Chapter 1590: Exile
It was the people from the Seven Gods Church back then who insisted that the werewolves had to be exiled, forcing the Duke to drive away his mistress. He only secretly kept Weis to raise her, wanting his daughter to have a better life and not to burden his lover.
“Heh, so you’re saying I can’t even keep my own home?” Weis said in a low voice. One impulsive act had ruined her home.
“I’m very sorry. If the Duke had an illegitimate werewolf daughter, it would be a huge scandal for the Hessen family. Although it might be a bit harsh for you, I also believe you should be allowed to leave freely.” The Archmage spoke tactfully, but the meaning was the same.
Now both the Archmage and the Seven Gods Priest agreed to exile Weis. They were the advisor on occultism and the church representative, respectively. They actually represented the general opinion of the courtiers. The fact that Weis was a werewolf could not be made public, so this secret would likely not be revealed.
“Wait a moment, are you deciding this just like that? Shouldn’t you ask Father first?” Reya wanted to struggle a bit more. She felt the Duke would make a different choice, especially since he was the one who insisted on keeping his daughter back then.
“We will report to the Duke, but even the Duke probably cannot change this decision, just like back then,” the old man said.
If the Duke truly had the courage to do as he pleased, he wouldn’t have banished his lover back then. Even keeping his daughter was done in secret, not daring to let anyone know their relationship. The Archmage had participated in the construction of the underground hiding place.
Compared to the family and his own reputation, his daughter was clearly not that important. After all, the Duke had several daughters. Those who were married off were married off, and Weis was long past the age where she could leave home.
Just as they were about to continue talking, a guard suddenly shouted from outside the room, “Master, something seems to have happened downstairs!”
“Didn’t I tell you not to come up now? Let those ministers and knights decide if there’s anything. Get lost!” The Archmage shouted sternly. Their conversation with the werewolf must absolutely not be leaked to their subordinates.
“Yes!” Seeing how angry and furious the Archmage was, the guard fled as if scrambling. The Seven Gods Priest also paid no mind. The werewolf had already been captured, so what major problem could there be? Those Imperial Guards should be able to handle it.
However, within a few minutes, a commotion arose from downstairs, along with soldiers’ shouts. I glanced at the source of the commotion with my God’s Eye and immediately showed a confused expression. Why was she here?
“What’s going on?!” The Archmage lost his patience this time. Soon, another guard ran over and said, “There are many werewolves downstairs, and they’ve broken into the city!”
“Then organize the army to counterattack! They’re just a bunch of normal werewolves!” the Archmage said angrily.
Clearly, through some long-range detection magic, he knew that the attackers were ordinary werewolves. Werewolves of this level could carry out surprise attacks on individuals, but once surrounded by a well-trained army equipped with Standard Weaponry, they were as good as dead.
“But the soldiers all suddenly fell gravely ill, so they have no Combat Power now, and many have been bitten by werewolves!” the guard said in a panic. From outside, the sound of wolf howls and screams was already clear as he spoke.
The Seven Gods Priest and the Archmage immediately turned their attention to Karina, who had been continuously reducing her presence. It was she who had spread the plague during the battle.
This was an extremely Terrifying Ability, randomly inflicting diseases on all enemies within a Range. Initially, it might just be a rash, cough, or sneeze, which would then quickly develop into pneumonia, dysentery, or avian flu. If they remained within the Spell’s Range, smallpox, cholera, malaria, and hemorrhagic fever would follow, and all of them at once.
During the Middle Ages, when cults were most rampant, all churches and kings had a consensus: never try to besiege believers of Evil Gods with plague authority like Beelzebub, Abaddon, or Nurgle. They could easily paralyze tens of thousands of troops with disease.
The crucial point was that if these soldiers were wiped out on the spot, it would be one thing. But if they weren’t all killed, that would be a disaster. The plague would not disappear with the owner’s death. When the surviving soldiers returned, the catastrophe would have just begun.
Germs would follow them and spread as they moved, eventually leading to millions or even tens of millions of people falling ill, and plagues running rampant. History had recorded many such incidents.
Moreover, many such plague believers knew their advantage. They resided in densely populated areas of large cities. If someone tried to assassinate them, all the Commoners in the city, and even a wider area, would be their hostages.
If it weren’t for the fact that medical treatment in this world was also exceptionally powerful due to metaphysics, and that there were many occult Rituals to quell plagues, great chaos would have already erupted.
This was why I was so against the Church of Gluttony using plagues. Once released, they were difficult to control and could easily cause widespread disaster.
Furthermore, it was extremely inhumane because people who died of plague suffered far more than those killed by swords. Unfortunate souls might endure months of torment, watching themselves waste away, grow weak, feel discomfort all over, yet be helpless, only able to watch themselves die.
“I’ve already recalled all the Germs, and I guarantee they weren’t lethal diseases. Originally, it was just a minor illness that needed a day or two to recover. I didn’t know werewolves would attack,” Karina explained immediately.
This was true. I could confirm that she had released only mild, non-lethal Germs, and she had already recalled them all when Weis and I were fighting. This was also one of her Abilities.
Everyone immediately looked at Weis again. It was possible that she had organized the werewolf invasion. But Weis shook her head and said, “I didn’t call them. However, they should indeed be coming for me. Nearby werewolves all want to obtain my Fenrir bloodline. You should have foreseen this situation when the giant wolf killer was released.”
“There’s no choice. Let’s go out and deal with those werewolves first!” the Archmage said through gritted teeth to the Seven Gods Priest. If the Duke’s Palace were actually breached by werewolves, it would be a huge joke.
“It’s fine. Just a few werewolves, we can handle them,” the Warrior said. After all, they were just ordinary werewolves, no match for them.
The Archmage still followed. As they left, Reya felt restless. She didn’t know what to say to her sister or how to make her stay.
Just then, a shadow in the corner suddenly darkened, and a wolf-like figure rushed out of the shadow, grabbed Weis, and intended to flee.
“Swish!” A light rope instantly appeared and bound the wolf-like figure. Inside, a Werewolf Girl whom I had seen not long ago was revealed, and the Archmage had instantly teleported back into the room.
