Chapter 1759: Done For
“This kind of attack is meaningless!” the Lich roared with laughter, swinging its magic sword. Dark red light coiled around its hand and flowed onto the mummy, creeping over its rags and cracked body.
The Lich didn’t possess sword skills like blocking bullets with a swing of its sword. In reality, its swordsmanship was quite poor, having barely practiced. However, that magic sword was incredibly powerful. A single sweep of its energy completely blocked all the bullets in front of it.
I gave a slight smile. Just as the Lich thought this round of attack had been blocked, all the bullets suddenly exploded, and bright Holy Light tore through the dark red sword energy.
“Ah!!!” The Lich let out a scream. Logically, mummies shouldn’t have pain receptors, but a large amount of Holy Fire, bursting from the bullets, burned its body and even seared its soul.
Even though it swung its magic sword, attempting to suppress the Holy Fire, it could only control the flames, not extinguish them completely.
That’s right, this was my secret weapon: exorcism bullets made from mercury bullets, with the blood of Older Brother Jayad as the raw material. Their power was much stronger than ordinary exorcism bullets, and they also carried the Divine Power characteristic of Older Brother. While Brother was somewhat restricted due to severe mutations, making it difficult for him to fight freely, these bullets could act in his stead without any side effects.
Because the side effects were borne by the enemy, the mummy that had been sprayed with Jayad’s blood actually regained some life in its long-dried flesh, even growing dark yellow tentacles that began attacking the mummy’s main body.
This ability to revitalize ancient mummified corpses and make old trees bloom anew was almost a miracle, truly bringing the dead back to life and regenerating flesh and bone. However, the mummy remained a mummified corpse overall, with only a portion of its body developing flesh, blood, and tentacles. It looked incredibly bizarre and terrifying.
The Lich was still struggling, its body constantly shifting between firelight, ethereal blue, and dark red as it vied for control. Tentacles sprouted, withered, and then new flesh buds emerged from the mummified corpse, a truly horrifying sight.
I felt this temporary body was beyond saving. At this moment, Older Brother Jayad had already moved on to deal with its phylactery. He first tried several Divine Spells, including Ultimate Holy Slash, but none had any effect on the phylactery.
Finally, Older Brother Jayad noticed the wax seal on the jar. The lid, sealed with solidified corpse oil, was etched with complex wax imprints, covered in ancient Egyptian text and undead symbols.
This was precisely what the Gravedigger had mentioned, the restrictive runes and crests on the phylactery that would bind the soul. Jayad thought that simply destroying these patterns would release the Lich’s soul.
Jayad glanced back at the situation and saw that his younger sister had suppressed the Lich with bullets made from her own blood. He immediately snapped his fingers, and the Holy Fire on the Lich intensified, as if igniting a gas tank.
Jayad then calmly took out the Ruby Shortsword. He first made several slashes on the wax seal, defacing the runes and text with the sealing wax. Then, he began to pry at the wax seal with the shortsword.
One had to admit the sharpness of the Ruby Shortsword, which became incredibly keen after being imbued with Holy Light. Coupled with Jayad’s immense strength, a few slashes actually pierced the wax seal.
Next, he used the sword like a can opener, cutting a semi-circle along the edge of the wax seal, and began to pry with all his might, successfully opening the seal.
Perhaps realizing the danger to its phylactery, the Lich ignored the raging Holy Fire on its body and charged desperately towards the ashes jar. However, the girls took turns attacking it, preventing the Lich from interfering with Jayad.
Jayad’s movements were also swift. After prying open the wax seal, he didn’t care what was inside the jar and immediately thrust his dagger into it, pouring a large amount of Holy Fire inside.
“Boom!” The ash jar exploded as if filled with fuel. A large surge of Holy Fire erupted from within, along with a damaged, distorted soul. It was ablaze, emitting a pained scream, and was sucked into the Ruby Shortsword.
“Ah!!!” The Lich cried out in pain, seemingly suffering a massive blow. It could no longer sustain its magic to resist the Holy Flame. Instantly, the Holy Flame engulfed the mummy, burning it to ashes. The magic sword fell to the ground.
“Did… did we succeed?” Sherris looked at the pile of ashes on the ground, her breath ragged. She had depleted too much magic in this battle and immediately began consuming magic potions upon seeing the fight was over.
The Lich possessed a profound understanding of magic. We were at a disadvantage when confronting it, often being counteracted by its spells. Among us, only Via, with her vast magical power and control over Blood Magic, could hold her own.
In the recent battle, if it hadn’t been for my surprise attack using the exorcism bullets for a round of Holy Fire cleansing, it would have been difficult to even keep the Lich at bay. That magic sword was truly too powerful.
“It should be dead. Its phylactery was destroyed by Older Brother Jayad, so the Lich is definitely dead. Via, go rescue Giselle, and Lorna, go rescue the Gravedigger.” I instructed them to tend to the wounded. I then approached the magic sword, wanting to pick it up and examine it.
“No! Don’t touch it! That magic sword is problematic, it corrupts its owner!” the Gravedigger said urgently from his position on the ground, panting for breath.
I immediately hesitated. Although his strength wasn’t great, he was knowledgeable and had extensive understanding of undead lore. Moreover, this statement wasn’t without basis; throughout history, many magic swords had been known to corrupt their owner’s mind or erode their flesh, causing mutations.
Just as I was contemplating how to research this magic sword, I suddenly felt something was wrong. My Sylph bracelet hadn’t been removed and still couldn’t be taken off. Normally, wouldn’t such a curse be lifted automatically upon destroying its source?
At this moment, the magic sword suddenly moved. It flew up on its own and landed in the hand of another mummy. Chains from the sword pierced the mummy’s body, some in its arms, others in its chest, like tubes being inserted.
What’s going on?! Does this magic sword have a will of its own? I looked at the mummy in shock, seeing pale blue ghost fire emanating from its hollow eyes. Then, it raised the magic sword and lunged at me.
I immediately raised my gun and aimed at the mummy, shooting. But this time, it didn’t dodge at all, allowing the exorcism bullets to hit its body as it charged straight at me.
I was careless. I had few bullets left after the previous barrage, and believing the Lich to be dead, I hadn’t reloaded. Ultimately, only four or five exorcism bullets struck the mummy’s chest.
I immediately deployed the Shield of the Twin Eagles, but the magic sword pierced it directly without any obstruction. Then, it went straight through my chest.
