The Little Witch’s Daily Struggle – Chapter 384

Chapter 384 – Another Ghoul Sighting

The tomb was as dark and dry as it had been a few days ago, though the stench of decay in the air had considerably lessened. There should have been many ghouls eating flesh here before, but unexpectedly, the stench had faded within days of the ghoul clan’s annihilation.

“No, where are the bones and scraps of meat on the ground? There used to be a lot of leftover food discarded on the ground,” Sherris said vigilantly, her eyes fixed on the ground.

The habits of these ghouls were somewhat disgusting, leaving their leftover food everywhere. Ghouls loved eating corpses, but their digestive capabilities were not very good, otherwise, they wouldn’t look so gaunt. The one in the Gluttony Sect had to rely on faith in Beelzebub to increase his appetite.

They wouldn’t find that rotten smell unpleasant either; they might even consider it a delicious aroma. Sherris was no exception. This was truly a racial difference, something “I” found hard to accept.

“It was eaten by the Black Silk Monster. It seems to consume and digest all organic matter, so be careful,” Sebastian said.

The Formless Children consume all inorganic matter? Then “I” was worried. It wouldn’t have eaten Lorna’s remains, would it? If so, wouldn’t all their efforts have been in vain?

With a sense of unease, “we” walked into the tomb’s corridor. “We” looked around, and it seemed no different from “our” last visit. Even the traces of the previous battle remained, but the Black Silk Monster had disappeared, and the ghouls’ corpses were nowhere to be seen.

The entire tomb was enveloped in an unsettling and bizarre silence, as if no living creature resided within. Combined with it being a tomb, it was even more creepy.

However, Sherris showed no fear. Logically, a little girl like her, trapped in such a narrow and claustrophobic tomb, should have been trembling in fear. But she acted as if she were at home, checking each tomb chamber one by one.

Firstly, this was indeed partly Sherris’s home, as she had visited often before. Secondly, she had never seen the Formless Children and didn’t know how terrifying it was. If anything, Sherris was eager to find her father’s killer and fight it to the death.

The problem was, the Black Silk Monster was nowhere to be seen. Had it already escaped?

“Older Brother Jayad, can you sense the Black Silk Monster?” “I” asked. Having Evil Perception was quite good, at least “I” wouldn’t fear ambushes.

“Yes, it’s still in the deepest part of the tomb, lurking there. Its aura is stable, seemingly asleep?” Jayad also replied with some uncertainty, “Either way, there are no signs of activity.”

“I see. When we get closer, if it’s asleep, we’ll strike first together. If not, we’ll find a way to lure it outside to fight,” Sebastian outlined the combat plan. “We” all nodded.

Since “we” knew where the enemy was, “we” didn’t need to search house by house. “We” headed directly for the deepest part of the tomb.

But as “we” neared the end, “we” saw a figure lying in the dark corridor, with a beautiful colorful wing trailing beside it. This figure looked so familiar.

“Mother!” Sherris shouted instantly. Before “we” could react, she pounced forward and hugged the figure.

The lights turned on, revealing the person lying on the ground. It was the Female Ghoul, and she was still in her human form, though her body was stained with blood, seemingly severely injured.

She wasn’t dead? “I” remembered that when “we” escaped, she was already cornered at the doorway by the Formless Children. Sebastian instinctively exclaimed, “Careful! It might be a trap!”

But Sherris ignored him and immediately threw herself onto the Female Ghoul, crying out, “Mother! Mother! Wake up! Mother!”

Jayad, however, frowned. “No, there’s no evil aura on her! She’s not your mother!”

As Jayad spoke, he lunged towards Sherris. Almost at the same moment he moved, the Female Ghoul stirred. Her colorful wings suddenly raised, and countless scales shot out in all directions.

Sebastian wanted to save Sherris, but upon seeing those scales, his expression changed. He immediately turned and teleported away with Claire.

“Damn it! He left so quickly. What about me, left behind? And Jayad rushed over, with Sherris so close by. She’s about to face a barrage of scales.”

At this critical juncture, Jayad grabbed Sherris and, turning around, held her tightly in his arms, shielding her with his own body. Countless scales pierced his back.

“Boom!” The launched scales instantly exploded. Although it wasn’t a large-scale detonation, the power of these individual explosions was more terrifying for armor penetration. The Female Ghoul had used this move to hold off the Formless Children for a long time. It was precisely because she ran out of feathers that “we” couldn’t endure any longer.

“Ugh!” Jayad let out a pained cry. His entire body was enveloped in the protection of Holy Light, yet he was still blown away, rolling a couple of times on the ground.

Sherris, held and protected in Jayad’s arms, and “I”, whom he had deliberately shielded, were unharmed after the explosion. The surrounding walls and ceiling were pockmarked by the scales.

“Older Brother Jayad!” “I” rushed over anxiously. “I” saw that Jayad’s back was covered in scars, his clothes tattered, and in many places, his flesh was torn open.

“Let, let go of me! Mother! Why is Mother hitting me?” Sherris cried. At this moment, it was evident that she was indeed a young girl, her temperament not yet mature.

“Calm down! That’s not your mother anymore!” Jayad shouted loudly. Listening to his energetic shout, it seemed his internal organs were unharmed, and the injuries were just superficial but looked terrifying.

“Impossible, she’s clearly my mother, I wouldn’t mistake her!” Sherris struggled desperately, even trying to claw at Jayad, but she was blocked by the Holy Light.

At this moment, the Female Ghoul stood up unsteadily, raised her wings, and the colorful scales on them stood on end, shimmering with a colorful radiance under the firelight. This was clearly a sign of her preparing to attack again!

“Invisible Hand!” “I” pointed my magic wand, and two invisible insect legs suddenly appeared, pinning the Female Ghoul to the ground. “I” also made sure to pin her wings down.

“Don’t attack Mother!” Sherris was still shouting.

“She’s not your mother anymore! She’s just a shell! She doesn’t even have an evil aura! She’s not even the same kind of being as you!” Jayad roared back with a voice louder than Sherris’s.

She wasn’t even an evil creature. “I” hadn’t expected Jayad to discover the flaw in such a way. Ghouls were, of course, evil creatures. Then what was she, if she had no evil aura?

You hear the penny-dreadful tales, don’t you? Souls whisked off to other worlds, landing in lives of ease and splendor. Reborn as young lords in grand manors, with enchanted baubles at their fingertips or a spectral mentor whispering secrets. But my own ‘grand arrival’? No gentle angel to light the path. Instead, a repulsive, foul deity—some forgotten horror from a darker age—claimed me. I was tormented to the very edge of oblivion, then pitched into a twisted, gaslit world of shadows and fear. I awoke in the frail body of an orphan girl, shivering in some rat-infested rookery, choked by smog and despair. Weak, plagued by illness, with a hunger that gnawed relentlessly. My new story didn’t start from scratch; it began deep in the dregs, clawing my way up from less than nothing.” Now, all I fight for is to live, to see another grimy sunrise over these cobbled streets. Not just for my own skin, but for him—the one whose fate is tangled with mine, the one soul I cling to in this godforsaken, fog-drenched city.
