Chapter 596 Appreciating Talent
As these words were spoken, all the soldiers present looked at Jayad with immense envy, some even showing jealousy and hostility.
Becoming a knight, receiving a fief, ascending to nobility – this was the lifelong dream of countless people, a complete reversal from being beneath others to being above them, requiring only a title.
And a knight’s attendant was the beginning of it all, essentially having one foot in the door of the nobility. Serving a formal noble for a period of time would lead to becoming a true knight in the future.
However, this opportunity was incredibly rare. Many soldiers toiled their entire lives without ever becoming a knight’s attendant, at best becoming cavalrymen, or elite cannon fodder.
The positions for knight’s attendants were limited, reserved for the children of nobles. Unless truly impressed by someone’s potential, or if there were special connections, or perhaps if wealthy individuals paid a knight a hefty sum to have their children made knights, ordinary people not of noble birth had very little chance of becoming a knight’s attendant.
Yet, here was Jayad, solely based on his performance in a battle against magical beasts, being favored by a Knight and wished to take him as an attendant. How fortunate was this, how could they not be jealous?
Of course, some of the militia who had witnessed Jayad’s battle with the magical beasts earlier had no doubt why the knight was interested in him.
This was because the young man’s combat power was like that of a god of war. He alone had faced the attacks of several magical beasts head-on and personally slain a Razor Wolf.
Although the magical beasts were attacked by everyone simultaneously, those who participated in the melee knew better: it was actually this young man who bore the brunt of the magical beasts’ assaults and inflicted damage. The other militia members, armed with pitchforks and rakes, were utterly ineffective against the beasts’ tough hides.
Several times, the magical beasts’ lunges were intercepted and blocked by Jayad. Without him, there would undoubtedly have been greater losses. The knight had seen his skills and thus wished to take him as a knight’s attendant.
“Master, do you truly wish to take him as your attendant?” a knight riding a swift dragon asked from the side, while another female knight smiled, “Perhaps we’ll have a new little brother.”
They were not true knights but attendants of that Tyrannosaurus Knight. In this world, knight’s attendants were quasi-knights who charged into battle and assisted with combat alongside the knights.
Those who were wiping the blood from the Tyrannosaurus, tallying the battle achievements for the knights and attendants, and maintaining armor and weapons were servants, not attendants. These tasks did not require attendants.
“Indeed, I believe he has great potential, possibly more than you,” the Tyrannosaurus Knight added, not forgetting to tease his own attendants.
But he genuinely felt the boy had a boundless future, which was why he had the thought of taking him as an attendant. This was because such strength meant he could be trusted to be by his side and charge into battle together.
However, Jayad’s words stunned everyone present. He spoke humbly, “I apologize, Master. I am currently working under Safah and it would be inconvenient for me to become your knight’s attendant. I thank you for your favor.”
His reply was neither subservient nor arrogant, his attitude was humble and polite, but the refusal was very clear. This made everyone feel he had gone mad, throwing away such a golden opportunity to become a noble.
Many soldiers present wished they could immediately take Jayad’s place and swallow back his foolish statement.
I, however, was contemplating, “Who is Safah? I don’t recall hearing that name before.” After some thought, “He must be Jayad’s boss, who is very wealthy and likely a prominent figure in the underground world.”
Indeed, the Tyrannosaurus Knight knew the name. “So, you’re one of Safah’s people. In that case, I cannot forcefully take you.”
As a knight, he was naturally a proud noble. Extending an invitation once was already showing special attention. If the other party refused, he wouldn’t persuade them further. There were plenty of talented individuals who wished to be his attendant; at most, he saw Jayad’s youth and greater potential.
However, he didn’t know this was merely the tip of the iceberg of Jayad’s abilities. Older Brother Jayad, not wanting to expose his identity as a Holy Knight in front of others, deliberately refrained from using his Holy Light power.
He even thought Jayad was a high-ranking official or confidant of Safah, unaware that Jayad was merely a bodyguard for one of his small taverns. Even Safah himself did not know Older Brother Jayad’s true strength.
Seeing his invitation unsuccessful, the knight did not trouble us further. Instead, he rode his Tyrannosaurus to survey the damage within the territory. Every step of the five-meter-tall giant beast made the ground around it tremble. Both the militia and the City Defense Army watched the enormous dinosaur with awe.
I, too, looked at the magnificent and imposing dinosaur with great curiosity. I had only seen it from afar when the Royal Zoo’s motorcade passed by before. It was nowhere near as majestic and terrifying as it was up close.
Its powerful body and thick legs, the smooth, balanced arc from its constantly swinging tail to its ferocious head, its entire form rippling with muscle, exuded a sense of powerful beauty.
Especially its gaping maw, filled with sharp teeth. The torn wounds on the magical beasts on the ground were likely caused by the Tyrannosaurus. Coupled with its custom-made dragon armor, deliberately added claws and spikes, it looked like a war machine, far more lethal feeling than a wild beast.
To reiterate, could that boy refuse a living dinosaur? This magical beast raid allowed me to witness the combat power of Cando City’s knights, and it was also my first time seeing the famous Pterosaur Knights in actual combat, and even a Dragon Knight.
Unfortunately, we returned too late, and only the last flying magical beast remained. If we had arrived earlier, we should have witnessed the spectacular sight of the Pterosaur Knights fighting in formation. As it was, I only saw the mop-up operation.
Thanks to the Tyrannosaurus Knight’s affirmation, Jayad and I were not subjected to any trouble or questioning. After dropping off the Black Wolf Bird’s corpse, we entered the city.
On the road, Older Brother Jayad recounted last night’s events to me. “My situation wasn’t as exciting as Parul’s. I just went to help the boss deal with a few disobedient gangs. But they had the support of some Orcs from the underground world and attacked us unexpectedly, catching us off guard. We suffered heavy casualties.”
“Are you alright, Older Brother Jayad?” I believed a group of Orcs couldn’t possibly threaten him, and besides, he was standing right in front of me, so of course he was fine.
“Hmm, the boss already knew they dared to cause trouble and were confident. He had a group of gunmen hidden, and the Orcs were mowed down by gunfire as soon as they appeared. However, they were quite resilient, and someone in that gang even threw bombs. If it weren’t for Xiao Wei helping me from the shadows, it would have been quite troublesome,” Jayad said.
“Oh, right. The boss saw my performance last night and rewarded me with a few gold coins. He also said I don’t need to work as a security guard anymore; he has more important work for me.”
