Chapter 2467: Limitations of Time Reversal
“What is this?” Via’s Mother looked puzzled when I produced a broken watch that resembled a leather-wrapped heart. However, having once been a Demon Hunter, she knew that such strangely shaped items were most likely magic apparatus, and often particularly wicked ones at that.
“Time Reversal Device. You’ll know once you see it,” I said. This was indeed what I obtained from the Witch Society, and it was my most powerful magic apparatus. The price was too steep, so I rarely dared to use it, but now it was the only thing that might save Lavias.
“Time reversal? How can such a world-defying magic apparatus exist?!” Via’s Mother’s expression turned to horror. The female sniper looked equally shocked. They both knew how powerful a magic apparatus capable of reversing time would be.
“Actually, this thing has many limitations; it’s not as strong as you imagine. I’m not even sure if it will succeed, but it’s a case of ‘treating a dead horse as if it were alive’ now. Please stand back,” I said.
Though they hadn’t heard the idiom, they somehow grasped its meaning and moved a short distance away.
As I squeezed the leather heart, the three pieces of broken glass on the watch face popped up. Through the cracked lenses, I saw an empty cave.
There was no blood pool, no two female vampires. This was the state of the cave before we entered. What I needed to do now was to make a minute adjustment and set the starting point of the time reversal to the pool of Lavias’s residual fresh blood.
I slightly adjusted the pointer, and after seeing the blood pool in the fragmented mirror, I pressed the heart. Instantly, I felt a tremendous amount of magic power surge into the Time Reversal Device.
“What!? This magic power is terrifying!” Via’s Mother immediately sensed the terrifying surge of magic power, and the device’s range of influence quickly enveloped Lavias.
“Tsk! Don’t get too close. If you get caught within the range of this time reversal, I don’t know what will happen to you,” I gritted out, barely able to warn them as my magic power was being constantly drained.
Reviving Lavias this time was much more difficult than reviving the Glutton believer last time. First, Lavias was far stronger than an ordinary Glutton believer. The more potent the magic involved, the harder it was to reverse.
Furthermore, this was not the scene of Lavias’s death. I could only perform time reversal on a pool of blood, making the difficulty of successful revival even higher.
But I couldn’t stay there any longer. The Royal Knights and Clerics who were hunting down the remnants of the Death Trinity Church would undoubtedly detect such a powerful magic fluctuation and come to stop me.
Finally, the Glutton believer had merely gone from life to death. Lavias, however, was already dead to begin with. Moreover, the Glutton believer was only killed by being stuck in a stone wall, whereas Lavias was purified and died by Holy Light, with Tyr Divine Power as an added variable, making things even more difficult.
After reviving the Glutton believer, we questioned him. He stated that he had already ascended to the Divine Realm and it was Beelzebub who allowed him to return to the mortal world for revival; otherwise, the Time Reversal Device would not have been able to revive him.
However, vampires were an exception. They had no souls. The essence of vampires was undeath. They were either soulless zombies and skeletons or spirit bodies formed from condensed resentment. In the East, this was known as not entering the six realms or transcending the five elements, meaning they would never have the chance for rebirth or reincarnation.
It was said that vampires believed in various death gods precisely so that after their complete annihilation, their souls would be reassembled and ascend to the Divine Realm, thus preventing them from even becoming wandering spirits.
But no one had ever returned from the Divine Realm, so the idea that vampires could have souls that ascended to the Divine Realm was merely a conjecture, or even a fantasy.
I wasn’t sure if the Time Reversal Device could save things without souls, or if time reversal could repair souls. Ultimately, I lacked understanding of this device.
However, I did know that the Time Reversal Device wasn’t omnipotent. After obtaining it, I had studied it thoroughly. Especially since Via had also absorbed the blood of its previous owner, a Witch, and gained some memories.
First, anything involving gods couldn’t be reversed. For example, if a Divine Punishment struck someone dead, they couldn’t be resurrected. If a god bestowed Divine Favor upon someone, the Time Reversal Device couldn’t strip away that favor.
Next, certain predetermined destinies wouldn’t be changed or influenced. I didn’t quite understand this point – what was destiny or karma? I could only infer from Via’s relayed memories.
It was said that the Witches had records of an Assassin who, favored by an Outsider Demon, could maximize the functionality of this Time Reversal Device, even allowing himself to return to the past and change the future by altering the past.
However, some things were unchangeable. For instance, at that time, the Witch Society was summoning one of their leaders back to the present from the void. This was a predetermined reality.
The Assassin who returned to the past couldn’t change the reality of the Witch’s successful summoning, nor could he disrupt the ritual site. The Witch Society leader could even sense the disturbance in time and detect the Assassin traversing time.
I hadn’t witnessed it firsthand, so I couldn’t ascertain the specific circumstances. I wasn’t a Divine Favorite of an Outsider Demon either, so I couldn’t maximize the Time Reversal Device’s potential. But Lavias still had a sliver of hope, making it worth a try.
However, I had one more advantage regarding the cost: there was a Tyr Paladin’s corpse in my stomach. I had swallowed it whole with the Great Devourment technique, but I didn’t want to eat people, so I endured and hadn’t digested it.
Now was the perfect time. Didn’t the Time Reversal Device require magic power? I could directly use the Tyr Paladin’s. His magic power was quite substantial.
In fact, its cost wasn’t just magic power; it also caused physical damage. The original owner, the Witch, dared to use it so carelessly only because of her Undead body.
Now, it was a coincidence. The Tyr Paladin’s corpse could also serve as the price. Since the person was already dead, desecrating the corpse further shouldn’t matter, right?
Soon, the blood pool showed signs of activity. A large amount of blood disappeared, and the blood pool rapidly shrank. That was the blood of the monsters Lavias had absorbed later, unrelated to him personally, and it was being excluded by the time reversal.
Next, the residual bit of dead blood slowly increased, and its aura gradually strengthened. I attempted to reverse it to the time when Lavias was still alive and within the blood pool.
The Tyr Paladin’s corpse was quickly and completely consumed, leaving not even a speck of dust. This indicated the difficulty of reviving Lavias. The remaining magic power and price had to be provided by myself.
But at least I could see the hope of success. As the clock hands completed their final circle, I clearly felt that the remaining bit of blood was emitting Lavias’s aura, and even consciousness!
