Chapter 487: The Strange Sickness Returns
Understood. I understand now. The problem was still with the birdcage all along. Cover the birdcage with a black cloth, and the birds inside won’t be able to see what’s happening outside.
If I were originally a sharp-sighted and intelligent bird, seeing my master outside boiling water, sharpening knives, or watching bird-cooking shows, I’d know he might want to stew us and would warn the other birds.
Now that the birdcage is covered with a black cloth, I can’t see anything and naturally lose my ability to warn. However, I can still hear the sounds outside through the cloth, and Shaien is now very interested in that music that can only be described as noise.
“Alright, I hope this is useful. I’ll have to rely on you for hypnosis again,” I said, and consciously lay down on the stone platform once more.
I don’t know if they truly researched the flaws from my last dream or if they considered it should be more comfortable for the dreamer. This time, the stone platform was covered with a bedsheet and a pillow was provided. Lying down was much more comfortable. Good job.
“This pillow enhances inspiration, and the bedsheet is painted with a magic circle that collects and amplifies signals. This time, you should be able to see even the most subtle fates,” the Queen of the Insects explained.
Fine, my gratitude was misplaced. It turns out these mind parasites know nothing about humanization or comfort; they only consider how to increase the success rate of the ritual, even by a little. But at least it accidentally made me more comfortable.
Jayad held the External Brain, looking at me with some worry. I smiled at him, indicating that I was fine. I had already had a dream once before; what was so bad about having another one?
After I lay down, one of the Shaggai Wormfolk brought a blank dream card. I faintly heard someone whispering among the nearby Shaggai Wormfolk, “This is the highest-grade dream card. Theoretically, it can even imprint the image of gods, and its usage is infinite. Is it necessary to use the highest-grade dream card?”
“You don’t understand. If this is truly a prophetic dream, then what is one highest-grade blank dream card?” the Shaggai Wormgirl I knew before replied.
The dream card was placed on my forehead, and then the Queen of the Insects’ eyes once again emitted a blue, dreamy light. I slowly sank into the dreamland again.
This time, it wasn’t complete darkness. I saw a scarlet hue, and piercing music echoed in my ears, chaotic and almost without melody. Then, countless scenes flashed before my eyes.
I saw an endless sea of stars, which then rapidly shrank, concentrating on a giant blood moon. There was a lake on the blood moon, and within the lake, there seemed to be some invisible, irregular shadow.
Instinctively, I felt that the inside of the lake was a dream, the universe I was in was also a dream, and perhaps outside of this dream were more dreams. In any case, it was a very unreal feeling, as if even I myself were just a dream.
Just as I was about to get lost, a force suddenly warmed my body, pulling me back from the ethereal. It was somewhat similar to the Queen of the Insects’ mental power, possibly a protective measure of the Shaggai Wormfolk taking effect.
I want to see the truth. As I thought this, the surrounding music suddenly became structured. Although it was still noisy and disturbing, it at least had a discernible rhythm.
Finally, when I looked up, I saw an indescribable monster emerging from the center of the blood moon. The blood moon was already flowing with black liquid, and it felt as if the monster was being squeezed out of it, accompanied by a lot of foul pus and blood.
It had no face, no skin, no muscles or internal organs. It looked like a black and red alien skeleton.
However, it had over a dozen tentacles growing from its head, flailing wildly. Its bone-thin arms had five joints, bending unnaturally like an insect’s.
The moment I saw the monster, I was stunned, my mind went blank, and I watched as the monster’s tentacles wrapped around me. It slowly approached me, seeming to want to hold me, its faceless head almost touching mine.
The music beside me grew louder and more chaotic, finally accompanied by a few infant cries. The blood moon exploded with a boom, and a vast amount of knowledge flooded my brain, filling my mind. This feeling was so familiar, like the feeling of looking directly at a god.
Could this twisted, bizarre monster be a god? Was this the Moon God they spoke of? Ugh, I can’t take it anymore, my head is splitting, about to explode!
“Aaaahhhh!!!” I let out a deafening scream, and the scene before me instantly shattered, returning me to the temple where I was lying.
The stone platform beneath me was shattered, all the braziers around had fallen, and the magic circle on the ground was broken. Some Shaggai Wormfolk were kneeling on the ground nearby.
“Ah! Ughhhh!” I cried out in pain, feeling a searing pain all over my body as if insects were drilling and biting inside me, a pain that felt like my bones were scraping and my heart was being gouged out.
“Quick! Get the dream card back!” the Queen of the Insects commanded, and the surrounding Shaggai Wormfolk swarmed forward, reaching out for me.
“Wait! Stop! She hasn’t fully woken up from the nightmare!” Amelia shouted, but the Shaggai Wormfolk only listened to the Queen of the Insects; no one listened to her.
“Aaargh!” I could only let out hoarse cries, the chaotic music still repeating in my mind.
Just as one Shaggai Wormfolk was about to grab me with its four insectoid hands, a blood vessel suddenly burst from my body and lightly swiped.
The Shaggai Wormfolk’s excited expression froze on its face. It looked down and saw that its insectoid abdomen had been cut open, even split in two, with large amounts of disgusting internal organs and green insect blood spilling all over the ground.
It let out a sharp insectoid cry and fell beside the stone platform, its eight insectoid legs still twitching and grasping, like a cockroach sprayed with insecticide.
Faced with the gruesome death of their comrade, the other Shaggai Wormfolk were terrified and paused. But then the Queen of the Insects commanded again, “Continue! Go and get the dream card back! There will be great rewards for whoever gets it!”
The Shaggai Wormfolk, with almost no hesitation, rushed towards me again. I really wanted to stop, but my body and even my will were no longer under my control.
“Ah!” After a scream, my body was pierced by countless blood vessels, which writhed like golden snakes around me, splattering blood.
The Shaggai Wormfolk’s sturdy chitinous exoskeletons and dense insectoid muscles were all dismembered by a light touch from my blood vessels.
“Hey! Are you crazy?! She’s not distinguishing friend from foe right now! Do you want to die?!” Amelia shouted. However, Jayad rushed towards me without hesitation.
