Chapter 407: Live a Low-Profile Life
I’m already quite used to their way of speaking only half the story. In fact, I never intended for Jayad to infiltrate the Church, nor did I have any idea how to do it. But I said it anyway, leaving him to guess the specifics.
As expected, Lavias’s expression was one of clear astonishment. How he managed to get a spy within the Church was beyond his comprehension, but precisely because he didn’t understand, it felt even more impressive.
“As expected of the Saintess. Your foresight is truly remarkable. This way, we’ll be privy to all the movements of those lackeys of the Church,” Lavias said. For a moment, he even thought of further uses, such as issuing false orders from within or having him act as a shield to distract the Church’s forces during a crisis.
“Lavias, you’ve traveled a long way. Do you have a place to stay?” I asked, steering the conversation away from Jayad.
“Yes, I do. I’ll be staying with some of my juniors for now. Here’s the address. If the Saintess needs any help, you can find me there by showing this badge.” Lavias handed me a scroll.
I held it with my insect legs and unrolled it. It was a map of the western district of Cando City. One spot was circled, marked as Falbedy Cemetery, with a specific tombstone number indicated.
I couldn’t help but smile. Vampires really do live in graves; it suits him. But Lavias asked confusedly, “Saintess, what’s so funny about that?”
“It’s nothing, just that the Church’s patrols might be quite strict lately. You should be cautious in your actions too,” I reminded him. I was actually worried he might cause some trouble.
Of course, my words weren’t baseless. I had personally witnessed the Church encircling and suppressing Otherworldly beings before, and it wasn’t even the Christianity faction, but a group of Paladins from the Church of the Dawn Lord.
I was just walking on the road at the time, on my way to buy some cheap meat from the market and thinking about what dish Jayad would like tonight. Suddenly, there was a loud explosion ahead.
More than a dozen warriors clad in leather armor, plate armor, and chain mail suddenly burst out from various corners, some even leaping from rooftops, charging towards a woman in the middle of the street who appeared entirely ordinary.
In truth, I could feel a strong Otherworldly aura emanating from her. She was definitely not human, merely disguised as a common citizen. Even I couldn’t see through her true form.
After being surrounded, the woman suddenly grew larger, transforming into a ten-foot-tall black giant. She looked like she was covered in black feathers and bone armor, with ten arms, each holding a greatsword. These greatswords were all adorned with colorful enchantments.
This female Otherworldly being was skilled in swordsmanship. She wielded her ten greatswords with impeccable defense, trying to break through. The surrounding warriors immediately pursued and besieged her.
It was then, through their Holy Light, that I realized most of these individuals were Paladins, with a few other classes assisting, seemingly mercenaries. There were also two archers on the upper floors.
As soon as the fighting started, the surrounding civilians immediately scattered and took cover behind obstacles. However, they didn’t panic excessively or cause a major disturbance. Instead, after taking cover, they peered out to watch, as if the commoners were very accustomed to street brawls and found it commonplace.
The nameless Otherworldly being, whose existence wasn’t in my brain’s knowledge, displayed incredible combat power in her final struggle, even injuring a few Paladins. But ultimately, she was overwhelmed and killed.
Afterward, soldiers arrived. The Church of Dawn seemed to have made arrangements with the Lord, as they exchanged a few words and left with the Otherworldly corpse, leaving guards to maintain order.
Those like myself, who already carried burdens within, naturally became even more cautious. Thankfully, I was originally human and hadn’t done anything wrong usually, besides accidentally starting a fire last time. I shouldn’t be so easily targeted by the Church.
But recently, due to the worsening of my corruption, the Lord has been frequently strengthening management. A large number of Church personnel and Demon Hunters have begun patrolling everywhere.
The situation where streets and alleys were filled with unhidden Otherworldly beings, as I experienced shortly after my transmigration, has decreased significantly. Most have become more restrained, and some particularly conspicuous supernatural locations have been cleared by Church personnel.
So, I reminded Lavias not to be too flashy upon arrival and attract the Church’s attention. If he were to be encircled and suppressed, how would I explain it at the meeting? It would also divert the attention of those cultists to Cando City.
“Thank you for the reminder, Saintess. I will be mindful. My primary purpose for this trip is to find my daughter, and secondarily to assist with your actions. Of course, I will act discreetly. I’ll enter the city through underground channels tonight.” Lavias stated.
Underground channels? He uttered another term I didn’t quite understand. Was it referring to some dark, secret channels for smuggling him in, or a physically underground passage, perhaps a secret tunnel dug directly into Cando City? Or both?
“Speaking of which, Saintess, in your current state, you’re likely to attract the attention of those hounds, aren’t you? Would you like to enter the city with me? We can look out for each other,” Lavias asked.
“I have my own ways; you don’t need to worry about that,” I replied, looking at my own various mutations. I was already a mess, and at this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if I grew a fly’s head.
“Oh, right. Of course, the Saintess has her methods of concealing herself. I was overthinking it.” Lavias slapped his forehead. He was a bit taken aback by my current horrifying appearance. Thinking back, during the meeting, the Saintess looked like a normal girl, with no signs of any mutation. He was indeed worrying unnecessarily.
Actually, I didn’t have any special methods. I was just gambling on the Pope’s words being true. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have any hope of recovery.
At this moment, we finally reached the last dwelling. All the way here, Lavias had watched as I purified the entire village. By the end, there were no followers of Xath’gwa left. It seemed Moore hadn’t managed to recruit many people, otherwise, he wouldn’t have been ostracized by the villagers.
This should be the last house. I pulled up the final person and sacrificed the Formless Children within them. Instantly, an unprecedented amount of massive magic power surged into my body.
I received a new blessing, a reward for sacrificing a large number of Formless Children. It was a support-type spell. However, my body had already reached the critical point of mutation. I had a feeling that if my mutation deepened any further, I would completely break away from the human race.
However, the magic power wasn’t solely for me. As if sensing Lavias’s presence beside me, the Divine Seal split off a portion of the magic power and flowed towards him.
“Huh?” Lavias was completely taken by surprise. He hadn’t expected that simply observing from the side would count as being an assistant, allowing him to receive a reward as well. As the colossal surge of magic power entered him, he was rendered speechless.
When the radiance of the Divine Seal dimmed, Lavias’s eyes were filled with ecstatic joy.
