reached the third floor, on top of the roof of a side hall of the castle. Influenced by Orthodox Christianity, Russians loved building prominent domes, creating onion-shaped domes on the roofs. The embassy castle had at least five.
Next to one of these domes was a small window. It should have been locked, but it wasn’t. I deduced that Giselle hadn’t closed the window securely during her last infiltration, making it convenient for her return.
“Parul (Sister), you can go down from here.” Giselle pulled open the skylight. Frankly, I wanted to try out my lock-picking skills, but there was no time to waste.
Below the skylight was a crossbeam. All we needed to do was to jump onto it. After landing on the crossbeam, I had the chance to look at the internal structure of the embassy.
This appeared to be a hall that resembled a church. However, unlike traditional Catholic churches, there were no pews inside. Everyone either stood or knelt to pray to God.
The entire church was magnificent, clearly indicating wealth. The floor was covered with a very large carpet, and on either side were numerous shrines made of spiritual materials. The pillars were adorned with exquisite carvings and murals.
We were standing on a crossbeam in the hall. This crossbeam provided access in all directions, and hanging from it were chandeliers, golden birdcages, and other strange decorative items like memorial urns, suspended by chains.
